Haydos Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 I'm shit. It's much more fun than badminton though. Tell me how to be a better Squasher.
bovril Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 I used to play a lot. I wasn't great, I was told that if you're good you should never be running around the court. I was too much of a chicken to play it in the end, didn't like the idea of being walloped by a racket or ball. I was a great badminton player as a teenager though, county honours and all that shit.
RonnieTodger Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 It's weird you say that, I started a few weeks ago and like you, find it more fun than a lot of sports. I started off shit, but picked it up quickly. What Bovril says is true - try to keep in a position that means you're never too far from the ball. Sounds obvious, but if you can get the cross on the T, you're generally better positioned than your opponent.
Ross-Kemp Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 It's a fun game, every time I play I ache in places I didn't know I had. Precision not power works for me, soft subtle shots will make your opponent have to move a bit more.
tom27111 Posted 26 April 2015 Posted 26 April 2015 Isn't it generally played by men in their 40's and a major cause of heart attacks?
Haydos Posted 26 April 2015 Author Posted 26 April 2015 I seem to be doing some stuff right according to tips and videos. Not been hitting my drives high enough it seems so I've been having trouble getting it to the back corners. Also need to focus on footwork and returning to the middle. I can't remember the last time I played a sport for the first time so this is a little odd. Feels weird not having any muscle memory or instinct, can sometimes feel the cogs in my brain turning. Hopefully this stuff will get better with experience. Oh and I'm dreadfully unfit at the moment which isn't helping.
oxford blue Posted 27 April 2015 Posted 27 April 2015 The British Open will be on BT Sport (11- 17 May). I enjoy watching top class squash; only trouble is it's made to look so easy.
Voll Blau Posted 27 April 2015 Posted 27 April 2015 Played a bit as a teenager. Control the T, that's the key.

It's a bit demoralising watching professionals on youtube. I'll try and keep an eye out for the Open then, I'm sure I'll be as good as them by then.
VinceNoir Posted 27 April 2015 Posted 27 April 2015 I love playing squash. Played for five years now, but just with mates and that. No proper coaching or anything, so I probably can't give you any good tips. I played badminton a lot as a kid, but when I started playing squash I instantly found out that I enjoy it much more than badminton. How long have you been playing, Haydos?

A few weeks now, me and my housemates popped up to the uni courts to give it a try and we've all bought rackets since. Going to keep watching videos and reading a bit about it, there's a lot more to it than there looks it seems.

There is a lot to it. I tend to play a lot differently than you're supposed to apparently. I prefer standing at the back rather than the middle. I reckon it gives me much more awareness. Obviously means I can't get to all of the drop shots, but it requires a certain technique to place them brilliantly anyway.
Lovejoy Posted 25 May 2017 Posted 25 May 2017 New hobby. Advice welcome. Also, where's best to purchase my own racquet? Borrowing a mate's atm.

Learn to serve perfectly so the ball drops in the corner of your opponents court without bouncing. This way you'll not have to do any of the running about which is an awful business.
notnow john Posted 26 May 2017 Posted 26 May 2017 Footwork is vital, it's mostly a side on game so forehand strike the ball with your weight on the left foot (right handlers) and right foot for your backhand. Play the ball down the line (wall) keeping the ball As close to the wall as possible. its a great game let us know about your progress.
