Will sign.

Used to go drinking there a lot when I worked on Scudamore Road.

With the amount of money Soulsby wastes I'm amazed he's the least bit concerned about this.

Western Park has given pleasure - and often the first experience of golf, and the standards of sportsmanship expected in playing the game - to thousands.

This, of course, is the same Soulsby who will spend millions on bus lanes many don't agree with, use or want, more unnecessary millions on a pretentious new market food hall that will house only a sparse number of traders and never come close to justifiying its cost and who proposes giving valuable city buildings away to various supposedly deserving occupants for £1 or somesuch nominal sum....and that's just for starters.

Signed.

My grandparents lived just off Liberty Road & Western Park is an integral part of the area......not just for golf.

I have played Humberstone Heights & Western Park more times than any other golf course & it's where I first started playing.  It's open to everyone & anyone - not just those that can afford outrageous membership fees at private courses.

I live in Cosby & have played there a few times as a guest.  A very nice course, but ridiculously expensive & incredible snobbery.

Why it's called Western Park Golf Club, I'll never know! I wonder how many people who live in western park actually use it? Perhaps a small increase in prices as a compromise.

How about, instead of 100,000 signatures, people donate £1.50 each?

Problem sorted!

I would, but a very dangerous precedent to set and I certainly wouldn't want us giving politicians more get out clauses in how to spend tax payers money.

why should golf be subsidised by the taxpayer at all ?

Because it's a fantastic British past time that unless clubs like this that exist would only be available to play if you are rich?

Not to mention an very welcoming place that is a big part of the local community.

So make it a charitable thing then and raise money from donations if it's that important to the community ,

You wanna cut down on benefits , i wanna cut down on this shite too

Why should all taxpayers be forced to pay for things we ain't got no interest in ?

The councils should stick to mending the shit roads ,  emptying the bins , keeping the streets lights working etc etc and all that sort of essential stuff , not getting involved in this stuff anymore .

We're living in austere times remember , we all have to make sacrifices   :)

These are valuable assets for the community, it's not just a gold course either, closing something like this has a huge effect on the environment. Notto mention the exercise people get from this.

They have a sports budget of 3million. I don't think its worth shutting down golf for ordinary people for 150 k of that, even more so when he's about to give buildings away for a quid to people who'll vote for him.

We can't spend every penny on spongers, the disabled and the homeless. You do have give something to normal folk as well in society.

How much does it cost to maintain a pretty shabby golf course?  You cut the grass, fill the bunkers with sand, prune the shrubs & trees, a bit of fertiliser here & there & a clubhouse to maintain.  It has, over the years, been left to go to ruin & now needs substantial investment to bring it up to scratch.  Where is the money taken from golfers going?

Western Park could be viewed as much a park in the conventional sense, as much as it is a golf course.

The sale of the land to property developers is worth more to the council than it's value to the community.

The only reason the Lubbesthorpe development is going ahead is because the council receive a large bundle of cash from the government for every new house built.

You forgot to mention the cost of moving the burnt out cars from the greens.

I know a guy who dropped a turd in the bunker on the 14th once as well.

Ha ha. Caddies at the Italian Open used to camp at the back of the 9th green. More than one pro flew the green to find himself with a plugged ball.

You do take your life into your own hands as you make your way through Braunstone/Kirby Frith.

Kids running across the fairway pinching your golf balls & trying to sell them back to you.

I know . I grew up on the other side of the park .

These days the kids of those kids are selling crack and Uzis.

That's evolution.
