cityfanlee23 Posted 11 February 2015 Posted 11 February 2015 Having seen our keepers compared on squawka, I thought I'd take some time to compare our midfield players to try and work out who is the most consistent, to finally shed some light on the debate. http://www.squawka.com/comparison-matrix I've picked out the stats I think are relevant to their roles as all round players. Obviously different roles require different stats, so this wont "settle" any sort of debate but there are some interesting ones here Results: Total forward passes James - 25 Drinkwater - 34 (settles that debate then eh) Cambiasso - 28 Hammond - 30 King - 22 Total backward passes James - 24 Drinkwater - 22 Cambiasso - 12 Hammond - 17 King - 16 Total passes James - 37 Drinkwater - 57 Cambiasso - 40 Hammond - 47 King - 39 Successful passes James - 31 Drinkwater - 46 Cambiasso - 30 Hammond - 38 King - 33 Pass completion James - 83% Drinkwater - 81% Cambiasso - 76% Hammond - 82% King - 85% Key passes James - 1.65 Drinkwater - 0.68 Cambiasso - 1.26 Hammond - 0.48 King - 0.28 Assists - Pathetic James - 0 Drinkwater - 0 Cambiasso - 0 Hammond - 0 King - 0 Total shots - James - 1.43 Drinkwater - 1.06 Cambiasso - 0.98 Hammond - 0.48 King - 0.95 Shot accuracy - Disgraceful James - 36% Drinkwater - 27% Cambiasso - 33% Hammond - 0% (True???) King - 43% Tackles Lost (this one is interesting) (per 90m) James - 1.28 Drinkwater - 2.65 Cambiasso - 3.01 Hammond - 4.57! King - 2.36 Tackles won (This means won and come away with posession) James - 1.80 Drinkwater - 2.27 Cambiasso - 1.54 Hammond - 1.93 King - 2.36 Ariel duels won James - 1.35 Drinkwater - 1.06 Cambiasso - 1.68 Hammond - 2.29 King - 2.08 Interceptions James - 2.10 Drinkwater - 2.42 Cambiasso - 2.80 Hammond - 2.53 King -1.32 Blocks - Wes does all that James - 0.23 Drinkwater - 0.30 Cambiasso - 0.28 Hammond - 0.48 King - 0.28 Wes gets 1.58 out of interest Clearances James 2.03 Drinkwater 1.97 Cambiasso 1.26 King - 1.42 Hammond - 2.41 Total - James - 3 Drinkwater - 4 Cambiasso - 1 Hammond - 3 King - 3 Conclusion - They all statistically have strengths and weaknesses, and each individual takes up a different role, so these statistics don't reflect a true result of who is the better player, but atleast we can resolve the on going debates about Danny Drinkwater never passing forward etc. All I can see is that comparing our midfielders to those around us and around the league, that's our main weakness (which some already worked out) - However none really stand out, they are all simply as bad as each other, and compared to last season have been shadows of themselves, let's hope they can sort it out. As far as a total score goes, Matty james is statistically our best midfielder, however alot of the stats were nothing stats really like average pass length, when we've already established our passes are not "Key Passes" and never really create anything from midfield, it's almost irrelevant, especially when there is about 1-2m between them all. We need to improve in this area drastically, especially with the games coming up!
Stevosevic Posted 11 February 2015 Posted 11 February 2015 Assists - Pathetic James - 0 Drinkwater - 0 Cambiasso - 0 Hammond - 0 King - 0 Absolutely disgusting.
Jimothy Posted 11 February 2015 Posted 11 February 2015 So first three sets of stat state that Drinkwater has passed the ball forwards 34 times, backward 34 times, but has only made 57 passes in total. Hmmmm.
Corky Posted 11 February 2015 Posted 11 February 2015 So first three sets of stat state that Drinkwater has passed the ball forwards 34 times, backward 34 times, but has only made 57 passes in total. Hmmmm. None of the total passes match up with the backward and forward passes for every player.
TOMBlcfc Posted 11 February 2015 Posted 11 February 2015 Can only remember one time this season where hammond took a shot, yes it went wide. That's not his game though as shown by his impressive defensive stats. The assists thing is completely ridiculous how on earth have they managed it!

Hmmmm. None of the total passes match up with the backward and forward passes for every player. There are other stats on there to choose from, most of which add up the rest of the passes but are almost irrelevant really for example Key passes although are generally a "forward pass" have been made seperate from the forward or backward passing stats
ScouseFox Posted 11 February 2015 Posted 11 February 2015 #cambiassoout So first three sets of stat state that Drinkwater has passed the ball forwards 34 times, backward 34 times, but has only made 57 passes in total.Hmmmm. come on man you never heard of a drinky special called the sideways pass
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 11 February 2015 Posted 11 February 2015 Danny was immense last season and I still hope he comes good for us, but no amount of stats you put in front of me will convince me that what my eyes see are wrong. This season he has been absolutely shit in all areas.
kingfox Posted 11 February 2015 Posted 11 February 2015 Drinkwater has still been shit, regardless those stats.
cityfanlee23 Posted 11 February 2015 Author Posted 11 February 2015 Col will have a field day with cambiasso, Hopefully he turned a corner last match where he was awesome though
Guest kristianity77 Posted 11 February 2015 Posted 11 February 2015 Assists - Pathetic James - 0 Drinkwater - 0 Cambiasso - 0 Hammond - 0 King - 0 And there in lies the problem we've got. Our midfield may as well not be there in an attacking sense. No wonder our strikers get absolutely fook all service. We surely must be the only team in the football league with that stat!
Itsthejoeker Posted 11 February 2015 Posted 11 February 2015 Interceptions James - 2.10 Drinkwater - 2.42 Cambiasso - 2.80 Hammond - 2.53 King -1.32 If Cambiasso has more, why did you highlight Hammond?
cityfanlee23 Posted 11 February 2015 Author Posted 11 February 2015 Interceptions James - 2.10 Drinkwater - 2.42 Cambiasso - 2.80 Hammond - 2.53 King -1.32 If Cambiasso has more, why did you highlight Hammond? Edited cheers for the spot
Guest Posted 11 February 2015 Posted 11 February 2015 Am I going completely mad or was Andy King not a pretty attack minded midfielder once upon a time? Now I struggle to work out what role he fulfills.
Itsthejoeker Posted 11 February 2015 Posted 11 February 2015 Would be interesting to see how many midfielders "played a part" in the build up to a goal. I'd also stick goals scored on that analysis
cityfanlee23 Posted 12 February 2015 Author Posted 12 February 2015 Assists - Pathetic James - 0 Drinkwater - 0 Cambiasso - 0 Hammond - 0 King - 0 And there in lies the problem we've got. We surely must be the only team in the football league with that stat! the total shots stat is just as bad, over 90 minutes only 2 of our 5 midfielders attempt a shot atleast every 90 minutes Then the highest accuracy of that 1 shot every game is below half... our 2 best midfielders playing, we still don't even average 1 shot on target per match. absolutely pathetic really, where the hell has it gone wrong?
cityfanlee23 Posted 12 February 2015 Author Posted 12 February 2015 Am I going completely mad or was Andy King not a pretty attack minded midfielder once upon a time? ScouseFox Posted 12 February 2015 Posted 12 February 2015 just to throw it out there, between the 3 cms who regularly play for villa and burnley (the other two teams in the relegation zone) there is one assist all season in each side (westwood for villa, arfield for burnley).
Guest Posted 12 February 2015 Posted 12 February 2015 9 goals in league 1 9 goals following season 15 goals 2010-11 and then he got injured and has been crock ever since! Remarkable numbers. His game certainly seems to be much more negative these days - would love to know why.

They cant push up as far as they did last season though for numerous reasons - 1. Premier league obviously, 2. playing a 2 man midfield in this league for most games is madness and means they have to sit deep especially after bringing in 3. Ulloa, hasn't helped as he doesn't defend from the front as effectively as Vardy did last season, that lack of mobility has stifled us in many games. Due to all this we rely on the wingers.

As shocking as the 0 assists thing all the above makes sense. Add that to the fact the way Pearson plays CMs means they aren't really the ones to create the chances - our wingers are. I'm disappointed with the dearth of assists coming from CM but I wasn't expecting loads anyway. Pearson uses the CMs as box to box and the wingers are the main creators.
lgfualol Posted 12 February 2015 Posted 12 February 2015 Ouch those assist stats. Surprised Cambi hasnt picked one out yet. We have had Vardy up top for most of the season so that could be why.
Rileigh84 Posted 12 February 2015 Posted 12 February 2015 I'm surprised at Cambiasso. For me he's a class apart in our midfield, but then he does play some exquisite balls that some of our players don't read etc. The difference between playing with world class players then coming here.As for King, he's hardly had a run in the side since Pearson's 1st stint in charge when he was scoring 9+ goals a season so I think he's had to change his game to adapt to new tactics. He's had a few good games this season, most notably at Chelsea - but his all round game isn't good enough to play week in week out. Still, if anyone is going to score from center midfield it'd be him - James like a crack every now and again but they seem to go either wide or straight at the keeper everytime.I think Drinkwater is suffering a crisis of confidence. He looked great first game of the season against Everton until he had to come off and since then he's really not done a lot. A player with bags of quality, I think he'll come good in the end. We need a winning run to build confidence and I think we'll start seeing players come in to their own again. Nothing has gone our way this season though, as many have said - there's no way in hell we're the worst team in this league.
Pearson Nigel Posted 12 February 2015 Posted 12 February 2015 CAMBIASSO Pass completion not great reason...........he sprays 50 yard balls and put them on people's toes like threading a piece of cotton through the eye of a needle Other Stat Missed.......scored twice .... No one else close! Cambiasso & James for me in Centre surrounded by knockers and Mahez........wing backs Simpson & as Schulp .........
