Nelson was a bomb scare at Huddersfield but you bet if our CBs are going to have horrible performances I’d rather watch Nelson make a few poor plays then watch whatever the hell that was from Vestergaard today. You can learn about positional play on and off the ball, but you can’t teach a lumbering veteran how to run faster. Commentator on my coverage actually said Vestergaard was “moving through treacle” and that at least gave me a chuckle. It’s early, and plenty teams have gone through much worse starts and pulled themselves back up toward the top of the table in this division. But if this season is going to be a slog, then I would much rather this be a proper rebuild than having to watch the usual suspects and their lack of heart play through 44 more games. Hell, I’m not even sure how much more I’d like watching a lot of these players even if the team were grabbing a good haul of points!

There will be a few GMs in late September ruing not making one last proposal to the Twins for Ryan. These last few days have been completely ridiculous on and off the field across the league. A wild deadline day (including perhaps the most in-demand closer getting caught up in a spot-fixing investigation, sorry @KingsX ), several walk-offs, and several absurd comebacks/meltdowns (no comment 😶) . On top of it all there will be perhaps 90,000 fans watching a baseball game played at a race track tonight on the same day that two games will be taking place at minor league parks. As much as I miss the way things used to be and have more than a few gripes with Rob Manfred, it feels like there is more drama and entertainment around the league at this point of the calendar now than there really ever used to be. The expanded playoffs, more logical trade deadline dates, end of post-deadline waiver trades, and reduction of September expanded rosters from 40 to 28 all contribute to this.

Nigel did a couple of interviews in April when he said he was recovering from both back injuries and a “neurological” issue but I don’t think he got into specifics. Either way, glad he has been doing well all things considered and definitely hoping whatever prognosis he gets will be encouraging!

That top of the 5th is going to give me nightmares for a very long time (even though the Yanks still faced an uphill path through LA even if they were to hold on). but yeah @NJFox Freeman is an all-around gentleman. Putting aside my Yankee fandom for a second, it’s nice for him that he was able to finish his season with such an impressive World Series performance and have something so big to celebrate after that harrowing ordeal with his son a few months ago.

Some sports like cricket/rugby will take time but I remember people saying the MLS would never take off... I’m not into cricket so some of this post might be wrong. Anyway, cricket will never compete with the “big four” leagues and many other sports, but that’s ok. It really only has to grab a niche here and it will be fine enough. The original poster may have had a point about some of the venues at the last cricket World Cup because we really don’t have many proper cricket grounds or even really stadiums at all here. But the games out on Long Island really seemed like they got the turnout and attention the organizers were hoping for. Of course having India and Pakistan helped with that regard, but that was definitely the point. Cricket might not get mainstream media coverage here but those games were massive around the South Asian community (of which we’ve got a big one in the NY Metro area, unsurprisingly). I saw some of the India vs USA game on TV and I loved not just how it passionate and good natured the crowd was, but also how proud and happy many people wearing India blue were to see both of their countries playing cricket. The USA team had a lot of expats and did themselves proud, and you’d think the hope is that some younger folks from primarily our South Asian and West Indian communities got some inspiration for that to keep playing cricket and dream of also playing at the World Cup. If so, there are a few wealthy folks that are trying to lay down some money in enough cricket infrastructure to try to get Major League Cricket firmly established, have a decent enough national team pipeline, and get the amount of foothold in their section of the American sports world they need to get some return on investment.

For the first month of the season, I was a little irritated by Cooper’s team selection and in-game decisions because I thought he was a lot more clever than what he was showing in a bid to play it safe. After Everton home, I’m now just irritated by Cooper.
