NorthernFox Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 Right you buggers, with every country of the UK enjoying benefits that we don't and the Scots crying for independance isn't it about time we cut them loose and stood ALONE? Englands freedom starts here :-)
Deucalion Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 No. I would prefer to have Scotland's government than be saddled with southern Tories for ever.
leicsmac Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 In this modern age, secessionism of any kind is not a good idea.
MPH Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 Its very intresting that the government will quite rightly say the falkland islanders have a right to decide their own future.. that its upto them.... and indeed they had a vote and out of the thousands of votes that were cast , only three votes were against remaining British. So.... why dont we just let the Welsh and the Scottish vote? Its probably a case of what happens if one of them gets a chin on? they are probably considered little close for us to fall out with them.....
21st Century Fox Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 Every country should have Indie Pen Dance. Listen to some Death Cab, a bit of Belle & Sebastian, write some stuff down and then have a hoedown. Lovely.
Guest Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 In this modern age, secessionism of any kind is not a good idea. Montenegro, the czech republic and many other country's citizens don't agree Its very intresting that the government will quite rightly say the falkland islanders have a right to decide their own future.. that its upto them.... and indeed they had a vote and out of the thousands of votes that were cast , only three votes were against remaining British. Or the Thrummy bunch?

They've already had a vote on having they're own parliament and Scotland are having a vote on independence in 2015.
Finnegan Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 We only just agreed to have an assembly by a fractional majority. The Welsh typically like the romanticism of being independent but aren't naive enough to think we could do it financially. The Tories would have to really come down hard on Wales, a la Thatcher, to stir up that much nationalist sentiment that we'd vote for separation. Same for Scots. Be staggered if they vote for independence really. Pre-Celtic Tiger collapse MAYBE but definitely not now. Ps: I'm no Welsh nationalist but the idea of England wanting "freedom" from the union is frankly insulting!!
The Doctor Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 Right, so England, the country that started the union by invading Wales, should consider independence?
MooseBreath Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 More or less everywhere in the UK except London and maybe Aberdeen would be economically 3rd world on its own. The north of England and Wales especially. London is the only thing stopping Wales from being a totally 3rd world country.
MPH Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 Montenegro, the czech republic and many other country's citizens don't agree Why not allow Leicestershire people to vote too. Or the Thrummy bunch? because leicestershire has never been an independant nation.

Why would you want to alienate one of your Counties is beyond me..
pSinatra Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 So Scotland, with it's Robert the Bruce, Bannockburn, William Wallace & all that other shit they like to remind the English of.........happy to remain part of the Union for money?
leicsmac Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 Montenegro, the czech republic and many other country's citizens don't agree Why not allow Leicestershire people to vote too. Or the Thrummy bunch? That was before the current crisis though. In any case I think the idea of the nation-state is pretty close to running its course anyway, from an economic standpoint. Global problems require global solutions.
Zingari Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 Surely now we are all part of the union of European states, any semblance of independence is little more than a grand illusion anyway .
Deucalion Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 Surely now we are all part of the union of European states, any semblance of independence is little more than a grand illusion anyway . The European Union allows smaller nations to consider independence while being part of a greater whole. There is no reason why Wales couldn't become independent if it applied to join the EU. I would personally choose to be ruled from either Edinburgh or Brussels rather than London.

Choosing to be "ruled" by Brussels (via either London or Edinburgh) doesn't sound very much like independence to me. It's double speak .

I'm guessing he is one of the angry ones who is having to look for work after the tories have taken some of his hand outs away Poor old sod
Deucalion Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 Choosing to be "ruled" by Brussels (via either London or Edinburgh) doesn't sound very much like independence to me. It's double speak . No, it's a misunderstanding about the EU. In exchange for a huge, barrier free market, member states are expected to work towards standardising such things as worker's rights, environmental policy, legal rights and such like. This creates an even playing field for all economies within the free market and even, in my humble opinion, makes the world a better place. Anything which just effects any particular state is left to that state to legislate.

Deucalion Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 I'm guessing he is one of the angry ones who is having to look for work after the tories have taken some of his hand outs away Poor old sod So if this was true, and I had taken a huge hit in some way to my personal circumstances, you are quite comfortable making fun of this fact on an internet forum? This comment is truly shameful. If there was ever reason to dislike Tories, then you have provided it. Well done you. Ps - I'm doing ok thanks...maybe better than you, who knows?
Deucalion Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 Just like Cyprus can ? Well...Cyprus has been bailed out by the EU. There might be conditions attached to the huge amount of money poured in, but are these conditions worse than the bail out not being available?

If you were previously living on undeserved hand outs and were now getting pissy because you had to find a job then yes, I would find it quite amusing.
Deucalion Posted 30 March 2013 Posted 30 March 2013 If you were previously living on undeserved hand outs and were now getting pissy because you had to find a job then yes, I would find it quite amusing. Well, I'm currently on the streets. I can only go on the internet because I beg outside a Starbucks which has a wifi hotspot. I barely make enough to feed my dog. Does this make you happy?

How is this any different from Wales constantly being bailed out by England and losing some autonomy ? I don't get it . It's just swapping one big ruler for a bigger one
