Guest MattP Posted 12 March 2014 Posted 12 March 2014 I really do think there's more to it than him though Matt. Took Charlton up (with even more points in L1 than we got), got them up to 9th last year only a few points behind us - notice it's all gone wrong for him this season when his best players have been sold and replaced with youth players/Standard Liege reserves. I'm not saying he's done a great job this season by any means but I think the problem is their owners. No co-incidence at all that it's all gone pear shaped now that they've shown up. He did a great job the years before, no doubt. Problem is they are seriously regressing now and sometimes there is no way back from that, from the performance I saw on Sunday I thought he had lost the dressing room, if the players can't get up for a FA Cup Quarter final then they have no hope. They certainly be in the position they are in as they have some fairly decent players. I do feel for him regards off the field problems though, they look like the sort of owners who will never allow a good manager to work.
Guest MattP Posted 12 March 2014 Posted 12 March 2014 And the inevitable from Sol 'buy-my-book' Campbell. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/26525537 I'm not arguing with the point before any of that starts. Jesus. Teams will actually not be appointing black managers on the basis of it will be impossible to get rid of them if this carries on for much longer.
AyewJoking Posted 12 March 2014 Posted 12 March 2014 Given the apparent love for Powell by lots of people on here, how would you feel if he gets the job at forest or derby next season?
Guest MattP Posted 12 March 2014 Posted 12 March 2014 Given the apparent love for Powell by lots of people on here, how would you feel if he gets the job at forest or derby next season? Couldn't care less personally but then I don't buy into the Powell love in. No different to any other ex player in my eyes.
Pride_Of_The_Midlands Posted 12 March 2014 Posted 12 March 2014 Without provoking a race debate, it is hard to believe there are only two working black managers across the english leagues. Good luck to guy, still early days in his management career really. How many English managers are there though?

Harry - LCFC Posted 12 March 2014 Posted 12 March 2014 Campbell's going to be on BBC This Week. Thursday 11:35pm if anyone's interested.
Guest MattP Posted 12 March 2014 Posted 12 March 2014 Campbell's going to be on BBC This Week. Thursday 11:35pm if anyone's interested. Fcuking hell. It's bad enough with one black racist on let alone two.
Mickey O'Neil Posted 12 March 2014 Posted 12 March 2014 Saw some Charlton fans interviewed earlier. They didn't want him gone. The owner sounds like that lunatic owner at Hearts. Installing his own players, insisting they play, selling players like Kermit. Idiot. I still don't want them to go down but I'm p!$$ed for the fans.

He's definitely made a mess of this season but with the amount of other things that have gone on, anyone would've regressed. This isn't my opinion on Powell clouding my view either. I like the bloke but I'd be backing the owner if he'd sacked him in fairer circumstances. Their owner is trouble and it will backfire.
Dan Posted 13 March 2014 Posted 13 March 2014 Campbell's going to be on BBC This Week. Thursday 11:35pm if anyone's interested. No doubt he doesn't get pulled apart for his racism and you get some manufactured sympathy. The whole situation with him makes me want to throw up. It's a joke.
Harry - LCFC Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Wasn't great. Mentioned his book in the first sentence and it was all a bit passive from then on. Wanted a black person in a higher position in the FA, they appointed one and he then complained that if they had really wanted change they'd have done it themselves. I think that's exactly the point though - having a black person on the FA just wasn't seen as important because there's no great loss in not having one. Paxman said to him on Newsnight "when you look at Ince and Ferdinand it doesn't seem to be true that there's discrimination against black players" he responded by saying that "for sure" he would've captained England more often if he'd been white. Just seemed to ignore the obvious contradiction. I don't want to diminish the problem too much because it is there but he really didn't seem to have anything to support his claims.
Alf Bentley Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Fcuking hell. It's bad enough with one black racist on let alone two. Did you watch This Week? No Diane Abbott....but Owen Jones instead! Is that better or worse for you?! Abbott may have been a hypocrite over education, but I think she's quite good as the lefty pundit on This Week - fulfils the requirements of having a brain, some humour and some opinions of her own. Not as good as Alan Johnson, but on a par with Alistair Campbell and a lot better than Caroline Flint or Jacqui Smith (how the hell did she ever get to be Home Secretary; she doesn't have the intellectual calibre to be a parish councillor!). Portillo is very good as the rightist pundit (can't remember who they've had as alternatives - Miguel is almost ever-present) - as is Neill in the chair, of course. Neill, Portillo, Johnson, Abbott & Campbell all easily pass my "would you enjoy going for a pint with this person" test. Owen Jones would grate after 5 minutes (even if he makes some good points), as would Flint (pleasant enough, but tediously toes the party line)....with Jacqui Smith, I'd be finding an excuse to move to the other bar - or the toilet if the pub had been knocked through! I'd like a night in with that Lib Dem woman, but better draw a veil over that... Wasn't great. Mentioned his book in the first sentence and it was all a bit passive from then on. I wasn't expecting great things of him. Saw him on Newsnight and he didn't make any sort of a case there. Was he as poor on This Week? If so, he's in danger of seriously tarnishing his reputation, not to mention damaging the cause of anti-racism in football. At a time when there's only 1 black manager (I think), there are real issues to be addressed, given the number of black footballers there have been over the past 30 years. Trying to focus all the attention on himself is unbelievably bitter and self-serving...not to mention completely unjustified, based on my superficial impression of Sol. He was a great player, but comes across as an awkward, insular character - not a personality suited to being captain. Any other views on how he came across...I saw the rest of the programme, then dozed off and woke up 5 minutes after the programme had ended....best thing I could have done?!

That's the thing that strikes me most here. If there is institutional racism in the FA then Sol Campbell is really not helping matters, he's just coming across as a bitter, self-serving, berk. He's basically becoming the footballer version of the Society of Black Lawyers. Every time I see his name I just think "what has he commented on now".

I saw Alan Johnston (another one of your boys who I think is fantastic) and Portillo, what a combination they make, and then the camera pans out and I have to tolerate Owen Jones, it was almost like someone in the BBC was taking the piss. He doesn't gripe me as much as he used to, the problem with Owen is he's actually become boring to listen to, there is no surprise about him whatsoever, you could think of any political topic in the World and you would pretty much know word for word what was going to come out of his mouth. It's the last thing politics needs. Passes the pint test easily enough for me as well, well, swop Diane for Tony of the same surname and I think we'd be onto a huge winner.
Corky Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Campbell's going to be on BBC This Week. Thursday 11:35pm if anyone's interested. The reason I see for not giving him the captaincy is that he seems totally in love with himself. He just stopped short of talking about himself in third person. "I was giving top quality performances, best defender in the world for a couple of years". Yes that might be true but let other people say it Sol.

You can watch it on iPlayer if you want to but you know, meh, not much to say about it. A lot if was a general agreement that racism existed in football but that we'd come a long way in recent years - hardly breaking news there. Campbell wanted clubs whose fans chant racist abuse to get points deducted which was as controversial as it got. They did note how changes often take a while to filter up the hierarchy. Just one of those things that takes time. The reason I see for not giving him the captaincy is that he seems totally in love with himself. He just stopped short of talking about himself in third person. "I was giving top quality performances, best defender in the world for a couple of years". Yes that might be true but let other people say it Sol. Yeah I'd agree with that. Seemed to think very highly of himself, there were other good players as well, Sol.
