You won't be able to migrate the programs to a new HD, just the raw data on the disk. You will have to reinstall any required apps.

Can you not re-install the drivers? :dunno:

tried that, the reinstall failed, but the driver was still there with code 39.

Right, my dads had a new game for a laptop, it says it needs to connect to the internet to verify ownership. But it won't connect to the internet. Any way round it?

On games like that there's normally a phoning option as well?

Check the support on the game manufacturer's web site.

I have had major problems with my computer and have had to completely restore the system.

Fortunately this has gone pretty trouble free but what is annoying me is the scrolling speeds on internet pages, plus when scrolling down a page it goes down about 1/3 of the page after a long delay. Before my old system on the same computer crashed I never used to have this problem so I don't think its something that cannot be resolved.

Can anybody help?

Thanks in advance,

Help! ^^^^^^^^^^^^

I've got exactly the same problem from two and a half years ago, can anyone help?

Managed to get some arsehole virus on yesterday so I've had to do exactly what I did before and format the hard drive and reinstall windows. It's ok at the minute but this scrolling thing is really annoying me. Problem is I can't remember how I solved it last time.

Graphics driver.

Is there somewhere I can download it from or sort it out?

Sorry I'm pretty awful with anything beyond the basic workings of a computer.

what is your graphics card and system specs?

I'm not sure, anywhere I can find out on the computer? It's an Intel Pentium 4 Processor 550 Windows XP.

Its a while since I used XP. Try start/accessories/system tools/system information. Then components then display.

Sorry I'm pretty awful with anything beyond the basic workings of a computer.

Go start > run > type "dxdiag" and press enter.

Go to the 'Display' tab. What is the name of the device? Left hand side.

Alternatively, instead of the name, go to the manufacturers web site and the chip type is what you need to look for under the support bit.

NB: If you're missing the graphics driver after a restore, you're probably missing other drivers to. Go to (right click) My Computer > Properties > Hardware > Device Manager and see which ones have a yellow exclamation mark.

Right, I promise I'll leave this thread alone soon as I'm nearly there. lol

Graphics thing has been sorted.

Two more problems:

1) It's not crucial as all the Office stuff works, but it's annoying. Obviously I had to reinstall Microsoft Office which seemed to work fine except when registering it online which took more than one attempt (but eventually worked). However, when I go to use Word, Excel e.t.c. it comes up with "configuring process" and it does some kind of installing thing for about 30 seconds before loading the program. Now they work normally so it's not the end of the world but it's annoying so any help would be appreciated greatly.

2) I've found the sound driver (I think) and I reckon I installed it ok, but there still isn't any sound and having gone into the control panel there is no driver recognized anywhere. The irony is that installing the driver seemed to sort the graphics perfectly but not the sound (which is a good job because the graphics driver install doesn't work)

Sorry to be a computer dunce. lol

EDIT: Solved the Microsoft Office problem by uninstalling and reinstalling, still stuck on 2) :/

Post a screenshot of the device manager.

You're missing the chipset, a network adapter (if you expand the 'Network adapters' I can see if it's either a lan port, wireless etc.) and also sound.

For the chipset you'll get it from the motherboard manufacturer's site.

For the network adapter you can probably get it from the motherboard manufacturer's web site, unless it's a card, in which case visit the manufacturer's web site of the card.

For the sound, probably the motherboard manufacturer's site, unless you have a sound card, in which case visit the manufacturer's web site of the card.

What do you mean "old files", are you talking about the "Windows.old" folder, if you are then that causes all sorts of problems, alwys best to do a clean install but copy and paste the files you want out of there, make sure you have all the files you need and delete the whole "Windows.old" folder.

He said pics so I think he means old pictures.
