Steve Claridge

Steve Claridge scored two of the greatest goals in the history of Leicester City during his two years at the club. In May 1996 City found themselves beneath the twin towers of Wembley for a Division One play-off final against Crystal Palace. With the game heading towards a penalty shoot-out Claridge hit an unstoppable volley from the edge of the box in the 119th minute to fire City back into the Premier League.

Claridge will also always be remembered as the player who scored the winning goal as City swept to Coca-Cola Cup glory at Hillsbrough in April 1997. He again struck in extra-time, converting a close-range effort, to bring the cup back to Filbert Street.

Claridge was signed from Birmingham City for £1.2 million on March 1 1996 and made 79 first team appearances during which he scored 21 goals before moving on to Wolverhampton Wanderers on March 26 1998 for £400,000. If Claridge had scored just those two goals, City fans would have considered him a bargain buy.

The best goal I've ever seen. I know it was a mis hit and he shinned it but from the stands at Wembley it looked like a sweetly struck volley and sent us all into fits of ecstacy. Legend - possibly my favourite plavour of all time for his effort, his character and his important goals.

He said after the game he thjought he'd shinned it, but I am not sure he did. Can anyone say for certain?

I remember turning to my brother and explaining why Spider Kalac had just come on for the penalties, then suddenly I was saying saying "****ing hell - we're in the prem" and the rest is history.

Sheer class.

the slow motion goal 1996 wembley makes him a legend forever. the hillsborough winner is just a bonus. being there when he shinned it in on 119 mins with nigel martyn stranded is possibly the sweetest goal i have ever experienced.

on youtube in leicesters best goals its on there, albeit 2 seconds long. what a goal.

From the aforementioned Tales From the Boot Camps:

"Later I think I said something daft to Gary Newbon on television about having shinned it (I wanted to get the interview over with and join in the celebrations) but actually I caught the ball perfectly, hit it as sweet as a nut. It just sat up and winked at me and I hit it. I knew instantly it was going to sail into Nigel Martyn's left corner."

;)

TFTBC is a great read and pretty well-written considering Claridge's admitted lack of book smarts.

I've never been much for appearances and Steve Claridge is just my sort of footballer - he's almost accidentally brilliant. His goal against Palace was the footballing moment of my lifetime and I've always been a fan of his. He's so human and a guy you'd always have wanted in your team. If he ever reads this, thanks Steve.

His reaction to all the Leicester fans at Luton on the opening day just further cemented his place as a legend in my books! He nearly fell out of the box in leaning over to wave at all the fans! :D

"And that could be.... :o

the winner from Claridge.... :w00t:

IT IS!!!!!!!!!!!! :yahoo: "

Stevie Claridge has given Leicester .... a place..... in the premiership.

Still get a tingle down my spine when I hear that commentary! Almost as good as "Some people are on the pitch, they think its all over..... It is now!"

He seems to have a lot of recognisable friends

I'll always remember one of the 1st things I ever said at a footie match and it was "Daddy why doesn't that guy wear shinpads like the others!" obviously I was describing super Steve!!
