The People's Hero Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 Any of you guys in to your gin? I've done a few tastings and all that sort of stuff, which is a bit naff in all honesty, but I do enjoy trying different gins (with tonic) and indeed variations on that theme, ie g&t, tom collins, gin cocktails, g&t but varying the fruit... I recommend Sipsmiths gin to those who do enjoy their gin and haven't tried it. I'm currently finishing off a bottle of this: Plymouth Navy Strength - it's nice. I've enjoyed it, but I won't be rushing out for more. Its got a strong, sharp gin taste, but not a huge amount of real flavour beyond that (no complexity I suppose). Strong though! I realise I sound like a dick there and I could not care less. Here's one for the summer months and those who don't mind a bit of a girly drink - I'm thinking here by the way men who are strong in their own masculinity in their own way and if some small-winded Bud drinker calls you 'gay' you can treat it with the contempt it deserves without worrying what anyone thinks. Anyone - gin with rose lemonade (waitrose sell it in glass bottles) with ice a slice of lime and mint.
Jon the Hat Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 I like a nice G&T, usually drink Gordon's or Tanquaray. Prefer them a bit simpler I suppose.

You can't beat G & T, especially after a hard week at the office, settling down to one once the boy is in bed on a Friday night is smashing. Its nice tonight as well as we've achieved quite a lot today and so I feel like I've earnt it. Have you tried putting other stuff in instead of just lemon/lime like for example angustura bitters, mint, sprig of rosemary (remove before drinking), cucumber etc? Thanks for the advice on the S-Max btw JtH, loving it so far.
Webbo Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 I used to drink Gin and Slim line tonic when I was on the Atkins diet. It's a nice drink but I did feel a little effeminate drinking it. I drink manly pints of bitter now.
Hollism Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 I noticed how you started two topics within a few minutes. The first being 'We need', the second being 'Gin'

It's a nice drink but I did feel a little effeminate drinking it. I drink manly pints of bitter now. This is one other reason I'm drinking more gin. I find it costs me a fortune to drink it when I go out though. I do drink a fair amount, which is probably part of why I've got so fat, but the calories in 9 or 10 pints of ale is ridiculous.
FoxyPV Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 Gin is awful but there is a cocktail called a Tiger Lily which is amazing. Gin and beer at the same time definitely do not mix. This has been proven by myself so no one else has to try it.

Many people say that to me when I switch from lager (on the occasions I drink it - usually summer) to gin. Lager is too gassy after a while. I've never felt particularly bad afterwards.
cambridgefox Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 Hendricks is nice.Expensive but nice once in a blue moon.
The People's Hero Posted 23 February 2013 Author Posted 23 February 2013 Hendricks is nice.Expensive but nice once in a blue moon. Is it though? I'm not arguing, but I wonder with some of these products, how much of it is image and presentation? At my most local pub which I'd actually consider drinking in, an order of gin and tonic prompts the question which gin from a list of 5. 4 of those come with standard 2 ice cubes, baby bottle of tonic and a dried out slice of lemon. Hendricks brings out a fantastic heavy glass with green detailing, carefully arranged whole ice cubes with freshly cut cucumber and a different bottle of tonic water!!!! It is lovely, but do I think that because its £8?
AoWW Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 Is Hendricks the one that tastes of cucumber? If so, I'm not a fan. To be honest, I'm not a big fan of gin in general, although I don't mind it in cocktails and if it's an occasion where a G&T seems the appropriate option then I prefer Bombay Sapphire over other brands. I do love sloe gin, though, and I was once given a rather nice bottle of clementine gin, although I realise the purists will be curling their lips up in disdain!

Sloe gin is lovely - and very very useful as an ingredient in some delicious, warming, winter cocktails (TPH tip - add it to your mulled wine). Bombay Sapphire is the MiL's favoured tipple. Its nice. I'm not sure if Hendricks tastes of cucumber or if its just typically served with cucumber, I've only had it served that way.

The first time I had Hendricks was around a mates who said if I wanted a G & T,without me knowing what It was I said it was nice and asked what it was,I was none the wiser when he told me.Apart from the expensive looking bottle I would never have known. Oh Aldi mince pies are fooking nice and I insist on them at Xmas. Is Hendricks the one that tastes of cucumber? If so, I'm not a fan. Can do it.
The People's Hero Posted 23 February 2013 Author Posted 23 February 2013 just had a look at a few gins online and its not actually that expensive,I've now realised. I always assumed it was expensive, but you're right. It must just be expensive in my local. A pint of peroni is £4.90 though. Seriously.
cambridgefox Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 Huh? Really bad having to explain an already shit joke, but I'm sure most of your village say coocumber!
The Doctor Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 Don't mind a G&T, and it makes a decent basis for cocktails. When it comes to spirits though I'm firmly in the whisky camp. No drink can hold a candle to a good single malt.
AoWW Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 Really bad having to explain an already shit joke, but I'm sure most of your village say coocumber! Ah, I see. I'm damn sure they don't, though, it's very posh around here!
The People's Hero Posted 23 February 2013 Author Posted 23 February 2013 I wish I liked whiskey/whisky - and I'm not someone who ever wishes to like anything. I like what I like. That is the one exception though. There is such a character to it and such a rich history or varied assortment of curious and interesting distilleries and single malts to try. Monk (from here) will understand this - I suspect he wishes I appreciated them more too!
FoxesAreBlue Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 Once upon a time I was a few hours into a works do (in my old job) with an open tab when the gaffer called me to the bar, upon which, neatly lined up, were 6 glasses of Gin. Three for each of us, and I was instructed that it was a race to the finish. Fully aware of the impending trainwreck I politely declined, however when my sanity and manhood were called into question - in front of my entire sales team - my competitive nature didn't let me back down. Long story short. I won the race to the bottom of the final glass (WINNER!!) however not QUITE to the toilet to laugh it all up again. Yes, I made it to the cubicle and yes, it went in the general direction of the porcelain. But my accuracy wasnt quite there, and to this day I feel for the poor sod who had to clean the walls, floor and toilet after me. Unfortunately now the simple smell of Gin makes me wretch.
Langston Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 Monkey 47 is an unbelievably lovely gin, made with cranberries. Lighthouse gin from New Zealand is awesome, too.
The People's Hero Posted 23 February 2013 Author Posted 23 February 2013 Reminds me of this Christmas when (quite drunk) I was asked to sort some drinks, which I did before taking a full gulp of mine and thinking 'thats quite strong'... I'd finished mine 'and was feeling a little poorly' before it was pointed out I'd not put any mixer at all in most of the drinks. Ooops. I'd drank a glass of gin. I've just now been and tried a bit of gin on its own. Bloody horrible even a bit half cut!
z-layrex Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 Got stupid pissed on G&T a couple of years ago and now I can't touch the stuff.
