Toffee_Fox Posted 20 March 2013 Posted 20 March 2013 Nine years ago today Bernard Murphy was killed just outside the Walkers Stadium in Leicester on his way to watch his beloved toffees, Bernard was just 40 at the time. This morning Leicester City rang his family to tell them they were in their thoughts and prayers, as well as sending flowers, a fantastic gesture they do every year why his own club seem to have forgotten about the loss of one of their supporters. I see a few of your supporters moaning on twitter and such about how the club is ran, so I thought I would like to post about a positive and thank your club for such a fantastic gesture which is a big comfort for his family, as they said today "Everton should hand over their peoples club tag to Leicester City"
Soar Fox Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 How did he die? Fantastic from lcfc If I remember correctly he died from flying debris.
cc_star Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 I'm shocked that this sort of gesture has lasted & also survived owner changes.
deejdeej Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 Thats nice to hear, cheers for a positive thread. I remember going to that game i was only about 13, and remember it being really windy and stuff flying about from the industrial bit where freemans meadow is now, I think it was a bit of wood got carried by the wind and hit him if my memory serves me correctly.
Bettsj2 Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 I remember walking past him on the way to the ground. Looked awful. When they announced it on the tannoy it was a truly awful moment.

Soar Fox Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 Like CC-star said I'm shocked it's lasted this long especially with new owners also. But still a very nice gesture by our club. I was15/16 at the time and can remember the game, quite a few Everton fans in the home end. Also the Duncan Ferguson/Stefan Freund incident which was quite funny to watch.
cjslcfc Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 Makes me very proud to be a Leicester fan. I was very young when this happened but remember being at the game that day. Was shocked when I heard the news.
Bert Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 If I remember correctly he died from flying debris. Correct mate. Was a terribly windy day. Duncan Ferguson was halfway to completing a choke slam on Freund, we hammered them. Drew 1-1 thanks to a last minute Bent equaliser.
broughtonblue Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 If I remember correctly he died from flying debris. Thats right, i remember now
Swiss_tony Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 i believe a bentley's roof member restained the bench as well to make it look good as new again. give them a hand too.

Bert Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 Bent had one ruled out for nothing too. Such a frustrating season. Yep. 0-0 at the time as well mate.

Dan Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 Remember that game as well. Really has put a smile on my face to see they do that, very top gesture and glad it's appreciated.
philce Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 Wasn't there a plaque attached to the old bridge? What happened to it when it was demolished the other year?
Bert Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 Wasn't there a plaque attached to the old bridge? What happened to it when it was demolished the other year? It's being looked after by the club.
Mike the Metal Ed Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 It's being looked after by the club. Isn't it in the memorial garden now? I thought it had been put there.

This has put me in a genuinely good mood.
Bilo Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 http://www.vintagebluekipper.com/obituaries/bernard_murphy.htm I read this on the Bentley's Roof Facebook page and it seems as though a few of their posters were involved in memorials. It's really heartwarming to read about these reactions; for all we talk about our large collection of tithead fans, we really do have some lovely people in our fanbase as well. Fair play to the club as well, I'm sure Yifter's family were more than grateful. Let's hope we can meet Everton next season in the Premier League and the Evertonians can see his memorial again.
Craig Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 One of the worst moments I've experienced at a football match. From the joy of a last minute equaliser to an announcement that someone had died on their way to support their team. This within the space of under five minutes. Terrific gesture from the club.
Bilo Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 It is indeed a wonderful gesture. It does just go to show that in spite of all that is wrong in the modern game, there is still some humanity left and care for fans. To hear that this humanity is exemplified by the behaviour of my own club is something that makes me feel very proud. Well done LCFC.
TrentFox Posted 21 March 2013 Posted 21 March 2013 Top marks to the club for marking that occasion appropriately. Most impressed that they take the time to actually ring rather than write. Good work.
