Dan Posted 18 December 2013 Posted 18 December 2013 Regenerations all very well but where will the homeless sleep? In the urinals
Strokes Posted 18 December 2013 Posted 18 December 2013 A fair question when you see David Bowley has shacked up in the Northbridge Tavern. He would be classed as homeless in some peoples eyes despite having been parked in one of Woodgates biggest buildings for years. He stood as an independant candidate, I just don't understand why anyone didn't vote for him. Call me picky, but if I was to some degree bisexual, I would still like to think I would have better standards than a street urchin.
Guest MattP Posted 18 December 2013 Posted 18 December 2013 Call me picky, but if I was to some degree bisexual, I would still like to think I would have better standards than a street urchin. Maybe, but they would certainly take a feed and be grateful.

Babylon Posted 19 December 2013 Posted 19 December 2013 They made a complete shambles of Newarke Steet (great idea cheers Peter), thought having loads of foreigners made them a shoe in for the culture rubbish, so I don't hold out much hope for a project this size.
hairy Posted 19 December 2013 Posted 19 December 2013 It's all well and good building this stuff but if no-one wants to live or do business there then it will just turn into a slum eventually. I'd like to see more investment in recreation. I dunno what exactly but something along the lines of the Tamworth snowdome, something unique that will draw visitors in, give them a reason to go to Leicester and spend money. £100m could get you something decent. I must say I agree. But not another Space Centre please. The city certainly doesn't need anymore empty offices
Bellend Sebastian Posted 19 December 2013 Posted 19 December 2013 I must say I agree. But not another Space Centre please. The city certainly doesn't need anymore empty offices I think two Space Centres would be excessive. Mind you, the last time I was there I did a fart that was so bad I was worried that they might need to shut it down. At least we weren't actually in space
Guest MattP Posted 19 December 2013 Posted 19 December 2013 Let's be honest Soulsby could spend it on himself and all the Labour supporters in the centre of Leicester would still vote him in next time.
Bellend Sebastian Posted 19 December 2013 Posted 19 December 2013 They made a complete shambles of Newarke Steet (great idea cheers Peter) My mate was riding his bike along there, and who should be ambling along in the middle of the cycle lane (on foot, naturally) but Soulsby himself
Webbo Posted 19 December 2013 Posted 19 December 2013 The thing about the flats in the town is you can buy a small house for the same money. How can 3 or 4 homes built on the same patch of land cost the same as a single house?

Webbo Posted 19 December 2013 Posted 19 December 2013 Capitalism Capitalism builds the small houses too.
Zingari Posted 19 December 2013 Posted 19 December 2013 My mate was riding his bike along there, and who should be ambling along in the middle of the cycle lane (on foot, naturally) but Soulsby himself he was well within his rights to knock him over , he missed a chance there !

How can 3 or 4 homes built on the same patch of land cost the same as a single house? All about location. You'd never get a house for the same price as a flat in the locations of your typical development of flats.

There were some flats in Syston that were going for £120k a few years ago, you could have easily got a terrace house or even a 2 bed semi for that. The flats were opposite some old factories.

Of course there is also a premium to pay for living in a brand new development over hundred year old Victorian terraces. People want the prestige of loving in these kind of places - I'd imagine quite a lot of them are bought to let too as people on temp contracts in the area are often happy to pay reasonable sums to rent somewhere nice. I agree that those flats do look a bit of a rip off but at the end of the day they're worth what someone is willing to pay, and people seem happy to pay quite a lot.

Tbh they did take a long time to sell and we all said no wonder at that price. Flats are the way forward with the growing population and people living on their own, they just need to make them more affordable.

Flats are the way forward with the growing population and people living on their own, they just need to make them more affordable. You need facilities to match flats if ur going to attract business. The guy who owns the riverside blocks (forgot name) accross the road to brucianis on the river has made a major loss, the type of clientele required to make a profit isn't in the city, if not careful this will be a dud!
midland_red Posted 22 December 2013 Posted 22 December 2013 this is a great idea it happens. Howevr please no more nasty student type residenes of piss poor architectural quality. The remainign factory buildings should be done up into apartments - one or two (like what is left of Frisby Jarvis) are Grade II listed. Any regeneration should build on our heritage - like keeping the old Central station. Sometimes I cant understand Leicester......have a wnder around the old Corahs plant, now mainly derelict. In London or even Manchester that would have become loft apartments years ago....where is the aspiration and ambition???????
