It was never really 'acceptable' in the first place - more that the authorities wouldn't do anything about it. But in any case not any more - there's been a big public outcry in the last decade about it, and so the authorities have acted accordingly. Lot of sexual harassment charges initially resulted, and blokes have got the message. Still happens once in a while though.

Veering massively off-topic here, but I think we have a conservative attitude to sex over here too, with a similar (but not as weirdly extreme) result. Riding crops anyone? I'm going to assume there's a reason why 50 Shades was/is so popular... Back on topic - Churchill is an obvious choice, superb superb orator and leader. Also Terry Pratchett, for providing so much entertaining work and maintaining such dignity in the face of what's to come for him.

There is a lot of perversion beyond the mask of Japanese sexual conservatism. I'm sure you know that so I'm not sure why you're denying it. Well, no, we're more openly promiscuous yet make a big deal out of porn and get paranoid that it's going to offend or corrupt. They're a lot more conservative (for the most part, I can't deny the existence of love hotels, haha) than we are - certainly publicly - yet openly explore their urges in print media. It really is a niche that's both frowned upon and is considerably less predominant than is made out by stereotype here, though. And the magazines you refer to aren't porn, either. They're sort of weird, nerdy lads mags wit stuffed with black and white manga strips about super heroes and the usual shit with articles on games or gadgets or whatever thrown in. There just happens to be pretty teenage-looking (fully or scantly clad, not naked) girl on the front to draw attention. They do sell porn mags which are a bit weirder than ours (mostly because loads of it is cartoon) but their magazine shelves aren't as sordid as, again, stereotype depicts.

His ideas have probably brought me about 50% of my life's happiness over the years. He was certainly an inspiring figure and his vision and philosophies are definitely admirable. I even look at his original idea for Epcot - it never quite worked out, partly because he died before the plans were finalised, but I've always found it to be fascinating, the concept alone is truly amazing. Then of course there's always Scorsese, De Niro, Pacino, MON, Heskey, Izzet, Banks, Guppy, and Barry Davies. Beat me to it! Favourite footballer ever. Actually cried when O'Neill signed him for Celtic, but I was 6 Also, the more obvious David Beckham. Growing up in the late 90s, early 00s he was the man.
lavrentis Posted 5 June 2013 Posted 5 June 2013 Japan definitely has problems in that area. They had to in fact introduce women only carriages so men would stop touching up school girls and women. This is a country where the national age of consent is 13.
