For car owners

Recommended Posts

Changes are being made to how you tax your car(s) If you default it could be a £1000 fine. Could it make the buying of a second hand car more difficult. so no more cheap ones for students or those with tight budgets to manage?. i'm not a car owner so it does not affect me so will leave checking the finer details to others.

I cannot make a valid judgement whether it is a good or bad thing. I am only the messenger boy.

Er, no, that's not what it says at all.

No it doesnt. I read that on a post on Facebook. I said as i was not a car owner I would not know. Isnt there something about you cant sell a car with tax remaining? Or am I misunderstanding what they meant.

Anyway I'll leave this for the car owners to fight over I'm done. I only meant to post the link.

Changed it to a question for you.

Basically same as now but tax is non-transferrable, electronic and payable by Direct Debit. Seems like a good idea, saves on postage/physical discs and will eliminate tax disc theft (not too common but does occur)

Rincey - why not read the article you posted? Doesn't say you can't sell a car with tax remaining. It says the existing tax becomes null but the seller receives the remaining amount back as a reimbursement, it is then the new owners duty to tax the vehicle.

Loving the idea of monthly payments. I hate having to find £140 odd one month every year. Whilst I'm not destitute, and I know I could save a tenner each month for it, I don't, so this makes life much easier. All this article is saying is there will be a few changes in procedure and it'll make the transferring of a car to a new owner a much tighter ship, which can't be bad thing. Also means it's going to be harder to skip paying for your car tax, which again seeing as we all have to pay it, catching those who don't can't be a bad thing either. And with monthly payments it's much less likely you'll forget anyway. And you can still pay yearly if you want, so there's more choice for everyone. Honestly can't see a down side to this.

EDIT: And yes, I agree with JJJS, why don't you ever read anything before you post it Ken. Seriously, I don't want your opinion on something when you don't even know what you're giving your opinion on. It actually discredits you when you do post about something you've read up about, because people assume you're talking about something you have no clue about.

Sorry I only read a bit on FB then posted the link. I wrongly trusted the post to know what it meant. I skimmed the article I changed the statement to a question which  it should have been. I admit it made it look as if I was voicing an opinion on something I have no opinion on.

It's fine apologising Ken and it's accepted, but you keep doing it. There's no point saying sorry if you going to continue littering FT with links to things you've never read.

I have found loads of links that I have read and could post but I wont because some opinions will not change if I do so they are wasted on them.

If others want to post them there are plenty of stories about and concern the average man on the street out there that are missed by the mainstream media , from a wide variety of sources.

I am happy to see others post them. I'm too busy elsewhere to do it now and lifes too short to spend it arguing over things that will never be agreed upon.

I am not going upset the majority of the decent posters for the sake of one or two who quite frankly enjoy winding people up. I am getting too old to play along. :)

I love you all really.

I'm not against the new system, the tax disc was a very dated method. I think I read somewhere you won't need insurance to tax a vehicle too, does anyone know if this is right?

And there you go, on a big rambling post about stories not in the mainstream etc etc. Nothing to do with anything anyone said.

I don't care how many links you post that you have read, you still post quite a few you haven't. People pull you up on it, and you say sorry, then do it again days later. For all I care you can post as many links to as many stories as you like, you can even put crappy non funny pictures in the phunny photos thread, but all we ask is that if you post a link, read it first. Say what you want, post anything you like, but just read it before you do. It's not difficult and unreasonable request is it?

It's a bit of an arse to have to also tax a car when you buy it. I imagine many older people will get caught out by this and I hope the government exercises some common sense as the new system eases in.

I'm struggling to find anything concrete but they were talking about removing the compulsory check on insurance when paying VED, the logic being that if a car isn't declared SORN it has to be insured by law anyway. It was an extra tier of checking, basically

Will certainly make the £475 a year on the Range Rover less irritating.

I've had cars that cost less than that.

Fair enough. It also works both ways like ignoring the article and picking up on a typo or just replying with 'well what else do you expect from lefties? I post things on Twitter and facebook now anyway. Reach more people who are willing to be open minded.

Back to topic. How does it work if someone is stopped by the police? There is no tax disc on view with a date.

If I was a car driver I would prefer DD but for peop;e that do not use them it would be difficult. That number would be few though.

You can't really blame people for ignoring articles if you can't be bothered to read it yourself.

They have a machine in some cars and I believe static cameras which can recognise the number plates and run checks.

I got stopped recently for not having tax, but I had renewed and even had an up to date tax disc but the system was apparently 'playing up'.

Not sure I believed them. I have a personalised plate (not my choice, company car). Not saying its definitely linked but I've been pulled over a lot more in that than in any other car.

No, not fair enough. Why is the fact Moosey or MattP are too ignorant to read things an excuse for you to do the same? You should rise above that, not use it as excuse to be ignorant and lazy. And if you do read stuff, when they call you a typical lefty you can throw facts back at them from what you've learnt from reading the stuff you you've posted beforehand. And anyway it's not the same, when they don't read your posts, they're ignoring you. When you don't read a link you post, you addressing the whole forum and expecting us to take time to read something you couldn't be arsed to.

Is the chauffeur extra?

What is your problem with people? He's got a range rover and it's got expensive tax so you automatically give a a sarcastic response.

People work and people save to buy good things.
