Webbo Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 I would hope that their employment was based on more than just their ability to time waste effectively. No one wants to be everybody's favourite relegated team. I don't like negative tactics but sometimes it's necessary. I wouldn't complain about the type of football we played if we were top of the league.
James. Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 No one wants to be everybody's favourite relegated team. I don't like negative tactics but sometimes it's necessary. I wouldn't complain about the type of football we played if we were top of the league. This is where I specifically differentiated between negative tactics and timewasting. I have a lot more flexibility when it comes to our approach to football. I'd like us to play attacking positive football every week but understand that in reality that's not always possible or desirable. It's the horrible, cheating, time wasting shit that massively winds me up and I would hate to see us indulge in it.
Webbo Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 I spoke to a West Ham fan on holiday and I asked him what he thought of Big Sam's tactics, he said he loved him. He was fed up of playing nice football and losing.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 Its a shame that we didnt still have Wellens on the pitch he'd have kept the ball won cheap fouls and might have helped us more. We should keep the ball in the corners more and we should have won
Kitchandro Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 I spoke to a West Ham fan on holiday and I asked him what he thought of Big Sam's tactics, he said he loved him. He was fed up of playing nice football and losing. We'll see how long that lasts though. Stoke fans were saying that once, now they're fed up of it. There's only so long fans can enjoy seeing their team just grind out enough results to keep themselves midtable. Football fans all enjoy the 'beautiful game' at heart and if you can't see your team impress you with nice football sometimes then there really isn't much point. And even if you're not a greatly talented side, you can still try to score goals and attack teams in your own way, even if that lumping it long for flick ons and getting men in the box.
Captain... Posted 14 March 2013 Author Posted 14 March 2013 Exactly - and the reason why I can't vote in this poll. There are different ways of "using up time" - and we have the players to be quite good at keeping possession without indulging in Leeds-style cheating by feigning injuries, petty arguing, refusing to accept the ball from an opponent at a throw-in, repeatedly moving the ball at goal-kicks and so on (to name just a few of the Warnock tactics deployed at the recent match). Your poll needs more options: "Yes" to keeping possession, to passing it around at the back, to holding it in the corner... (and to not playing pointless crosses or getting caught offside, sins Vardy & Waghorn were apparently guilty of at Cardiff); but "No" to Warnock-style illegitimate time-wasting and cheating. I don't class keeping possession and knocking it around as negative, but I do class running it into the corner and then just standing over it and waiting for the foul to be so. I do class taking short corners and making no effort to attack as negative as well. Whilst these things are within the laws of the game they piss me off. If you support that then, in my opinion, you support negative tactics, albeit legal negativity.
Thracian Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 Just keep pressing the game and giving the opposition as little time as possible. If they're losing they'll leave gaps at the back anyway. it's almost as negaive to sit back and invite pressure as it is to run the ball into corners and, while we've got away with it sometimes, we've so nearly thrown games away with penalties having to be saved, dramatic misses or gret saves/blocks by Kasper and Co. Even against Cardiff, notwithstanding Vardy's not preventing the cross we knew they had a big striker and the way to deal with that kind of threat is to have a high line, double bank and win the second ball, and make sure you have someone quick as the double banker so they can recover if the big striker somehow gets behind the defence. You also deal with any cross potential at source and be careful not to allow the striker close to goal. Everything should be about 've mentioned is about pressing the play not wasting time. We actually got relegated to Division One through pissing about running the ball into the corner. Instead of a comfortable win, the opposition (Charlton i think) won possession and equalised, costing us two points - and that was enough of a margin to send us down as it panned out.
Carl the Llama Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 At the end of the day, I'd rather an honourable point instead of 3 shameful ones: Thought Bayern were embarrassing in the way they finished the match, even if you think in-the-corner tactics are ok, you surely don't expect players of such quality feeling the need to employ them. I also think there should be a way to penalise players who roll around until the ball's kicked out of play, before immediately jumping to their feet full of energy. Mandzukic(sp?) was a particularly appalling example of this in the Bayern-Arsenal match.
AKCJ Posted 14 March 2013 Posted 14 March 2013 Its like having Robbie Savage in midfield. You hate everyone else for it but wish you had someone like him.
AyewJoking Posted 15 March 2013 Posted 15 March 2013 Theres a time and a place for everything. If you are at least 2-0 up then you've earned the right to waste time and hold out for the win.
_Fatboyslow_ Posted 15 March 2013 Posted 15 March 2013 Its like having Robbie Savage in midfield. You hate everyone else for it but wish you had someone like him. Never did and never will. Oddly enough SNN have done a report on Stoke which makes it look like the fans will put up with a negative approach while winning games but now they are on a ten match losing run ( may be winless ) the fans are far from happy with it. With regard to our club don't we have a histroy of playing a bit of football? and don't we love a trier ?
