2nd most fouls in the league - What does it mean?

Exactly as the title says. Just seen the tweet above from Sky and thought it was interesting reading.

I know a lot of people have been saying we aren't as good as other teams at seeing out/managing games with little fouls, time wasting etc...

However, one of our problems this season for me has been the naivety in giving away free kicks in good areas when the opposition are strong from set pieces and, as we all know, we aren't skilled in defending them.

Do you think the number of fouls is down to teams being savvy against us? Are we naive in our approach? Or are we simply not good enough and, therefore, end up fouling more because of this gap in quality?

The other names on that list would suggest that the latter option perhaps doesn't fit...

Probably a combination of not having much possession (probably why Palace are top of that list) and playing a fairly high pressure defensive game (see also Spurs, Soton).

Of course 300 of those fouls are by Ulloa.

It means we have committed the second most fouls in the league

shame that fouls do not  = points

if we stop fouling will we race up the league?

Combined with league position it says to me we make too many fouls in the wrong areas as a result of being second to the ball and needingn to make rash challenges. If we were mid table you might expect a lot of the fouls to be in the middle of the park to stop the flow. Which would be tactically astute for a team as poor as us in defence. But we are not tactically astute

We give so many free kicks away because we are always under pressure we don't have enough possession. We are always trying to win the ball back the possession stats will probably back this up.

Ulloa gives most of them away, and then does his usual complaining to the ref saying its not a foul when it clearly is.

one of these days the ref will listen and reverse his decision.

Our LB / RB and midfielders are utterly useless when it comes to forcing opposing players away without giving away a free kick.

Constantly putting the team in danger. I think I saw Andy King make about three of these fouls in a 5 minute period a few games ago, all on the edge of the box  - ANDY KING!!

Without a doubt, set-pieces for and against are killing us every other week.

About second bottom from scoring from pieces

second top at giving away fouls

and second for conceding goals in last 10 minutes.

The opposites would probably see us out of the zone.
