Guest Posted 3 September 2015 Posted 3 September 2015 I was in England in the 70s too, inflation, industrial strife, rising unemployment and the govt going cap in hand to the IMF for a loan. I doubt many of the excessively rich did cry much, just move somewhere else. I can only say what I saw here, maybe you've read up on it. Depardieu went to Russia though.

I seem to remember some billionaire industrialist moving to Belgium. Isn't London supposed to be the fifth largest French city now as well, there are that many moving here.

Buce Posted 3 September 2015 Posted 3 September 2015 What would these people do if they lived in a country where no welfare state existed? Utterly irrelevant; they don't.
Guest Posted 3 September 2015 Posted 3 September 2015 Why are they moving here though? Adventure. They work mostly restaurant type jobs and have a laugh in one of the world's greatest and safest metropole. The same reason other young people from Leicester try to get jobs in London.

No average British person can afford to buy a house in London anymore despite working some of the longest hours in Europe. The French work far fewer hours and have higher productivity. If there's plenty of evidence that the French economic system forces the rich away there's also plenty of evidence that is does a lot more for ordinary people than ours does.

But France has a far better standard of living than us according to you, why aren't all our young people getting jobs there?

Frank to be Posted 3 September 2015 Posted 3 September 2015 British wages aren't down. French unemployment figure 10.3% UK 5.6% British wages are at about the same level as they were in 2007, nearly a decade ago. French wages are up by about 6% in the same time. Would you give up your pay rises forever to maintain a marginally lower (which itself is deeply questionable) unemployment rate?
Guest Posted 3 September 2015 Posted 3 September 2015 But France has a far better standard of living than us according to you, why aren't all our young people getting jobs there? Why are you putting words into my mouth? I haven't said anything about standard of living and a comparison. Are you aware how many English do live over here? Most English can't get jobs here because they are too lazy to learn a second language. they'd have to go to Scotland or some other English speaking country. How's your French? If you could speak good French you could earn more over here than in England as could British Plumbers and electricians but surprisingly they don't speak French. The young French make the effort to learn English and therefore can work in England and elsewhere in the restauration and hotellerie industry. The pay isn't good though is it?

It's almost half.Having higher average wages only helps if you have a job. Year on year UK economic growth 2.6%, France 1%.We also have a higher GDP. To try and pretend that France's economy is doing better than ours is obviously not true.

Webbo Posted 3 September 2015 Posted 3 September 2015 Average monthly wages according to wiki. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_countries_by_average_wage United-Kingdom 2 810,26 € France 2 223,89 € For an intelligent man you speak some absolute crap when it comes to politics. Of what benefit is gdp growth when ordinary people don't feel any of it? The British economy is better than France on unemployment, possibly. We don't know for sure because in Britain we count people on zero hours contracts as employed, we count people who don't have jobs but are on training programmes as employed, and we count people who are self employed but earning no real money as employed. What we do know is that the French work less and their wages are going up higher than ours. Frankly I don't give a monkeys about some manipulated gdp or unemployment figure, what people feel in their pockets is much more important.

You wouldn't because when it comes to politics you are blinkered. I've argued with what you've said about young French people because I live with them and work with them and talk with them and you don't. I advise them to go to England and work to broaden their horizons and increase their experience and perfect their English and sample cultural differencies. I can assure you that the amount they earn in London minus the bed and board they pay does NOT give them more money than they can get working the same jobs over here. And I don't know why you're showing me the "average monthly wages" when they have nothing to do with the amount these kids earn in England and what they could earn in France. Still you won't listen so as usual I'll leave our disagreement there.

You don't know every French migrant so you can't say that's the only reason. I'm sure there are young, educated French who have left their homeland because they're tired of the constant strikes, stagnating economy and politics of envy there is there, just as we had loads of people leaving here in for the same reasons in the 70s.

Webbo Posted 3 September 2015 Posted 3 September 2015 I give up. You've got to give me a better answer than I know people. I can't just say "I live in England so I know better" and expect to go unchallenged.

I am telling you what I know about the French not about England. Yet you are talking about the French and France where you know sweet FA. I've lived and worked here for 20 years. I could quote you French newspapers if you can read French and I'm sure I can find many articles the equivalent of your Daily Mail articles if I could be bothered. But I can't, I've never seen you change your mind on a political stance in all the years I've read you.

You don't speak for France anymore than I speak for the UK.
The Railway Man Posted 3 September 2015 Posted 3 September 2015 Anyone watching this hustings on Sky? I wouldn't want any of these four in charge of a tuck shop let alone a country, they are all bonkers from "Really a Tory" Liz to "Politics of Dope" Jeremy.
