It does strike me as a kind of mantra chanted in fragile defiance by those who can't quite come to terms with the relentless tedium and misery of existence. Whenever I hear it I can't help but think of some 30-something driving along a gloomy motorway in a mid-range indistinguishable car on their way to a meaningless job in a drab open plan office which pays them just enough to feed the family and cover the debt they've taken on in order to comply with what society told them they needed, but which actually brings them no joy at all. So then it's "chin up, come on, be strong, because I'm happpyyyy (tap the steering wheel wooo), because I'm happyyyy (yeah yeah, sing it with me), I think I'm happy (I am, I am), am I happyyyy, I don't know if I'm happyyyyy NO NO NO SING IT LOUD I AM HAPPYYYYYY YEAH I AM HAPPYYYY YEAH"Then again, maybe I'm just projecting. If people want to think themselves happy then surely that's not a bad thing. Too much moaning and negativity expressed by people these days.
