howlinmadmurfdoc Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 It's like paying to see a massive band, or going to a working men's club to see someone sing covers. When women's football commands the same crowds and revenues as the men's game then the prize money should move closer. It's not bad to watch but as a spectacle it doesn't come close to the men's game.
Guest MattP Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 If they want equality then surely we only truly achieve that when everyone plays together anyway regardless of gender. Women should be grateful some of them can be professional due to the men's game and the wealth that creates that they can be subsidised from, we have professional women cricketers now who are nowhere near the standard of players I often play with and they get to do this for a living just because people turn up in droves to watch the mens team. About time the ATP completely broke off from the WTA when it comes to the majors, hold them at different times, make them create their own wealth and see them punished for their greed. It's embarrassing for all concerned when some bint picks up the same cheque as a bloke who has gone through a 5 hour 5 setter for about 500k after losing 6-1,6-0 to one of the Williams brothers in the tennis finals. Wanting to have your cake and eat it springs to mind.
davieG Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 Equal pay will come when sponsor's and tv companies are prepared to pump in equal amounts We keep being told sport is now a business so they need to realise that.
leicsmac Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 The entertainment industry is not like most other industries in that it's a far more volatile market. I'm all in favour of pay equality in pretty much every field apart from entertainment/sport as the difference in productivity, output and financial reward between men and women in general is pretty close to negligible in all of those fields, but here I really can't see a justification for it if it doesn't pay for itself and you don't have the customer numbers. If a female music/movie artist has the popularity and talent, she can (and does) command more money than her male peers without the need for legislation (apart from probably some minimum wage bands). The same principle should apply here, as this field is different from the average workplace and much more akin to music, film, literature etc. PS. You know Matt, I think the WTA is one of the few female-only sporting organisations that could actually survive without any kind of subsidy from the mens side. Womens tennis is more popular around the world than you might think, for a variety of reasons. I think that was the reason the equal pay thing got approval there in the first place. Golf might well be another, for the same reasons. In fact I think the WPGA is already totally financially independent? Oh, and stop channeling cranky old Russian tennis heads.
Guest MattP Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 Tennis could be self sufficient yes but I doubt they'd be earning the money they do now. If you watch the WTA events outside the far east they are very sparsely attended even upto the final. When you go to Wimbledon centre or 1 is full for mens matches and people drop out for some food and drink when the girls come in. Look at the difference in ticket sales for Queens compared to Eastbourne. On viagogo last year tickets for the women's only days of semi final and final were cheaper than buying for the first round of the tournament that involved Murray, Fed, Nadal etc
DennisNedry Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 The top comments on that article pretty much sum my views up tbf.
jimmeh Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 Its ridiculous. It will happen though the world's gone mad.

I think the WTA could be self-sufficient, as both of us said, and it might be interesting to see what would happen if it did. The Asian market is still pretty hungry for womens tennis and golf and they have the money to throw around.
Bert Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 Equal pay - Play the same amount as the men do then.
Finnegan Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 Well that's dumb. When women's football generates the revenue men's football does then okay?
GingerrrFox Posted 28 October 2014 Posted 28 October 2014 The day Manchester City V Arsenal in the ladies game is selling +40,000 tickets then fair enough. Till then, feminist's need to pipe down.
Dan Posted 3 November 2014 Posted 3 November 2014 Oh look, more people who think that to make things 'equal' you give someone an advantage (which is ironically the absolute opposite of equal). Amazing how many can't get their head around that.
Stadt Posted 3 November 2014 Posted 3 November 2014 Surely conference footballers should earn the same as premiership footballers based on this daft logic?
Guest ttfn Posted 3 November 2014 Posted 3 November 2014 Surely conference footballers should earn the same as premiership footballers based on this daft logic? And people in veterans leagues. Don't forget the veterans. Actually it's about time my under 10s started earning £200k a week, some of them are running short on match attax
LCFC Rennie Posted 3 November 2014 Posted 3 November 2014 Must be frustrating as a feminist. Do they genuinely believe in their own views? Bonkers.
Leeds Fox Posted 4 November 2014 Posted 4 November 2014 I think some people are failing to see that the thread is about prize money rather than wages. I do completely disagree with making it equal though!
David Guiza Posted 4 November 2014 Posted 4 November 2014 Must be frustrating as a feminist. Do they genuinely believe in their own views? Bonkers. Whether or not you agree with this point (I don't personally), that is a ridiculous statement. In other walks of life; you get paid less for the same job as somebody else simply because you're a different gender to them - yes I do think they believe their own views. Feminists aren't all bra burning lesbians, you know? As for the point in hand, as has been said, until female sports generate the same revenue that males do it's a moot point. Sport is a business in the modern age, morals don't come into it.
