Harry - LCFC Posted 26 October 2014 Posted 26 October 2014 Camp Bastion was handed over to the Afghan army today as we pulled out of the war. How do people assess the situation now? The Afghan security forces have been strengthened and the Taliban have been marginalised but can we be confident, particularly after the US pulls out, that they won't recuperate now that we've gone? The peace has clearly not gone well in Iraq and I'm worried that something similar, although perhaps less extreme, might happen in Afghanistan too. The war is estimated to have cost us around £40bn and of course the lives of 453 British soldiers.
Steven Posted 26 October 2014 Posted 26 October 2014 The war is estimated to have cost us around £40bn and of course the lives of 453 British soldiers. A complete waste of money and a sad loss of life. I hope all the politicians are proud of themselves.
Buce Posted 26 October 2014 Posted 26 October 2014 Good. We had no business being there in the first place.
bovril Posted 26 October 2014 Posted 26 October 2014 Iraq was a disaster but Afghanistan had some noble intentions, the Taliban were beyond awful and the country at least has a glimmer of hope now.
Guest Bilo Posted 26 October 2014 Posted 26 October 2014 Iraq was a disaster but Afghanistan had some noble intentions, the Taliban were beyond awful and the country at least has a glimmer of hope now. This is more or less how I feel. Afghanistan was a lot more difficult to avoid than Iraq ever was, and we can say that we've made life better for ordinary Afghans.
stevelcfc Posted 26 October 2014 Posted 26 October 2014 If you do a job you have to do it properly, once again we haven't and in all likelihood the Taliban or some other pro-Pakistani fundamentalist group will rise up and start taking over power vacuums again, just like ISIS are now. The countless mistakes made, especially considering how obvious some of them were. But Afghan is in a better place, not by much, but better nevertheless and hopefully the Afghan forces aren't as corrupt as we think they are. Ultimately though the entire region is corrupt to hell, and while that remains the case, I don't hold out much hope.
leicsmac Posted 27 October 2014 Posted 27 October 2014 What a sad waste of money and lives. Here's hoping though that the current excuse of a semblance for stability over there manages to remain and actually makes life better for anyone who isn't a fundamentalist Muslim male. That might, just might, mean it wasn't all for nothing.
Vossen Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 Taliban moving back in next week... Sixty million people live in the UK... Cost of war: fourty Billion...if that money was shared out we would all be better off. Can someone do the maths ???
Freesolo Posted 30 October 2014 Posted 30 October 2014 Imagine that money poured into the NHS think we would all be a bit better off
