Bryn Posted 2 February 2014 Posted 2 February 2014 I don't see how there is any possible way in the framework of the rules that you can change it. If you commit a foul in the box, it is a penalty. If you deny a clear goalscoring opportunity, it is a red card. If you receive a straight red, it is a ban. I think you could argue for no more than a 1 game ban if there was genuine ball intent, as it is not violent conduct or anything, but you have to give a penalty and a red, for me, if a goalscoring opportunity is illegally denied in the box.
Danizen Posted 2 February 2014 Posted 2 February 2014 They should keep the rule as it is. To change it would encourage cynical fouls in the box. If the striker has got the jump on the defender, the defender needs to exercise caution and use his brains to recover (John Terry as an example is always out of position but has made a career out of it because his ability to recover and pop up with a last ditch tackle is second to none).
Captain... Posted 4 February 2014 Author Posted 4 February 2014 If I'm a defender chasing down a striker knowing that I'm gonna give a penalty away and guarantee myself only a booking he's getting chopped down. But basing that on what I said, you get a yellow for a cynical foul, as it would be anywhere else on the pitch and a second yellow for denying a goalscoring opportunity = red We don't want to make defenders too scared to tackle, and we don't want players sent off for a clumsy coming together in the box. There are lots of fouls that don't warrant a yellow card, because it is just a natural consequence of playing a contact sport, if that happens in the box though, it can be a red card and a penalty, or no advantage to the attacker. The ref has a split second to make that decision, allowing the ref more flexibility in his punishments means that there is more room to get the right decision. Take this as an example, striker shoots beats the keeper, but strikes the arm of the man on the line, the arm is in a normal position and wasn't moving towards the ball, but if it hadn't hit the arm it would have been a goal. If you give a penalty you have to send the guy off for denying a clear goal scoring chance, but if you don't they have been denied a goal.
Harry - LCFC Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 He slid in from behind and took Dzeko out, yes he got the ball, but the rules are, or were, sliding tackles from behind are outlawed. Not so. If you win the ball cleanly with zero contact on the opposing player there's no way that could be considered a foul. It's just that it's rare that this sort of thing happens. Players attempting it are always risking hitting the player first because of their position. That doesn't mean it can't be done though.
ADK Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 A red card should only be awarded when there is intent imo.
ScouseFox Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 So not only do you want a referee to get everything completely correct in a split second with one look from one angle, but you also want him to become a mind reader. Tough job.
Strokes Posted 4 February 2014 Posted 4 February 2014 I genuinely think an amber card with a sin bin should be bought in, a red card should be for violent conduct and disrepute. Then some of these horrible challenges that don't quite deserve red but a yellow is too lame, could be properly punished.
