MPH Posted 8 May 2014 Posted 8 May 2014 Ukraine have got to be backed at 10/1. Will be picking up sympathy votes from everywhere after recent events. Some people would have you believe it's not political!
DennisNedry Posted 8 May 2014 Posted 8 May 2014 No chance. The song isn't any good anyway, and even if it was the UK has no chance in Eurovision.
The Doctor Posted 8 May 2014 Posted 8 May 2014 Believe me, she will buck the trend. Doesnt matter if we brought the beatles back and out of the grave, If they respresent the United Kingdom at the Eurovision song contest, they'll not finish in the top ten. Voting is too political now - no one likes us since we got all Pally Pally with the U.S in Afghanistan.. Eh, the Beatles would probably win it, Shit music always does.
Guest MattP Posted 8 May 2014 Posted 8 May 2014 Were you watching, then? Who were you rooting for? And, er, precisely why did you care? :knock: :nuge: :top: No I won't be watching. Ukraine. Because I've spotted a sneaky chance to make some money.
Alf Bentley Posted 8 May 2014 Posted 8 May 2014 No I won't be watching. Ukraine. Because I've spotted a sneaky chance to make some money. Fair dos! Sorry about the slightly sarky tone, by the way....but my 1am posts should always be taken with a large pinch of salt (went to watch Man City v. Villa in the pub and had a couple more on my return, with inevitable consequences for mental processes!)

Corky Posted 8 May 2014 Posted 8 May 2014 The only chance she's got of winning is if she changes her nationality. Yep, not enough home grown acts coming through. I think a Eurovision B league will get them the chance to practice in local clubs and bars and get the experience to set them up for the final challenge. We'll win it every year if we do.
fleckneymike Posted 8 May 2014 Posted 8 May 2014 And yet the top three songs each year are quality pieces of music? Quick google search shows last years winner went top 10 in 7 countries, the year before went top 10 in 35 (number 1 in 19) and before that was a flop but was also the lowest scoring winner ever.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 9 May 2014 Posted 9 May 2014 The song itself is dreadful. No chance of a slightly decent showing.

Would you buy our Eurovision songs? No. Then why the **** do we expect a bunch of foreigners to? So even though she was third favorite ( and the other favorites did very well) she Finished 17th I think it was. And people STILL believe it's not political?
The Doctor Posted 11 May 2014 Posted 11 May 2014 So even though she was third favorite ( and the other favorites did very well) she Finished 17th I think it was. And people STILL believe it's not political? But the performance was dull, and she came last in the performances - by that point you need to put in one hell of a performance to change peoples minds. There's a political element to it, but clearly not as much as people like to claim given how many votes Russia got despite the world and it's dog hating them right now.

Russia wouldn't of got a quarter (if not more) of its votes if it wasn't for its clique of former USSR bloc states. Same can be said for Armenia, although I thought they were half decent.

It's the same reason why we get points from Spain and Ireland - because of the British expat communities there.

Maybe we should start a new colonising programme, send the likes of Lamby off to Azerbaijan and get us votes over there.
bovril Posted 11 May 2014 Posted 11 May 2014 For the people who always say it's political, how exactly do the politics work then? President of one country gets on the phone to their TV station and says, "look I know 99% of our population have once again voted for the superb British entry, but after their intervention in Iraq we're not going to give them anything, give the 12 points to Armenia instead mwahahahah" (while stroking a cat).

It's more geopolitical. Areas like Belarus, Armenia and Azebaijan are more likely to give each other votes because they share the same ethnicity (or similar at least) and religion (Islam in this case). On top of that these areas, plus parts of Ukraine, Georgia, etc. all have a high Russian presence from the old USSR days. It's like how the Irish vote for us (similar culture) and Spain (lots of retired British as well as expats) always give us points.

And Belarus, Armenia and Azerbaijan don't share ethnicity or religion at all, they're 3 extremely different countries. I like the contest for the fact it bizzarely winds up a few Mail reading types disgusted that Armenia votes for Azerbaijan etc etc and our plucky Brits never win anymore.

Molly wasn't going to win it, she definitely wasn't the best. But to finish 17th was ridiculous considering she was third favourite. There's also a clear correlation of neighbours voting for each other, and it's not decided simply on public votes. There's also a panel of experts whose decision makes up half of the final points awarding. For example, Poland was voted top by public vote but bottom by the panel, meaning it scored none or very little points. It's very possible that in other countries the panel is more inclined to vote based on geographical location than skill.

I would of thought it would be the other way round... As she was last, she would of been fresh in people's minds...
The Doctor Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 I would of thought it would be the other way round... As she was last, she would of been fresh in people's minds... Not really, by that point people have usually made up their minds on what they're voting for.
DB11 Posted 12 May 2014 Posted 12 May 2014 **** all to do with politics and all to do with shit songs. Would you buy our Eurovision songs? No. Then why the **** do we expect a bunch of foreigners to? Would you buy any songs?
