kingfox Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 Dear kingfox, you're on a roll today! Erm... Chile played great, effective and clever football against Spain, so yes, you have to be great to win matches. They clearly have some of the best players around, otherwise they wouldn't have made it to the World Cup in the first place, edging out other South American biggies in the process. Costa Rica aren't that great, yet they beat both Uruguay and Italy who are in the top 10 of the Fifa rankings. Chile, Colombia & Costa Rica have worked incredibly hard as teams in this tournament, they have great togetherness, and they utilise the pace in their sides to great affect. Look at Chile's players though, there are many teams who are better equipped in terms of quality. Sanchez & Vidal are stand outs, then you look at other players Gonzalo Jara for instance, Mena who I've been impressed with, Marcelo Diaz, are not the best players around tbh, but have contributed and worked so hard for Chile in this tournament.
kingfox Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 Out of interest, how come you always come up with these really 'insightful' posts just after the things you're describing have happened? It was half time, so it was my half time thoughts, something I've done throughout the tournament. So that is why.
Guest Col city fan Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 Too busy counting their money. To be fair, Costa Rica's performances at this World Cup should leave some of our 'superstars' feeling ashamed. They won't. I'm not sure they actually give a shite. Or if they do, the thought of another 300k paid into the bank this week will soften the blow.
kingfox Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 Because he copies what a lot of pundits say and tries to pass it off as his own. Does it on most sports he talks about. Except tennis, and then it become blatantly obvious he's clueless. This again, just because I don't rate Dan Evans, who has done nothing since the US Open.
Dan Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 Absolutely depressing, but got what we deserved. Performance wise, Costa Rica have genuinely looked the best team out of the four. Italy were absolutely shocking. The so called group of death has probably produced the worst standard out of all eight groups.
BoneDog Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 It took me 17 years of hard manual graft to earn £300,000. If it wasn't for muffs, parties and beer I could have been a footballer.
FrankieADZ Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 I doubt they will be questioning themselves, they will be pleased that they get to go home now as being at a World Cup is boring... Too busy counting their money. ah good points, Least they can go on holiday now and post 1000s of pictures on Instagram, twitter etc saying how great it is and how deserved it is,
Alf Bentley Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 Costa Rica just seemed well prepared and well organised on every level, more so than any of their 3 group rivals. They got their tactics spot on, closing down from the front and not allowing Pirlo any space, while playing an astonishingly high defensive line themselves - and one that their defenders maintained with scrupulous discipline. They clearly calculated that Italy wouldn't have sufficient pace running from deep against a high defensive line to create many chances - and they were absolutely right. They also backed themselves to pass the ball better than the Italians in a tight midfield -and they were right again. One small detail: did you see that Italian free-kick from just outside the Costa Rican area (second half). The keeper deliberately lined up a 4-man wall, with 3 men standing together, then a gap and then the 4th man - and stood directly behind the gap. Presumably he thought that he had a better chance leaving the gap but seeing the ball early (watching the taker's foot?). Not sure I've ever seen that before. Was that just opportunistic, as surely the Italians might have opted to stick one of their players in the gap? It worked this time, anyway. Football is a team game - and in Group D the best team (and arguably the poorest collection of individuals) has just qualified for the next round. That's justice. I hope that Uruguay now go on to beat Italy, as they have a lot more to offer than the Italians. I'm sorry that England are out. I'd have preferred them to have a better run, obviously. But, on the positive side, all the temporary football fans and temporary patriots will now disappear from the pub with their St. George's flags and their jugs of Pimms, leaving it to us drunkards and true football fans...the way it should be!
MooseBreath Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 Italy could well lose to Uruguay now. High profile European teams dropping like flies. As dissapointing as it is for us, it really has been a superb tournament so far. Hope to see some of thesw smaller nations making it to the latter stages.
MC Prussian Posted 20 June 2014 Posted 20 June 2014 What do you want me to do now.. Find out one of my posts for you? Get a life Michael.. It's because you didn't say it.
CosbehFox Posted 21 June 2014 Posted 21 June 2014 Might be a bit little Inglander to say but if this game proved how teams want to raise their game against England. For all the shit we get, they are atill made parts of our game which are envy for the rest of the world. Something FIFA hate.
