David Guiza Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Not sure if this has been done before, but I've saw it a few times on social media. Basically, a list of 10 films that have inspired/had some kind of affect on your life in some way. I'll kick off with - 1. The Godfather - Tough between this and Part II. Incredible from start to finish. More than just a gangster movie, iconic. 2. A Clockwork Orange - Kubrick at his best 3. Fight Club - Brilliant 4. Dead Poets Society - Inspiring 5. 12 Angry Men - Having a law degree and loving film - it was a natural choice. Great watch. 6. Trainspotting - Everything I love about British film. 7. The Great Dictator - Love politically motivated film 8. Django Unchained - Favourite modern film by a country mile 9. Rebel Without a Cause - Love classic film, and James Dean. 10. Toy Story - Favourite childhood film
Guest Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Are you really saying these inspired your life? Surely not. How have they affected your life? Do you not have far more personal catalysts for inspiration than films like fight club?
FoxesAreBlue Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Influenced/affected my life is probably a bit strong but my top 10 faves in no particular order are... The Godfather Inglorious Basterds The Italian Job The Great Escape (original) Django Unchained The Green Mile Skyfall Senna Snatch Oceans 11 Plus two bonus points for TV series Band of Brothers Breaking Bad
David Guiza Posted 8 September 2014 Author Posted 8 September 2014 Not necessarily inspired. But, I'd go as far to say that Dead Poets Society and the Great Dictator did - yes. Just films that have had an impact on your life. Whether it be inspiration, enjoyment, childhood favourite etc. Are you really saying these inspired your life? Surely not. foxoffderby Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 1 The Godfather - the film I have watched more than any other. Brando at his best, I'll make him an offer he can't refuse 2 Star Wars - ground breaking special effects Listen to them, they're dying, Artoo! Curse my metal body! I wasn't fast enough! Its all my fault! 3 Trainspotting - gritty urban British film a top soundtrack also. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a ****ing big television, choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol, and DENTAL INSURANCE. Choose fixed interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisurewear and matching luggage. Choose a three-piece suit on hire purchase in a range of ****ing fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who the **** you are on Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit-crushing game shows, stuffing ****ing junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pissing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, ****ed up brats you spawned to replace yourselves. Choose your future. Choose life... 4 Goodfellas - iconic gangster yarn based on a true story, forget about it 5 12 Angry men - a story about about how prejudice affects judgement. What's the matter with you guys? You all know he's guilty! He's got to burn! You're letting him slip through our fingers! 6 The Shining - the scene when the young child is on his bike and the 2 dead girls appear in the corridor, I shat myself. Heeer's Johnny 7 The Wizard of Oz - as a kid growing up I watched a lot of black and white films, the scene when Dorothy enters Oz and we go into a world of colour amazing. Now I... I know we're not in Kansas! 8 Glengarry Glen Ross - virtually set in 1 room the entire film, the dialogue is sharp, witty and improvised. The leads are weak? ****ing leads are weak. You're weak. 9 Scarface - a story about an immigrant with nothing makes to the top in the world of drugs, In this country you gotta make the money first. When you make the money you get power. Then when you get the power, then you get the women. 10 Pulp Fiction - the dialogue in this Tarrantino film is unprecedented, the scene with Mr Big, Nah man Im pretty far from OK. Im going to go to work on the home's here with a pair of pliers and blow tourch !

Just films that have had an impact on your life. Whether it be inspiration, enjoyment, childhood favourite etc. Fair enough. Favourite ten films is understandable, but very few change your life. If the Godfather has changed so many people's lives I'd love to hear how.

Sometimes in life you have to sacrifice your own well being for the sake of the greater good. Betrayal by the people who you trust the most and the consequences of this A man who does not care for his family is not a real man - Vitto Corleone

If the Godfather has changed so many people's lives I'd love to hear how. I don't think that's entirely fair, I think movies and TV shows can have a noteworthy impact on your life, especially if watched as a child/teenager. I think watching movies/tv can have a impact on the way you behave in certain situations, your vocabulary and speech patterns. Sure it's not 'I watched this movie and now I'm going to break out of prison with a poster', but I still think it's fair to say that it has an impact on your life.

Rincewind Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 I have a few that are in others lists. I will give it some thought/ As for impact and inspiration yes it can have an effect I believe. Often their is a message which could change your way of thinking no correction enhance it. 12 angry men says if you believe something is wrong fight to put it right. Grapes of Wrath even in the worst of times a family is important. But of course those two and others are from books so the adaption are important and if done well can have the impact they intend. One of my favourites is one with John Mills(name escapes me) where he works in a shoe shop and is very mild to start with but by the end he refuses to be bossed by his wife which she is pleased about. That says go for your dreams.

Put a horse's head in someone's bed? Surely the film didn't make you realise how important family is - surely that was your mother/father/relatives long before you watched a gangster movie?
Captain... Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Of course films can inspire and affect you, in the same way books can or any form of art. Think of war films like Full Metal Jacket or the Hurt Locker, not necessarily my favourite films, but ones that put you in a situation that you will never find yourself in and give you a greater understanding of war. Another example being Flags of our fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima they are 2 films about the same battle but from different perspectives. Charlie Wilson's war is another one that I wouldn't call a great film, but it did have a profound impact on me. It is not just war and violence it helps you understand but also love and hate, hope and despair. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Garden State, Midnight in Paris all inspired me in some ways, but for more personal reasons due to where I was in my life. I can't think of 2 better examples of hatred than This is England and American History X. Then you have sci-fi, fantasy and Horror the Matrix had a profound impact on me, just on the possibilities of life and progress and what we are, and what we could be, 28 days later a beautiful example of the human condition and what we could become should our situation change and our humanity be stripped away. More than 10 there, and there are many others, as has already been mentioned Trainspotting, Fight Club, Star Wars, Clockwork Orange are all great films that can affect you in different ways.

I'm not saying that a movie hasn't had an impact on your life. How would I know? I'm trying to understand how it has and therfore why it has. I guess something like Gandhi could inspire someone to be a pacifist agitator. Maybe Dead poets society could influence you to become a teacher. That recent slave movie (sorry didn't watch it) or similar may incite you to take up a cause. But films like the Godfather (because it seems to be quoted a lot) I don't get it. I enjoyed the godfather movie but it didn't inspire me or affect me to become something I wasn't.
foxfanazer Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Goodfellas Django Shawshank Redemption Heat Lion King Training Day Snatch Lock stock and two smoking barrels Green mile Football Factory Black hawk down TV shows Breaking bad Son's of anarchy Prison break
Guest Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Family. didn't you have a family before? Didn't you understand family/Love? Is the underlying theme in the Godfather even really "family"?
Guest Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 The 40 year old virgin inspired me. The Graduate? I guess Michele Pfiefer and others used to affect me.

Again Fair enough. I don't find that war films inspire me at all and most films are simply entertainment for me. I guess I find inspiration on things from other sources and didn't realise that people's lives are changed by watching some hollywood actor ham up a part as much as they are. Each to their own, I've been enlightened if not inspired by this thread.

Each to their own, I've been enlightened if not inspired by this thread. With war films it isn't necessarily inspirational, but has an impact and gives me an appreciation for those that fight these wars and why and what they think they are fighting for. It is not the actor that inspires in most cases, but the story, and it is no different to being inspired by a song, a book, a sculpture or a play. You question people saying family for the Godfather, but it is not about realising you have a family, but about appreciating what they are what they do and how far you would go to protect them, or even if you would. It can make you question your own family or find a new appreciation for the importance of family and make you reconsider your views of yourself and your own family.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 Thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy, I am now a gun-totting raccoon.
foxoffderby Posted 8 September 2014 Posted 8 September 2014 So what did you do after watching it? Put a horse's head in someone's bed? Surely the film didn't make you realise how important family is - surely that was your mother/father/relatives long before you watched a gangster movie? No I never put a horses head in anybody's bed. But that was because they didn't own a farm. Films are similar to music because they evoke emotions and memories from happiness to sadness laughter etc. Are you telling me you can't relate to a piece of music or a passage from a film and say I know exactly how that person feels ?

I can't even say I know exactly how my wife feels. Come to that I don't know exactly how I feel. Electrical pulses or something isn't it?
