lancyclaret Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Take this as a light-hearted look at the procession to the Championship title. Our only hope this season is if the Foxes do a "Burnley 1962" and give the title away on a plate to the second club. In the 1961/62, Burnley were arguably the best team in England and scoring an average about 3 goals a game while seemingly romping to their second title in three seasons - most Burnley fans rated the team better than the 1960 Championship winning side. Their only serious rivals were under-rated Ipswich, a newly-promoted team of journeymen managed by one Alf Ramsey, who later went on to lead England to a World Cup triumph. Ipswich doggedly stayed within reach of Burnley for most of the season but Burnley were always at least 2/3 points ahead (only 2 points for a win in those days) and usually had one or two games in hand because of an FA Cup run. After beating Aston Villa 2-0 at Villa Park on March 24, Burnley were 2 points clear with a precious TWO games in hand. 10 to play against Ipswich's 8. Then Burnley's wheels came off and they won only ONE of their last 10 games, drawing 5 and losing 4. Ipswich won 5, drew 2 and lost only 1 (0-5 at Man U) of their last 8 and won the title by three points. Only consolation was Burnley finished with 101 goals. To compound their misery Burnley lost 3-1 to Spurs in the FA Cup final. )...So the Foxes cannot do something similar can they? You are the confident, free-scoring team while we are the unglamorous but spirited underdogs, led by an up-and-coming manager, who refuse to go away quite yet. Somehow, I don't think so and I cannot see Sean Dyche leading England to World Cup glory in 2018. )
ScouseFox Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 even if we collapse and take points at the same rate as that burnley side (0.8 points per game) we will finish on 87 and still come second imo. we won't though we're not shit.
lancyclaret Posted 14 March 2014 Author Posted 14 March 2014 I just checked back to that season - Burnley had to play their last 10 league games in 27 days!!!!! Plus an FA Cup semi-final and a replay. Could even Man City play 12 games in 27 days? The players must have been almost super-human.....Burnley had to play Good Friday and the following day (Saturday)...Ipswich only played on the Friday so no wonder they overtook us.
davieG Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 We did something similar the season after when bottled the cup final.
lancyclaret Posted 14 March 2014 Author Posted 14 March 2014 No substitutes then, either, and travel to away games was harder (no planes etc). I wonder how Wenger would have coped:)
Guest Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 not meant as an attack but does Burnley have an interesting fan site or not?
lancyclaret Posted 14 March 2014 Author Posted 14 March 2014 There is ClaretsMad but too heavily censored with posts being deleted for no reason at all. You are not allowed any criticism of directors or chairman.

lancyclaret Posted 14 March 2014 Author Posted 14 March 2014 I bet 90% of Leicester fans would NOT even be allowed to post on ClaretsMad. Try doing it before or after our game against each other this month. The editor is very choosy and likes to show his power and authority.
LanguedocFox Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 We did almost exactly the same the following season, only in a sense it was even worse. In mid-April, we beat Man U to go top with five games left in the season. A couple of weeks later, we beat Liverpool in the FA Cup semis: in the final we would play Man U - who were fighting relegation! We drew one and lost the final four games in the season, to finish fourth, and we lost in the FA Cup Final. Burnley finished third.

I was banned from there after posting once (and what I posted was completely innocuous). Stupid really, because it's good to get the perspective of other fans, providing their polite and reasonable.
Kitchandro Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 At least you bloody won one! 62/63 will forever be our biggest regret. It was 30 years before I was born and it still winds me up
lancyclaret Posted 14 March 2014 Author Posted 14 March 2014 ClaretsMad is run with an iron fist (dictator style) by ClaretTony. It is the busiest Burnley forum but Tony has his gang of henchmen (moderators) who pounce on anything or anyone slightly critical of the club. If Burnley were rock bottom now, you would be allowed to criticise the manager or players but NOT the board. Even after he appointed the woeful Brian Laws, no criticism of the chairman was allowed.
lancyclaret Posted 14 March 2014 Author Posted 14 March 2014 At least you bloody won one! 62/63 will forever be our biggest regret. It was 30 years before I was born and it still winds me up The strange thing about the 1959/60 title winning team (not as good as 61/62) is that they were NEVER top until after the final match - a 2-1 win at Man City.
shade Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 At least you bloody won one! 62/63 will forever be our biggest regret. It was 30 years before I was born and it still winds me up you're in your early twenties?
LanguedocFox Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 At least you bloody won one! 62/63 will forever be our biggest regret. It was 30 years before I was born and it still winds me up Consider yourself lucky: I was 17 at the time, and I can remember the end of the season like it was yesterday. By the time the Cup Final came along, the league season was over and we just knew it was going to end in tears at Wembley - and we were right.
LC/FC Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Closest thing I can comment on to relate would either be is last season's bottle job or Newcastle United and Keegan's iconic meltdown. Love it! John Gregory's thing with Villa deserves a shout too.
bluesbrothers Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 Somehow, I don't think so and I cannot see Sean Dyche leading England to World Cup glory in 2018. ) Come to think of it, has any ginger man, whether player or manager, ever lifted the World Cup (or even European Cup?) Stats geeks, you know what to do.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 14 March 2014 Posted 14 March 2014 We did something similar the season after when bottled the cup final. We were still the best Leicester side ever. Today's team would be rock bottom.
Oxfordfox83 Posted 15 March 2014 Posted 15 March 2014 We were still the best Leicester side ever. Today's team would be rock bottom. What's got into you DT? You've spent the season being the reformed WUM, insightful and interesting on our history, and (at least to my mind) amusing on Arry. Last few days, all we've had from you is how shît the current team is relative to the past. Which is drivel. This is comfortably the best team we've had since Lennon left, and from all I can gather better than all the pre-Elliott teams going back to the 70s (born in 83, so might be wrong on McAllister/Lineker era...) Now, this side is not FA Cup finalists multiple times, title challengers, League Cup winners or fielding major internationals. We know that. But they are romping to the title, winning difficult games (often making them look easy) and surprising us week in and week out with their focus and consistency to dominate their rivals. So what's the point of your posts?
sulfoxide Posted 15 March 2014 Posted 15 March 2014 I don't think any team can be measured by whatever has happened in the past when they have a different set of players, leadership and management
suffolk fox Posted 15 March 2014 Posted 15 March 2014 Come to think of it, has any ginger man, whether player or manager, ever lifted the World Cup (or even European Cup?) Stats geeks, you know what to do. Just noticed this Alan Ball did for England 1966
