The People's Hero Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 So yeah. I'm a bit of a snob but I've switched to Aldi and its alright. Most of their staff seem like actual people too, not the idiot drones you get in our local Tesco. Anyway else tried it? The German bits and pieces they do are unsurprisingly excellent.
jonthefox Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 I go a fair bit. It always seems to get a bad press and that's unjustified. Someone said to me its only Germanys version of Asda, so i went . Food was good and you can fill a trolley for £60.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 I've been toying with going for ages, but have an entirely irrational and unjustified fear that it will be a terrible experience that will end with me lashing out at people

It's great generally TPH Although only go there occasionally personally due to various other factors Can definately get the odd bargain etc
jonthefox Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 The only bad thing i could pick on, is they do seem to waste space trying to flog non food items.
Haydos Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Only thing I don't like is that their tills are shit. The cashiers smash everything through the scanner then try and shove you away whilst starting on the next persons shopping. Where the **** am I meant to put all my shit?

In your trolley, I love the fast tills and in spite of that they staff do acknowledge your existence. I've also bought some decent tools for day that I otherwise couldn't afford and they've saved me getting someone in. My only problem is some of the fresh veg come in large quantities for the two of us but is considerably cheaper although I do tend to waste some of it. I tend to try to use all the supermarkets as they all have their plus an minus points but tesco is the worst and certainly not inexpensive, I've even ventured into a Lidl.

You are supposed to just put in straight back in the trolley then go to the back of the tills to bag it up. Schoolboy error!

There's a line davieG, and thats stepping over it.
SystonFox Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 i recently converted to Aldi as i was "curious". last week me and the mrs did a big shop for £51! the same big shop at asda can sometimes cost £100 and we usually buy the same rubbish week in week out. when my mrs proceded to cook a lasagne using Aldi ingredients i was suprised to say its genuinely the best she has ever done it. really tasty. the only thing i dont like is the one i use (Syston) the aisles are way too thin and any more than 3 trolleys down it and it begins to feel like a section of road in Kent.
indierich06 Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 There's definitely a stigma surrounding it - people seem to get very snobbish about it, but at the end of the day they do really good stuff and it ends up being a lot cheaper than shopping in the bigger supermarkets. My old man was a bit skeptical when one of them opened up in Aylestone, but he won't go anywhere else to do his main shopping now. Great value. I live in London now and there isn't one around my house for miles, so I end up having to go to Asda/Sainsburys/Tesco all the time. I'd definitely go to Aldi if there was one nearby though.
The People's Hero Posted 6 September 2013 Author Posted 6 September 2013 Excellent. A joke about a 130 vehicle crash. Bravo.
Fox92 Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 I use it when I'm at uni... Can get a full weeks meal for the same price as a couple of days at one of the major supermarkets. I mean, £1.99 for 6 chicken drumsticks, rice is about £0.90 a bag, bread at £1.00. Can't really argue, especially when I'm on a tighter budget.
The People's Hero Posted 6 September 2013 Author Posted 6 September 2013 I do my main grocery shopping there. We do have to go elsewhere for other bits, but generally it's brilliant.
Finnegan Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Aldi is excellent,if you refuse to go entirely on the grounds its cheaper then I despair!
Jace Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Yeah the whole point regarding the tills is so you can put the items straight back in the trolley and then move away to the space behind to bag them up, when you think about it its not a bad idea because then the process is quicker and you spend less time queueing. Isn't as popular with the British public apparently as many like to take 10 minutes to do what should take 2 minutes and stand around chatting nonsense to the cashier. 1 of my best mates works at Aldi and he likes it the pay isn't too bad either £8/9 an hour
davieG Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Their barcode readers seem far superior to other supermarkets with some places taking two or three attempts to scan, Widow's it's a very quick swipe.
SystonFox Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Excellent. A joke about a 130 vehicle crash. Bravo. i forgot you're a kent lad. apologies
RobHawk Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 In my experience Lidl is just as good as Aldi! both of em are great! If your too stuck up to go into one of them? Don't bother! Stick to Tescos! We don't want your sort in our budget German supermarkets anyway!
Simmo86 Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 I've dabbled with Lidi, never Aldi though. Lidi is excellent, the mrs kept bugging me to use it and I was sceptical to begin with. But have to say even though the products are cheap they taste just as good as Asda, Tesco etc.
MooseBreath Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Peasants. In fairness, I'm happy to buy the likes of bread, milk and eggs from the aldi's and the Ludl's and often do, but whenever I've bought meat there it has been of quite poor quality and in the case of chicken thighs for example, you get so much less meat that it's no longer good value. Plus it just seems to taste of deprivation somehow.
SystonFox Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 it tastes of deprivation. i love that quote. does it smell like poverty too?

Very lucky on that score.
The People's Hero Posted 6 September 2013 Author Posted 6 September 2013 i forgot you're a kent lad. apologies No worries. Pretty major thing down here and I was worried sick people I knew would have been involved. Was relieved to hear no fatalities.
Ric Flair Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Not seen many down the smoke so I have to put up with endless fookin Tesco Metro's or Waitrose. There's only about 4 bastard Asda's in the whole of London as well.
