'Gay cake' row

Except originally they accepted the order, I think if when the order was placed they had said they were not comfortable with the design and the message there would probably have been less fuss. Clearly the local branch had no issue with it, but head office refused it and stated Christian beliefs.

Incidentally I'm watching the news about Israelis and Palestinians killing each other, and thinking that a gay cake is really quite irrelevant.

ah then that changes things a bit, the bakery has not honoured a contract so they are in the wrong and the customer should be taking legal action.

My previous post was mainly a response to this.

"The problem with both sides saying its against the individual's right is the biggest trap. On one hand, he owns a business and should have the right to choose his customers, but then as a result certain groups could be shunned, and effectively their rights as well."

I took this to mean that an individual has a right to choose who he does business with unless his reason for not consenting to a trade is due to the race/gender/sexuality of the other party. Which basically means that individuals have no right to choose who they do business with because a right has to be inalienable and not up for negotiation or it ceases to be a right. The statement struck me as a dangerous grey area compromise, an attitude that has contributed more to the erosion of peoples rights and freedoms than nay other.

Nope. The word can mean different things depending on where it's used.

There are certain beliefs that we would describe as intolerant because they are nasty and unpleasant. If I am unwilling to accept such views it is because I wish to see this unpleasantness removed. This makes me intolerant but in a very different sense.

I'm sure you can empathise with me here.

You know what it's like to be intolerant of certain religious views, I've heard you say it, but I doubt you'd call yourself a bad person because of it. I'm sure your reason for opposing them is the same as mine i.e. that you think they're harmful to society.

I'm intolerant of a small number of views that cause harm like Islamic extremism being peddled in British schools but this is about a bloke baking a cake, hardly the same thing. The gay should have respected the god-botherers religious views and moved on, problem solved, no harm done to anyone.

However, Alliance councillor Andrew Muir - who hosted the civic event for which the cake was ordered - said he fully supported the action taken against the bakery.

"Businesses should not be able to pick and choose who they serve," Mr Muir said.

So a person running his own business can't decide which jobs to take on? Absolute joke.

You do without question have to be a complete fool to equate fair and equal access to services to a bakery refusing to stick something on a cake which the baker finds offensive. Would they have refused to make that cake if I took it in to be made? Yes of course - so why is this discrimination against homosexuals?
