Question to a dead relative/friend. Ask it here.
bovril replied to Free Falling Foxes's topic in General Chat
My Grandfather was a desert rat in WWII. He was captured and spent time in a POW camp in Italy. He escaped and lived for some time with a partisan family near Sarnano in Le Marche. He died when I was about 15. I would love to ask him about it. Everything. I have so many questions now. But looking back I get the feeling that he didn't want to talk about it. In return he could ask me about Leicester finally winning the FA Cup. -
All of those have clearly spent a lot of time on and been shaped by social media where that type of aggressive whataboutism rules, so maybe this isn't a deliberate tactic but just the direction that politics and society is inevitably going in.

America as the first country to trial government by 4 chan board.

Legal system closer to the US surely. I think culturally we're closer to other Anglo countries than e.g. France or Italy, because of language, but economically and politically we are very clearly European.

Like I'm glad the penny is dropping now in England it's just a bit disappointing it's taken 405 years.

Had a good night with that, some female Swedish students and a game of twister in 2006.

Social media means that ideas can germinate and spread much faster than before

It was the result of things that had been building for a while. As I was living in Bulgaria I was very aware of the insane panic over Bulgarians and Romanians from 2013 onwards that led to Brexit, and the anti-liberal backlash was growing in America too I am sure. Most surprising thing about 2016 for me was that people were surprised.

Yes, couple of times. Nice town. Don't think the beaches nearby are that great, but that's true for most of Croatia. Some really beautiful islands north of there but more easily accessible from Fiume. I like Split much more, more to do and better atmosphere.

Blew it with the years at the end. I think the point is that the world is a lot messier now, particularly because it's so interconnected, and so things like nationalism or strong leaders who are above the law start to appeal more. I've posted this before but I don't think Brits resisted authoritarianism when others didn't because of something intrinsic in our character but because we were more successful than 99% of other countries. That's not the case now obviously.
