davieG Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Hence the reason queues are often big in Lidl and Aldi, they dont want to have many staff in the building comapred to turnover. Ive been in store before when there has only been three or four staff members in before. Shocking really. And yes customer service might suffer a little but customers in Lidl and Aldi are not the same as usual supermarkets. They are utter basatrds I regularly use Aldi and Tesco and the queues are not only worse at Tesco, mainly because most of the tills are unmanned but also because Aldi are significantly quicker at the actual till. I've no idea why but their bar code readers are much better than the big supermarkets. I also find their staff much more friendly and at least look at you. The big downside to Aldi is the limited choice of food but for me the compensation of some fantastic bargains in the diy and garden equipment makes up for that.
fuchsntf Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Living in Germany 25yrs. My wife is German..even here there is some stigma with the likes of Aldi and lidle. Monday and Thursdays they bring out the specials...clothes, electrics, lawnmowers...etc There are some bargains, but no top quality. We dont buy fresh meat from either. vegetables, fruits of the season, yes in season choice of local or international.packet delly meats, or cheeses, sometimes. Milk, butter, if we need to top up in the week. Good at christmas for cakes and biscuits (German) and stocking fillers like diarys, pens, manicure sets, and toys. We use Aldi and Lidl for top ups in the week, not for weekly shopping, unless they really do have a qualty meat special Offer or an Italian, French , English weeks, but now on mainland europe, other counties foodstuff are available AT good and reasonable prices....in the better upmarket supermarkets and shopping properly not anymore expensive. Aldi, Lidl, you can save money on the basics, but meats....you get what you pay for.Though that said Aldi has some good Offers on various summer grill meat packets.oh Pizzas both Lidl and Aldi are cheaper on well known brands. Though pizzas are various and cheaper than in England.
Greatness_Since_1884 Posted 11 September 2013 Posted 11 September 2013 Gotta love Aldi. Only place where the shopping is cheaper than the carrier bag
ADK Posted 12 September 2013 Posted 12 September 2013 It's good for many things, fresh vegetables and fruit, frozen/tinned fish, chocolate. It's not a particularly enjoyable experience though, the staff don't look very happy, the aisles are narrow and the stock is poorly arranged. Often the prices aren't clearly labelled. The tills are again cramped while you aren't given enough time to pack up your shopping and they don't accept credit card. You have to pay for bags too. I wouldn't want to do a big shop there but it's good for certain things that are much cheaper.
Rincewind Posted 14 September 2013 Posted 14 September 2013 Went in there today. There is also a B&M and a Pound shop up there. What they don't have is a cashpoint and a pub. Spent nearly £10 in Aldi and not all on groceries. Went in latish so rushing to get back for the game. Had to go to get money then backtrack.

Webbo Posted 14 September 2013 Posted 14 September 2013 my wife swears on their nappies We use to get ours from Dina discount (dodgy dinos) cien brand.half the time you had to fix them with sellotape but they weren't half cheap.
sphericalfox Posted 14 September 2013 Posted 14 September 2013 We use to get ours from Dina discount (dodgy dinos) cien brand.half the time you had to fix them with sellotape but they weren't half cheap. my wife did a weekly shop, including nappies at Aldi (okay she only bought chicken drumsticks as the meat ) for the week, and it came in at £42. You can't argue with that sort of value. The nappies are decnt, don't leak, and don't fall apart. You can tell they are made by a brand name - just cheaper. They keep me dry at night too.
