MrSpaM Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 Leicester City's new Thai owners will raise the bar during the January transfer window as they chase promotion, says boss Sven-Goran Eriksson. The City boss will meet with Aiyawatt and Vichai Raksriaksorn ahead of tonight's Carling Cup clash at home to West Brom (7.45). They will discuss how to fulfil the owners' ambition of promotion to the Premier League this season. Eriksson said the Raksriaksorns, who lead the Asia Football Investments consortium which has bought the club from Milan Mandaric, will put up the cash for him to strengthen the squad with some high-profile signings. He laughed-off national newspaper reports linking him with a loan move for former England captain David Beckham, but he admitted the club will now raise their sights at potential transfer targets. "I think this club had ambitions but, since the new owners came in, the target changed and the ambition changed," said Eriksson. "If we want to try to fulfil that target we need some new blood and some fresh players. That is why we have done what we have done. "We haven't spoken about names, it is too early, but we want to play in the Premier League as quick as possible and that is next year. "If that is possible or not, I don't know. I know they are prepared in January to do what they have to do, and that is good. "They love football. I am in contact with them every day and they are coming against West Brom, and hopefully I will have a long meeting with them. "We went to Thailand and you have a better idea of where they are when you meet them and see what they have. "Knowing them, they want to be successful, and they have been extremely successful in their business. "They have not bought Leicester to play with, they bought it because they want to be successful. "I guess they studied, not only Leicester but other clubs, before they decided which club to buy. They did so because they want to play in the Premier League." Eriksson said he could call Beckham whenever he liked but had not done so because he already knew what the answer would be if he asked him to play in the Championship. "There is nothing in that story," he said. "If David wants to come here and play football, yes, he is more than welcome, but I doubt that he wants to play in the Championship. "I have not spoken to him but I can easily do that, but I know the answer before. No, I am not trying to bring him in. That story should be killed because it won't happen."
davieG Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 And.... Leicester City's players must remain on their toes to stay in manager Sven-Goran Eriksson's plans, goalkeeperChris Weale has warned his team-mates.Eriksson has already signalled his intention to make big changes as he bids to kick-start City's season by signingDarius Vassell and bringing in Curtis Davies, Kyle Naughton and Greg Cunningham on loan. Despite Cunningham having never played a league game for Manchester City, the 19-year-old Irishman was preferred to City stalwart Bruno Berner at Swansea on Saturday, and Weale said no one could take their place in Eriksson's side for granted. Eriksson has stated he is looking to make more loan additions, and has warned that January could be a very busy month as he spends some of the cash promised by the club's Thai owners. "We have to be on our toes as the manager has such good contacts," said Weale. "There will be even more competition for places, which you have to expect when the quality of players has improved. "It is great to have a manager who has managed fantastic clubs and fantastic players and, no matter who comes in, I love playing for Leicester City. "It is fantastic for me. He has managed some of the world's best players and it is such an opportunity to learn from him and I feel privileged to be in this position." City's revival under Eriksson stalled on Saturday at the Liberty Stadium as they were beaten 2-0 by Swansea. But they have the opportunity to bounce back immediately tonight when they entertain Premier League surprise package West Bromwich Albion in the Carling Cup at The Walkers Stadium. Weale says he is relishing the challenge. "We are looking forward to the game," he said. "It is a great challenge for us against a team who are doing very well in the Premier League, but the club has a good pedigree in the competition."
Sylvie85 Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 Good to hear the players views, completely different from under sousa!
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 It's one thing to have the money for players of Premiership standard, but it's quite another thing to pursuade them to take a step down to the Championship. We will only be able to get out of favour players in January, and there will be reasons attached as to why they are out of favour. Not putting down our ambition, it's good to hear. Just making sure people keep their feet on the ground before the wild speculations hit the thread. I say making sure, of course, my post will in no way mitigate this.

You word it better than most
cc_star Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 The only players available in January are out of favour players given Sven loan signings so far I think he'll overhaul the squad, he showed that by signing a player where we already had ample quality, we could end up with 40odd players (like out relegation season) as we have some shit that no one would want and the players themselves may not be willing to step down a division or two to find a team. We need either Vassel to take some of the chances we're so good at creating or a new forward, We need a quality defensive midfielder so our fragile defence isn't so exposed, but I don't believe we should be signing every player who's ever driven past a Premier League football stadium Most importantly the squad needs spirit and you don't have spirit by being bloated and signing premier league cast-offs, fair enough hungry U-21's on loan but cast-offs and journeymen are not the basis of a team I think Sven will be great for us, but on the flipside I also see striking similarities to Holloway's season

Can see where your coming from, but nobody got promoted using a bunch of league 2 wonder players either. The squad needs improving, and getting premiership players who are out of favour is our best, and pretty much our only option imo
Les-TA-Jon Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 I totally agree with cc_star ok we need additions to the squad - but a massive overhaul is not needed. What do we need? A clinical striker plus maybe 2 or 3 more players. less is more methinks
AaronH Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 January is going to be a very intresting time, bur instea of coming out with thid he needs to gget the players we already have performing else come january we don't want to be in the bottom 3 if we are going to be promoted.
StanSP Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 If we're gonna get 'big name' players, I wouldn't be surprised if some of our 'big name' players went the other way out the door (Fryatt being the main one I think, not that I'd want that to happen).
Liamlcfc1 Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 i cant give a name away but one of them mabe An Italian Winger/Striker who plays for Roma and is 34
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 i cant give a name away but one of them mabe An Italian Winger/Striker who plays for Roma and is 34 Well the only 34 year old Italian forward currently playing for Roma is Totti, who is also their captain. Ain't gonna happen.
Jon the Hat Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 Well the only 34 year old Italian forward currently playing for Roma is Totti, who is also their captain. Ain't gonna happen. How can you write this off so quickly! It is either him or Beckham!!
Jon the Hat Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 Hang on! They don.t mean big name players, they mean players with BIG NAMES! Or course! Look out for signings from Icelandsssson.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 Hang on! They don.t mean big name players, they mean players with BIG NAMES! Or course! Look out for signings from Icelandsssson. Or indeed, Thailand!
Yokofoxes Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 We need a quality defensive midfielder so our fragile defence isn't so exposed, We have Abe sat on the bench or playing out of position on the right when he is a natural defender/defensive midfielder.
Narborough_fox Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 Big name signing like... Nathaniel Mendez-Laing Jan Vennagor of Hesslink Morten Gamst-Pedersen And of course... Shaun Wright-Phillips (Already rumoured )
lcfcsnow Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 Whilst changes have to be made, we're going about this the wrong way and I'm concerned for us until the window opens now. Our current league position isn't good, and the current underperforming players now know their future is uncertain. We have one threat from midfield, and a Japanese guy that seems to have to play out of position and no strikers able to score. If we're not in the relegation zone come 1st January it will be a huge acheivement!
Foxestalc Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 Abdisalam Abdulkadir Ibrahim This fella could fit both categories of a "big name" signing. On the books at Man City and well thought of. Sven may well have signed him. Grew up in Mogadishu, so should feel right at home in parts of Leicester too!
s11nny Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 who i wanna see out in jan (dnt hate me, just my opinion ) : Lamey - useless, but new signing so doubt this will happen Fryatt - fan fav, but lets be realistic...he is on poor form since his injury last season and i dnt see him getting any better. he can only play on confidence, and im sure we can get hold of some who can finish better than him. A Central Midfielder (not king) - we have too many i think N'Guessan - not consistent enough for me Gallagher - Not consistent enough for me IN: A striker that will take most chances with reasonable height, power, speed Right Mid/ Winger - who can take corners, free kicks, cross the ball etc..
Narborough_fox Posted 26 October 2010 Posted 26 October 2010 Right Mid/ Winger - who can take corners, free kicks, cross the ball etc.. Becks
