Captain... Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Here's what I don't get, they often say that places like Aldi can sell the same stuff for cheaper by having almost 0 advertising budget, because it is very often the same product in different packaging, so why am I now seeing more and more Aldi adverts, I can only see prices going up as they decide they want to compete with big boys and lose their USP. Netto was always my budget foreign supermarket of choice as a stoodent. I think they saved money by having no storage out back and all stock was piled up on top of the shelves or underneath, it was a skretty looking place but as the budget became tight, 7p can of beans and 11p loaf of bread got me through the hard times.
Sharpe's Fox Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Some of the brand imitation ideas are amazing. Instead of Penguin bars, Seal bars!
The Year Of The Fox Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Need to start going there. It's the same distance as morrisons from my house. The thing is I can do my weekly shop at morros in 20 mins as I knpw where everuthing is. It'd take me a while to get used to aldis layout.

When they stop wheeling out the merchandise on pallets, then you should start worrying.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Iceland is great value, I find. Some of their stuff is a bit naff, but the majority are fine.
Zingari Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Who remembers Brierley's in Belgrave Gate? Old Frank knew how to run a supermarket !
Haydos Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 You are supposed to just put in straight back in the trolley then go to the back of the tills to bag it up. Schoolboy error! But I want to use bags!
21st Century Fox Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 I've been to Lidl in Germany and they have that very European practice of having to tear through the packing material yourself to get to the products you want. For instance, they just load the industial sized multipacks onto the shelves and if you want one bottle of water you have to find your own way to tear through the half inch thick industrial plastic to get it out of a pack of eight. Do they do that over here? I'm not sure I want to be stood in an aisle gnarrling on a multipack of orange juice. Although I suppose I could just get one of those walking canes that secretly sheaths a hidden sword... but then if I've got the cane I'll have to get the matching cape and top hat... yeah actually I'll probably just do that and start shopping at Lidl.
Jon the Hat Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Waitrose & M&S are on the way home. For big shop i tend to use Sainsburys becuase it is closest. We tend to buy branded becuase my wife grew up in Oz and they dont do a lot of own label over there. Side question, can you name the buggest selling brand in the UK?

I think only a few years ago it was Barclays. But if you mean UK brand only. Otherwise, it'll be something stupid like McDonalds etc.
21st Century Fox Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Side question, can you name the buggest selling brand in the UK? Seriously! I'm the only one who's going with the bug angle here!!? Flymo?
21st Century Fox Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Where's Zingari gone? This is usually his job! Moth-ercare? Ladybird Books?
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 I go to Aldi occasionally but I'd find it hard to do the big shop there regularly, they just don't sell everything so I'd have to go to extra shops or change what I'm going to eat. They also seemed to have inflated their meat prices over the past few months, moreso than other chains Some of the stuff they sell is excellent though. Those little cream chocolate bars and the maple chicken slices - I can't go into Aldi and leave without them
Saxondale Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 I've been toying with going for ages, but have an entirely irrational and unjustified fear that it will be a terrible experience that will end with me lashing out at people Like basically any busy supermarket then?
davieG Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Who remembers Brierley's in Belgrave Gate? Old Frank knew how to run a supermarket ! He should have had a garden centre he was so good at fencing.

They do it by having less choice, taking up less shelf space meaning the shops are smaller ie cheaper. They also use less staff who are expected to do whatever is needed, managers have to clean the toilets if they are the only ones available etc, but they are better paid than staff at Tescos or Asda. The one in Syston is great, we don't use it much because the missus works at Asda and we get 10% discount but I like looking through the tools and electrical items, unbelievably cheap.
Kyle_Le_Don Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Porridge sachets are BEAUT too... Not usually a porridge kinda guy...
Tincy Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Been using Aldi for the past 2 years and its superb, not had any problems at all
Rincewind Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Who remembers Brierley's in Belgrave Gate? Old Frank knew how to run a supermarket ! My brother worked there in his student days. upset Frank Brierley because he wanted to tidy the place up and stack the shelves amd pick things up off the floor. Brierly said something like it was how the customers liked it and why he was so rich. Should really use Aldi more but it seems out the way for me even though it's not too far. Seems easier to go into town to Sainsburys, Iceland etc then have a pint somewhere. There is nowhere near Aldis to go. I even go in Tesco Express then moan about what I pay. Went in poundland yesterday bought two family size soups on the shelf it had underneath Heinz soup 2 for £1 or £1 each so I had two I was charged £2. I said at the checkout I thought they were 2 for £1. He said no that's for the smaller tins. I said someone needs to sort the shelf stacking out its misleading customers. Still decent value though but thought they needed to know doubt anything will be done as they don't pay for their staff to be intelligent.
Solihullfox Posted 6 September 2013 Posted 6 September 2013 Get some of our stuff from Aldi and it is considerably cheaper than the mainstream supermarkets and most of the stuff is fine. I started going there as I was completely fed up with the big chains increasing prices or reducing weights/quantities for the same money as previously charged. I reckon the shopping bill at the mainstreams has gone up by 25% in the last 2 years, robbing bastards. Agree with others that most of the staff I have spoken to are great. My best find is a red wine which was voted best wine in a blind tasting carried out with wine buffs from the newspapers and is only £3.99 called Toro Loco (Tempranillo grape) - wouldn't say it's the greatest but perfectly good for everyday quaffing
The People's Hero Posted 6 September 2013 Author Posted 6 September 2013 I tried that toro loco last weekend not having realised it had won awards and neither the wife or I rated it. Had a 6.99 aldi Malbec last night which was very nice. Quaffable. And quaffed it was.

Will usually get some nice stuff in for the weekend. I like Malbec so will give the Aldi one a try
