The People's Hero Posted 23 February 2013 Author Posted 23 February 2013 It holds a special sort of place for me as well because the first time I drank it I was out with my best mate who revealed to me at about 10.30pm that they were expecting their first child. That was a cracking night when it finally ended, much, much later .
The Doctor Posted 23 February 2013 Posted 23 February 2013 Gin is the choice of champions. But true winners drink absolute alcohol.
Carl the Llama Posted 24 February 2013 Posted 24 February 2013 I don't mind the occasional G&T, but it doesn't half make me feel like a tragic, middle-aged housewife. Pick a bloody username and stick with it!
Zingari Posted 24 February 2013 Posted 24 February 2013 I used to drink Gin and Slim line tonic when I was on the Atkins diet. It's a nice drink but I did feel a little effeminate drinking it. I drink manly pints of bitter now. Blimey Webbo! I hadn't realised that you used to be gay. How did you get cured ? Did they send Maria from Corrie to sort you out?
Webbo Posted 24 February 2013 Posted 24 February 2013 Blimey Webbo! I hadn't realised that you used to be gay. How did you get cured ? I tie weights to my privates, sometimes the old ways are the best.
Tielemans63 Posted 24 February 2013 Posted 24 February 2013 TPH have you ever tried Sipsmiths gin? I went to a rather swanky wedding in London a few months back and my wife (whose blood stream is approx 10% G&T) nearly had a happy accident when she saw this stuff behind the bar. I have to say it was absolutely fabulous stuff - very, very nice indeed. Tried to order some from t'internet when we got back but the best price I could get was £45 a bottle - cant really justify spending that on one bottle so we'll make do with Bombay for now.

I mentioned it earlier on. For my money, its about the best out there. There are obviously loads I haven't tried, but this stuff is beautiful. Its delicate, smooth and flavoursome enough to drink neat.

Hmm , I'm not so sure about that one .I think Marcus has the right idea by letting Maria cure him . OK it might be a long and slow process and even exhausting some nights , but if I turn a bit gay, it's my cure of choice . I'd only choose your method if they sent round Hattie Jacques or someone like that
Rincewind Posted 24 February 2013 Posted 24 February 2013 Can't say I'm a big fan of gin although never had great quantities of it. Some tax payers may be pleased to know that atm I splash their £71 PW out on other luxuries like food gas and electric bills. I prefer rum Bacardi, brandy and Southern Comfort when I do have spirits but it's mainly a pint or two of a decent bitter.
Rincewind Posted 24 February 2013 Posted 24 February 2013 Didn't there used to be a saying that gin was 'Mother's ruin' ?
Rincewind Posted 24 February 2013 Posted 24 February 2013 Hey Zing, I just googled mothers ruin and found the picture you just posted. Mother's Ruin In the mid-eighteenth century the effects of gin-drinking on English society makes the use of drugs today seem almost benign! Gin started out as a medicine - it was thought it could be a cure for gout and indigestion, but most attractive of all, it was cheap. In the 1730's notices could be seen all over London. The message was short and to the point 'Drunk for 1 penny, Dead drunk for tuppence, Straw for nothing'!! http://www.historic-uk.com/CultureUK/Mothers-Ruin/ People would do anything to get gin…a cattle drover sold his eleven-year-old daughter to a trader for a gallon of gin, and a coachman pawned his wife for a quart bottle.
Zingari Posted 24 February 2013 Posted 24 February 2013 Yes , very interesting . Society has always had it's problems , nothing is new I once heard that the Dutch tried to flood England with cheap gin to weaken the population during one of the many wars between us. .
Guest Posted 24 February 2013 Posted 24 February 2013 My wife likes gin. I think it's like aftershave.
Rocket-Ron Posted 24 February 2013 Posted 24 February 2013 it's a famous painting by Hogarth They should make a gin called Hogarth
Zingari Posted 24 February 2013 Posted 24 February 2013 They should make a gin called Hogarth Hogarth's Gin would be a great name . There used to be a soft porn girly mag called "Whitehouse" . Presumably in honour of Mary Whitehouse . Not that I ever read it though
FoxesAreBlue Posted 24 February 2013 Posted 24 February 2013 In the spirit of this thread (geddit!!) I nearly tried one earlier on a family do but I just couldn't bring myself to. Maybe I'm too immature.
Saxondale Posted 25 February 2013 Posted 25 February 2013 My friend an I once had a brief fascination with NLP and decided to do an amateur NLP experiment on another friend by coercing him into ordering a gin (which he never drinks) at the bar by means of subtle, incessant references. It actually worked, except that he subsequently realised what we were up to. Admittedly, this post belongs more in the (as yet) non-existent NLP thread.

Pah, just buy them one and tell them it's vodka. Once they drink it they'll know the difference, but it'll be too late. That might be why the ale society I run is down to just me and one other person - attempting to torture the lesser members.
