StanSP Posted 9 December 2014 Posted 9 December 2014 I don't think they let White people in do they? Same with Fat Cats now, 3/4 white lads try to get in they get refused. 3/4 Asian lads try to get in, yeah no problem. They don't let anyone in now mate. It's closed.
Soar Fox Posted 9 December 2014 Posted 9 December 2014 They don't let anyone in now mate. It's closed. Fat cats? Hopefully Marz bar goes next.
StanSP Posted 9 December 2014 Posted 9 December 2014 Fat cats? Hopefully Marz bar goes next. Nah Chilli White's
Soar Fox Posted 9 December 2014 Posted 9 December 2014 Nah Chilli White's Ah yes I remember now it's Candystripe. They actually do 20% off food and drink for Leicester fans on the day of home games.
Guest MattP Posted 9 December 2014 Posted 9 December 2014 Chilli White's really wasn't a place to go for a white lad, I went in a few times as I knocked about with 4-5 Asian lads in my last job but got a 'what the fcuk are you doing in here?' comment from someone virtually every time. Then they had that huge scrap outside one night which seemed to revolve around whites and asian and after that I was just turned away even in 'Asian' company. Was a shame actually as the first few weeks it was open it actually had a bit of a fashionable middle class vibe about it, like Fat Cats but actually busy.
teblin Posted 10 December 2014 Posted 10 December 2014 Well, about 95-99 it was about a few places, usually Fan club or Alcatraz club wise, and just about any pub or bar that was open. 2 places I spent a lot of time in!
Samilktray Posted 10 December 2014 Posted 10 December 2014 I went in Chilli Whites a few times and never had any problems based on my skin colour
Mark 'expert' Lawrenson Posted 10 December 2014 Posted 10 December 2014 Mid 1980's I spent a lot of time in Super Bowl having more often than not been turned away from Studio on the way down, Harvey's was a massive favourite of mine a few years later and then in my more mature years I would go to Simpkins. Also liked The Jug n Jive back in the day! Never keen on Krystals, I was turned away from there once by an oaf of a bouncer who informed me I looked like a bag of shite I had my best gear on as well. Avoided Legends, hated Brannigans, and Jokers was a little too far to walk, especially at the risk of a knock back as it was the opposite end of town from where I lived. I have great memories of pubs and clubs from the mid 1980's onwards and feel lucky to have been around Leicester then, the town centre was always packed on a Friday and Saturday night, unlike nowadays. I must mention a couple of my favourite pubs, The Wellington (which is sadly now a Tesco Express) and Van Catraz ( sorry if it's spelt wrong) Happy memories.
Buce Posted 10 December 2014 Posted 10 December 2014 I used to be DJ at Granny's Wasn't there another next door for younger kids? Aunties?
ElusiveEd Posted 10 December 2014 Posted 10 December 2014 What was that place near the market, pretty much next door to the American Express shop? Chris Pyatt used to work the door. You'd go in and straight downstairs, a bar at both ends and a dance floor in the middle. Fridays, a pint of "Lager" was 35p Also remember, The Birdcage, Fan Club, Mr Keisas (I saw Shalamar, Showadywady and TISWAS there in the 80's) Vaguely remember a club called Baileys co's my older sis used to go and think it was my first experience of a club Bars- Pegottys, Pinch Of Snuff, The Wellington, The Globe, Winstons, Carousel, Bohemian, Corn Exchange (Bier Keller). My fave place was the Snooty Fox. Can't rem names of - The club next to Mr Keisas on the other side of the Haymarket entrance? The bar down Belgrave gate, a few doors from the old cinema? My dad owned a pub on the outskirts of the city centre from the 60's till mid/late 80's in which I was brought up. Easy to walk into town and back home every Fri and Sat night with a kebab from that place next to the Palais. The best Kebabs in town. Feeling old now but were probably the best days and the ones I miss the most.

ElusiveEd Posted 10 December 2014 Posted 10 December 2014 In the Early 80s it was the Horsefair, I think. That's the place. Jeez, the memories I have of there. :xmasohmy: Cheers Webbo. What became of Chris Pyatt? I vaguely rem him opening a gym a few years back but you just don't hear his name much these days. He had a bro called Raymond Pyatt who I knew better thro my bro but they were chalk and cheese. Ramzy Khachik used to run the doors and door-staff in the 80's. He was in the news again recently as being outed as a gangster whilst being the personal trainer of One Direction band members... http://www.unrealitytv.co.uk/x-factor/one-direction-liam-paynes-fitness-trainer-ramzy-khachik-exposed-as-former-gangland-drug-dealer/
Guest MattP Posted 10 December 2014 Posted 10 December 2014 That bar near the market was Manilla in the late 90's early 00's, Pyatt did the door there, great bloke. Still speak to him whenever I see him at the boxing, trains a lad called Joe something now among others who is a pretty good unbeaten prospect. I would love to have been old enough to experience the Granby Hall boxing days in Leicester.
Bert Posted 10 December 2014 Posted 10 December 2014 Goose > Varsity > Parody > Voodoo > Yates > Nightclub. Either Creation or Zanzibar. That was the usual route for us. Always went Varsity and Parody because it was 2-4-1. Goose because you could get in there no matter what. Voodoo had some decent R'n'B and was next to Parody as well as a free fishbowl because my cousin knew the girl that worked behind the bar. Yates was the last stop as it was always quite lively and we walked that way to get the "zanzibus" . People might laugh or whatever but we all had some great nights out especially Friday's when the clubs were doing drinks for no more than £2. This was 2004-2008 time. First got into creation when I was 15 on a May bank holiday 2002. Occasionally went into Lloyds or Terrace when we could get in there but they didn't like big groups of lads in there. Didn't care what club I ended up in as long as it wasn't life. Birds full of themselves and you had to be in the clique.

I would love to have been old enough to experience the Granby Hall boxing days in Leicester. Funny you should mention the Granby Halls boxing MattP. My best mate thro all those days was the promoter of a lot of those shows called Jonny Griffin. Think he's still alive but gotta be retired now. If I remember right, a guy called Carl Gunn used to work behind the bar at The Wellington and also promote boxing shows, manage boxers and is now a well respected boxing gym owner. They had some great fight nights at the Granby halls and also the Grand Hotel.
ElusiveEd Posted 10 December 2014 Posted 10 December 2014 Did you mean the Bear Cage? Don't think so although there was a club called Bear Cage I remember. If I rem right there was a club on Lee Circle, under the car park which in the 1990's early 00's was called Forbidden. I'm sure it was called The Birdcage for a while in the 80's. I do stand to be corrected but I'm 80-90% sure.
ElusiveEd Posted 10 December 2014 Posted 10 December 2014 Wasn't Carl Gunn Sibbo's trainer? Maybe manager? I rem when Sibbo fought Marvin Hagler. The only way anyone could see it live in Leicester was at the Odeon Cinema (Now Athena). They were relaying it live from the US about 2am. It was rammed but of course he lost and went back to being a builder. Is he still around/working anybody know?
Tommeh Posted 10 December 2014 Posted 10 December 2014 Not going back as far as some here but the Loaded Dog - Time (Now Parcel Yard) - Walkabout - Yates - Life route around 08/09 was fantastic. Never forget meeting Bert and Loveday in Liquid one Saturday night, changed the dancing rules forever that night.

I spoke to him a few of Concepcion's fights and always had time for him, sold a load of his gear as well a few years back just to keep his gym open. I would loved to have been around in the 70's and 80's - Saturday's would be incredible going from the footy with 20k at Filbo to 15k in Granby Halls for World Title fights.

Webbo Posted 10 December 2014 Posted 10 December 2014 Really? I was told his was skint. Fair play if he's ok. I know he's got a holiday home in Italy. I'm only really acquainted with him, couldn't claim to know him well.

Sorry, Got to qualify what I meant. Johnny Griffin's SON, Kev, was my best mate, not his dad. . I ain't that old. Yeah, they were great days and you described em just how I rem em. A good few pubs on a Sat lunchtime, Filbert Street for the games, a few more beers, home, get showered and changed then back into town to all the above mentioned bars and clubs or to Granby Halls if and when the boxing was on. Happy Times
