chrishlcfc Posted 18 December 2014 Posted 18 December 2014 I've just got a tax rebate cheque from the inland revenue for £274.40 which I'm delighted about, but i'm worried as i'm on a zero hours contract and when I've been off for a week or two which I am sometimes I have been getting small amounts of tax repaid to me on a weekly basis, on my latest payslip it says that the tax paid to date now stands at zero as I have received all the tax back that I have paid but as I stated I have received a cheque for the above sum, should I just go and cash it in, I'm worried that I could have to pay this back next year when I may be struggling for work. what do people reckon I should do contact the inland revenue or just cash it in?
pSinatra Posted 18 December 2014 Posted 18 December 2014 One week before Christmas you're asking if you should cash a cheque for nearly £300? Cash it & have a very merry christmas
VLC86 Posted 18 December 2014 Posted 18 December 2014 Well I got a letter saying I owed them a similar amount so call it an early Christmas present.
SystonFox Posted 18 December 2014 Posted 18 December 2014 I once got a tax rebate for near on 3k. Contacted the agency who I was employed with and the staff there said it was mine and I was free to spend it. Obviously I spuffed the lot. 6 months later HMRC start chasing me for their money back. I got into a disputed with them and won. All because I had an email from the agency saying I was free to spend it. So really, get it in writing you can spend it and then do exactly that

The letter you received from HMRC should state what tax year it relates to. Should it be 2013/14, bank it and spend it.
chrishlcfc Posted 18 December 2014 Author Posted 18 December 2014 Thanks for all the replies looks like i'll just cash in and spend, happy days .
