Hi Samlcfc,

On the CD drive/DVD itself you should see a little hole, normally if you shove a paperclip in, it'll open up.

The cd drive is just a little slit in the side that takes the cd in when you hold it there. Is it a normal drive that you are talking about? Thanks for your help anyway

Any drive should have the little hole.

Nah, some which are built-in (like a Wii) don't have it. Turning the PC off and back on though will usually clear whatever is preventing the disk from ejecting. Sometimes you then need to quickly hit the eject button soon after rebooting, i.e. before the Operating System loads up, in case it's a problem with the driver for the CD drive causing the trouble.

Help!

Has anyone dealt with monitor maintenance before? I've got a problem with our desktop computer where the monitor just goes black after about 5 seconds, although the green light stays on. When you turn the monitor off and back on again the normal display returns for about 2 seconds before going off again. I've googled it and a common problem seems to be the inverter board (whatever that is), although having shone a torch on the screen and nothing appears, I'm beginning to doubt that.

Can anyone suggest anything, would rather not be shelling out for a new monitor.

Thanks in advance.

You've not altered the screen resolution by any chance have you?

When do you lose the screen? Is it when it finishes POST and starts booting into Windows? I'm assuming you are running Windows!

The signal from your pc could be 'Out of range' for the monitor - especially LCD/TFT monitors. However most monitors do tell you if the signal is beyond it!

EDIT: Should have added. Can you boot into safe mode?

Not as far as I know.

The computer usually takes about a minute to boot up and I lose it pretty much at the end of the boot up.

Not really sure about this ^, I can't really see it being the problem in this case although I'm not really a computer intellect.

EDIT: Should have added. Can you boot into safe mode?

Ermmmm I guess so yes.

Thanks for your help btw

Keep pressing F8 repeatedly when you have powered-on the PC. This should load a very basic Windows with minimum drivers (Safe mode)

If you can do this and fully boot into safe mode then it looks like a resolution problem which you should be able to resolve in safe mode.

BTW: Is it a HP Pavilion monitor? They do have inverter problems - easily fixed with a soldering iron and a steady hand.

Ok, will have a go at this, cheers

Go into your BIOS's Boot screen this might be f2 or delete but will be on the screen when you first turn it on.

Set Boot preference to CD/DVD drive first

Restart with the Recovery disc inside

Follow the instructions. Tread carefully do not format or partition your drive otherwise you will loose everything. This link should help

Reset your boot screen to hard drive after you have finished.

If that doesn't work, you may have a hard drive failing.

yep. complete failure of the hard drive. got to fit a new one now.

Booting it in safe mode and VGA mode doesn't change anything unfortunately; just a couple of seconds and the screen goes black with the green light still on. It's a Compaq FP7317 monitor.

It's looking likely I'll have to shell out for a new monitor :(

That's odd that none will work. Do you have the latest service packs installed? That might be an issue if you haven't. The other common denominator is the desktop. If you have all the upgrades, try opening the application from it's program file. If that works, the shortcuts have been corrupted on your desktop

Service packs all up to date

Thanks, tried opening from prog file, still no good.

Have tried downloading again... still no good

:@ bloody computers.. if it wasnt for all the pron and access to LCFC information...

Just a quick query, how can I tell whether my new monitor is analogue or digital?

If you have a connection at the back which is slightly wider than the normal VGA (it should also be white) then it can support Digital. Never use both VGA and DVI at the same time unless the monitor can support switching which not many do.

These links might help...

Right, our Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop was working fine until recently, all the drivers got corrupted, with a 'Code 39'.

This includes, the modem, the wifi chip, the speakers, basically anything you plug in. The usb's and dvd drive were down as well, but we managed to fix those, but with the usbs we have no clue how we did it.

We've searched the net high and low, tried everything its said, and to no avail.

We've also used the discs that came with, and nothing happened.

Anyone able to help?

Thanks.

I was expecting you to give me a smart-ass comment about 'this not happening on a mac', but thanks. Now we've got the USB's running we can back-up all of our stuff. Dad's going to talk to the IT Techs at work, and then see, but I reckon your right.

If you have stuff on the hard drive which needs recovering it is possible to grab it off before wiping the disk, but you'll need a second computer.

Bottom line: you don't need to worry, it's solvable...just a royal pain in the arse.
