It’s not really true. There was still debts then including the £17m related to the still fairly new shiny stadium. The club’s wage to turnover percentage was worse at the time of the L1 relegation (103 per cent). People didn’t care/notice as much because there was no talk of PSR and actually being in administration and close to the wall just five years earlier. By comparison, five years ago this season, we were winning the FA Cup and chasing the Champions League. That’s precisely why it probably feels worse. We’d had a few ever increasingly poor seasons in the Champ than we were used to as well in 07/08. There was also more of an acceptance then that players were limited but tried harder, partly because of the huge wages many are currently on.
