BoneDog Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 What is the protocol on 4th July? Is it like St Paddy's Day where everyone gets drunk and has a bit of a party?
MooseBreath Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 What is the protocol on 4th July? Is it like St Paddy's Day where everyone gets drunk and has a bit of a party? Leaked NSA data confirms most Americans celebrate their freedom with roast Turkey.

Jordan Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Leaked NSA data confirms most Americans celebrate their freedom with roast Turkey. If that's what you've found out, then I really don't know why this Snowden thing has become such a big deal.
Guest MattP Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Celebrate your freedom. I bet Barack will celebrate with a good ol' spying session.
leicsmac Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Celebrate your freedom. I bet Barack will celebrate with a good ol' spying session. To be fair if McCain were in the Oval Office right now he'd be doing exactly the same thing. He'd just justify it differently.
Leicesterpool Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 I wish us English celebrated St Georges Day like the yanks celebrated Independence Day. It just isn't mentioned much, time for a bank holiday if they can have a bank holiday for the royal wedding then surely they can have one for st georges day. Anyway happy 4th July, I wouldn't mind celebrating thanksgiving
Dan Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Lets all have a drink for this and do fvck all when St Georges Day arrives as per.
leicsmac Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Lets all have a drink for this and do fvck all when St Georges Day arrives as per. Make it a bank holiday. Switch out one of the existing ones if necessary. That'd get people interested. If TPTB really want a national day, make it like the other ones around the world.

Last thing I'd want is it getting like Paddy days wiyj idiots swarming around knowing nothing about their culture or history just getting twatted.

Fair enough, I've got no real horse in this race anyway. There's no real date when the UK really came into being (or the separate nations that make it up) and it's not like we declared independence from anyone. And SGD is more a religious thing (saints day) than a national one. At the same time, I'm all for having another day off and another excuse to get hammered.
Rincewind Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Should us Brits be rejoicing on this day? It's when the Yanks gave us a good hiding and sent us fleeing. and they've been telling us what to do ever since.

Agreed, why does everyone have to go out wave the flag and shout how great we are?, we have a little more decorum and thats a good thing in my book, why not just celebrate the day how you wish? why should it matter what others are doing?
Leicesterpool Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Should us Brits be rejoicing on this day? It's when the Yanks gave us a good hiding and sent us fleeing. and they've been telling us what to do ever since. We still burnt there capital! That's not mentioned much!

I was in Vegas in 09 on this day and the celebrations were quite mental, I decided to amuse myself by asking Americans what the all the fuss was about and then after getting an explanation I;d stand there opened jawed and pretend I thought we still owned them. Got some interesting reactions.
Leicesterpool Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Another big problem is to many brits or english are more bothered about St Patricks day than there own St Georges Day.
Rincewind Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 Not so much bothered but the partying is better. We are too sombre about bank holidays.

Thats the thing though it really didn't happen that way, independance was given only after they voted for a resolution of independence, you would think by talking to most people whether thats a brit or yank that independance day was the same as VE-Day.
Rincewind Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 They do seem to go OTT for their holidays. They have to be different. Look at sacrifice a turkey day. That's really big even for the non-believers.
Jordan Posted 4 July 2013 Posted 4 July 2013 They have to be different. As opposed to every other country in the world, that does everything the same?
