digitalalba Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 "It is one of the most isolated island communities in the world. The tiny Pacific island of Palmerston is visited by a supply ship twice a year - at most - and the long and hazardous journey deters all but the most intrepid visitors. What's more, most of its 62 inhabitants are descended from one man - an Englishman who settled there 150 years ago. This generosity, and the island's etiquette, legal system and traditions have all been passed down through the generations by word of mouth. And they are all the legacy of one man born in the English county of Leicestershire, 10,000 miles away." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-25430383 If you google map it, its south of Hawaii and north east of New Zealand, then in between American Samoa and Cook Islands, nearer to the later. Zoom in and on the satellite imagery, unfortunately, Leicester looks like a jungle, potential football pitch? Be great if someone could flagup a city shirt, maybe Chris Wood on his way to or from his home country
Rincewind Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 There is also a Leicester in America. And a Leicester United football team. It is a school side but I contacted them a year or two back. Maybe they should have an update on our progress.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 Leicester is a city and the county town of Leicestershire, England. Leicester may also refer to: PlacesLeicester, Massachusetts Leicester (town), New York, in Livingston County Leicester (village), New York, within the town of Leicester Leicester, North Carolina Leicester, Vermont Leicester Township, Clay County, Nebraska
Rincewind Posted 7 April 2014 Posted 7 April 2014 I think it was the top one I was connected to. I did not realise they were only a school side until I had emailed them. Lost the info after changing computers. They seemed keen on associating with us though and thanked me for my interest. I am sure the others would too. Bars to watch soccer in New York Saw a link to City supporter club too.
MPH Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 I live about 2 hours from Leicester, here in North Carolina. But never been. Shocking. It's on my list of things to do this year...
OzFox Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 A mate of mine is a rabid Chelsea fan. He's never been that fond of us and likes to bring up the Erland Johnsen swallow dive at every opportunity. Anyway, a few years back he went on a pilgrimage to the town where he grew up in Germany, only to find it had been twinned with Leicester and the street where he was born had been renamed "Leicesterstrasse". How I laughed

Anyway, a few years back he went on a pilgrimage to the town where he grew up in Germany, only to find it had been twinned with Leicester and the street where he was born had been renamed "Leicesterstrasse". How I laughed Krefeld? I've been drunk on the platform of the Hauptbahnhof there but never in the city itself.
OzFox Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 Krefeld? I've been drunk on the platform of the Hauptbahnhof there but never in the city itself. I assume so. From Wiki: Since 1973, the fire services of Leicester and twin city Krefeld have played each other in an annual 'friendly' football match
Buce Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 Krefeld? I've been drunk on the platform of the Hauptbahnhof there but never in the city itself. That deserves a thread of its own: 'Interesting places you've been drunk'.
MooseBreath Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 A lot on here would benefit from a stint on leicester island. Imagine people used to living off handouts or worse, in cushy public sector jobs forced into actually fending for themselves. They'd all have drowned in each other's tears by tea time on day one
Smiffy Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 I live about 2 hours from Leicester, here in North Carolina. But never been. Shocking. It's on my list of things to do this year... I've driven through it once and I assure you that you're missing nothing...at all!
MPH Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 I've driven through it once and I assure you that you're missing nothing...at all! There's surely a photo op with a road sign AT LEAST!?
Fox92 Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 Did anyone see DMU became partners with a uni in Brazil... One of the Brazilian students who is at DMU was like "when I say to students in Brazil I've been in Leicester, they reply 'Leicester square?'"
Smiffy Posted 10 April 2014 Posted 10 April 2014 There's surely a photo op with a road sign AT LEAST!? I'd go for the "Bat Cave" sign which is up that way before the Leicester sign.
AndWhat? Posted 11 April 2014 Posted 11 April 2014 I live about 2 hours from Leicester, here in North Carolina. But never been. Shocking. It's on my list of things to do this year... Would love to hear how they pronounce it. Liesestor
MPH Posted 12 April 2014 Posted 12 April 2014 I'd go for the "Bat Cave" sign which is up that way before the Leicester sign. Bugger. I've been to bat cave en route to Cherokee. Admittedly, that was before I realized there was a Leicester in the area...
MPH Posted 12 April 2014 Posted 12 April 2014 Would love to hear how they pronounce it. Liesestor The inhabitants of this particular Leicester pronounce it the same way as we do. Which warmed my heart immensely. Someone I work with used to work there.
