The recent omission of Mahrez is something that is extremely hard to understand. Clearly our most creative player and it's incredible he's being overlooked.

yeah - get Mahrez in...... and feed mahrez and vardy....

But... which is the most likely - Marhrez back in the starting 11 or Nugent?

Nugent definitely as he the best forward we have as proved in the last couple of seasons

Spot on for me we have never really replace Lloyd

It's not necessarily Lloyd though. He would be useful now and did pose problems whenever we played a Premier League team. However, he doesn't even regularly start for Watford and I don't think he is the answer. It's always funny how those not involved now become the flavour of the month. Personally don't think he has the quality for this league.

Yet, whenever I'm picking my own lineup for the game I am constantly struggling to put two good wingers out. That's the difference. Last year it was Dyer and Knockaert, Dyer and Mahrez, Knockaert and Mahrez etc...

This year Albrighton and Knockaert have barely had a sniff, Schlupp is not a winger and Mahrez is seemingly being castigated for something he's done at the moment. Nige even said we weren't in a position to play wingers right now, so he clearly doesn't rate Albrighton and, for some obscure reason, is using Mahrez and Knocky to make an example of something. Although, I'm not entirely sure what that "thing" could be.

It is really hard to understand what's going on with the wingers. However, we need to start playing with them again as it was the main reason for everything that has been good and successful since Pearson took over. As I said, our balance was key. Dyer wouldn't necessarily be the answer but surely there are plenty of other left wingers or even wingers out there we could have got/could get to restore that balance, as clearly Nige doesn't like our current wingers!

The side feels so disjointed at the moment, I just want to see us revert to what used to be successful and see how that goes.

James, cambiasso, king, drinkwater are all better than knockaert and mahrez when we haven't got the ball. We did actually restrict Southampton to very few chances but in the end there was no out ball for us so it was just endless pressure from them.

I don't think we've quite found the right balance in midfield, I'd like to see a mahrez or knockaert allowed to play off the strikers but have the protection of the likes of cambiasso, James etc screening the defence. Worryingly Pearson reckons this is our best eleven so I've heard

Knockaert and mahrez are 2 young up and coming quality players or could be given the chance, knockaert played well last seaon yes with a few hiccups on the way but that maybe his youthfulness. At the moment hes playing well in the under 21's, dont you think that he may have alot more to prove as well as desire in the first team. Lets face it ...could it be any worse.. i dont think so. i was there on saturday unfortunately i had to sit in the home end with my brother whos a southampton fan, we may have lost the football but we certainatly won the singing... so welldone lads...i had warm hands all game coz i had to sit on them.. :(

Absolutely it was a better team back in those days, but then everyone knew what they were doing.

Everyone in this team knew what they were doing last season, but it's as though Pearson has gone about that team ethic, dismantling everything that was good about it, and enforcing something quite alien to everyone else but himself - now no one has a clue.

Why would you go about dismantling what made the team so successful last season, with this mentality of being more concerned about how to cancel out the opposition, rather than focus on our own game? It's absolutely shocking and if it continues, which I expect it will because the guy is so damn stubborn, even when it stares him full in the face as to how wrong it is, he still isn't looking to change it in any way at all. It will cost him eventually.

The manner of these defeats is appalling. Not looking in any way at all like a team who bossed it last season. Even the hard graft and closing down of players isn't in the team. That's inexcusable at any level against any opposition and I don't see how were going to get out of this, because even if the table suggests otherwise, we're in big trouble.

I strongly agree with this, but......

In the Championship, last season, we mainly played 4-4-2 with width (or 4-4-1-1, I'd argue, with Nugent shuttling between midfield and attack). Mahrez was a successful part of a successful formation. He has also looked one of the players best equipped to thrive in the Premier League.

Trying to understand NP's thinking, I wonder if he feels that we simply cannot succeed playing that formation (with only 2 central midfielders) at Premier League level? Very few teams do play like that. To do so successfully, you'd need 2 exceptionally strong, mobile, creative central midfielders.

So, could we play 3 central midfielders AND Mahrez? His big strength is going past defenders on his left to create opportunities. He has played mainly on the right, cutting in, but would it be feasible for him to alternate sides - sometimes cutting in from the right and sometimes going to the line and crossing from the left? This would allow us to use the potent but very different attacking potential of Ulloa AND Vardy....but would it leave the full-backs too exposed and midfield too stretched when defending?

Of course, he can play wide right in a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 formation. But we've tried that and it hasn't worked very well so far, as it negates part of our attacking - only 1 of Vardy and Ulloa can play centrally.

We need Mahrez on the pitch - but we need it to be in a formation that works. Suggestions?

I wasn't surprised after Swansea as not only was his passing execution awful like the rest of them, his pass selection was shocking as well. But he's one of the few to show glimpses of prem quality so to not even make the field when chasing a game is just bonkers.

Clearly Pearson currently thinks that the diamond is the better of two evils, I mean, I'm sure he's not blind to the fact we aren't creating. But if the better of the two evils will still get you relegated then I'd rather at least try and attack.
