You’re exaggerating a bit (although I agree with other points). My father, who worked in a local factory, bought his house in the 70s. He needed to take in lodgers to help with the mortgage, but it wasn’t unknown for working people in that time to buy their home, that’s why building societies were around. Agree that generally the council does well by its tenants, when my parents split we lived in a couple of council (small) estates. The larger estates had a fearsome reputation though.

Will believe it when I see it. But it could mean a lot of jobs in the leisure, luxury and experience sector where the well-off will spend their gains.

To an extent I'd agree. But there does seem to be a section of the population who seem to have looked at Northern Ireland in the 70s and decided let's turn England into that, whether it be flag waving hooligan meet-ups, or choosing to blame all society ills on a minority. They don't just exist on social media, you can bump into them in the local shop or pub or takeaway. So far we are lucky that the vast majority elsewhere contribute in some way, whether it's in the care home, the takeaway shop or the rubbish collectors. But there are dark forces who feel they are getting closer to power. God help us all if they manage to do so.
