The People's Hero Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Hi all I need to rip/copy a DVD. I only have one drive. DVD RW What is the best free software to do this please? It's an old home video of when we were all kids my mum wants doing, so I'm not infringing any copying before you ask... Would be great if also I could put on some clips from my iPhone. How easy is this?

How easy is this? Are you running a PC/laptop or a Mac? These details are fairly important.
Guest ttfn Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 I thought this was a thread about the rise of Blu-ray.

whoareyaaa Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Download Nero Then just use the DVD copy option.

James. Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Just as another option I have used Convert X to DVD to much success before. http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/
sphericalfox Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Another question. What kind of DVD player do you have? Does it play AVI/mpeg files? If so all you need to do is burn the file to the DVD rather than try and find software. Drag the file on the open DVD folder. It'll appear as a shortcut. On the left handside of the window you should have the option to burn to disc, or something of that nature, it's been awhile since I used Windows to burn a disc. If you don't have a DVD player that will play files, then Nero is an easy drag and drop DVD file burner, but you'll not find a 'free version', that is unless you 'seek to find one'.
leicsmac Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Digital compression and hard drives that you can plug into modern tellies via USB are making DVD's rapidly obsolete. But if you really want to know, then what people have said above about Nero is sound.

But if you really want to know, then what people have said above about Nero is sound. I completely agree. I have a 3tb drive loaded with my movies (no, not those sort of movies), pictures (not those sort of pictures) and kids tv, permanently plugged in to the tv. This is something I'm doing as a favour for my mum who isn't very tech-savvy and for my purposes, an electronic copy is fine, but she and a few others her age want a copy on dvd. (I've only just got her on to dvd, in fact she made the decision herself, but she has paid boots to put this video on to a dvd) Sorry for the long explanation I'm sure no one is interested in. I'll probably never use the software again. To change the question slightly, I have lots of 1 or 2 minute clips of the last 18 months of my kids and my wife wants them on a dvd or similar to send to some of her elderly relatives. Is it easy to create something which would be easy for people to use? Can I 'stitch' these videos together easily - or have say 100 different 'chapters' but have the dvd automatically play from one to the next? Is there an idiot proof software to do this and maybe add captions etc? I have zero patience and not a lot of time to devote to it, but I have promised I'll do it. Thanks in advance.

There is an idiot proof way on a mac (iMovie), but as you don't have one, then Nero should do it for you. Just google Nero torrent and bobs your video making uncle.

That's a good question. DVD burning software is pretty easy to come by but doing the more complicated stuff normally requires software you have to pay for. However from what I can tell you could use Windows DVD Maker to do what you want to do (link the videos up so they play concurrently with no stopping). Hve a look at that, I would suggest.

This Movie maker is your friend.. simple and effective
Ian W LCFC Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Windows Movie Maker should do the job you want, won't take too long either.
Guest seanfox778 Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 I'm not very good with computers but i bought a laptop recently and i'd like to store some of my dvds on it instead of carrying them around with me, Is Nero the best option for me too? I used something called dvdfab and i copied the film Looper onto my harddrive last night but when i played it back to check that it'd worked the quality wasn't great even though it is a genuine dvd, is this normal or should it be the same quality as when i play the dvd from the dvd drive?

There is copyright protection on bought DVDs, dvdfab sounds like a developed software to get around this, thus the reduction in quality in your file. There isn't a legal software to skirt around the protection that I know of. i can be corrected though.

sphericalfox Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Ok cheers mate i'll just have to get one of those dvd wallet things so i can carry more around. there are some dvds/blu-rays that get released where you get access to an online file that you can download, but I don't think that is universal (usually Disney films/ big releases etc.)
BoneDog Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 HONG KONG PHEWEY. I thought that the Dollar singer/songwriter/dancer/comedian David van Day had passed for a minute then!
Rincewind Posted 25 August 2013 Posted 25 August 2013 Found a few of my CD's One was Blue - All Rise. Did I actually buy that album? Also have ZZ Top and Dire Straits so a nice mixture.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 27 August 2013 Posted 27 August 2013 My knowledge of computers is almost non existent. Can only just manage to post on here.
