davieG Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Leicester City captain Wes Morgan can't wait to take on Lionel Messi and Co when on Jamaica duty By Leicester Mercury | Posted: May 26, 2015 By James Sharpe and Rob Tanner Wes Morgan in action against QPR Comments (0)Wes Morgan said he is relishing the once-in-a-lifetime chance to face Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez despite concerns over his "punishing" summer international schedule. Leicester City captain Morgan has been called up to the provisional Jamaica squad for the Copa America in Chile, to be played between June 11 and July 4. The Reggae Boyz, who are playing in the tournament on invitation as they are not a member of Conmebol, the South American football federation, face a daunting group which includes World Cup finalists Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay. The Copa America is followed immediately by the Concacaf Gold Cup, which is played between July 7 and July 26 in Canada and the USA. That would mean Morgan could miss a large proportion of City's pre-season schedule, but more importantly he will get little chance to recharge his batteries after a gruelling Premier League season. "I've not got much of a rest," said Morgan. "It's a busy June and July. "But it's something I'm looking forward to. It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing, to play against that quality of player. "It depends on what stage we drop out the competition, but I'll try to squeeze some rest in between. "There are beaches and the weather is not bad, so I'll be dipping my toes in the water at some point definitely." Morgan made his 40th start of the season in Sunday's 5-1 victory over QPR at the King Power Stadium, but there will not be much time afterwards for him to relax before potentially linking up with his Jamaica team-mates. City boss Nigel Pearson has always encouraged his players to play at international level and said he would never stand in a player's way, but he admits his concern over Morgan's schedule. "He is not going to get a break," said Pearson. "I am concerned about that. "I am concerned that a player who has been more or less ever-present for us has a very hectic international programme. "But this is not the forum for getting involved into a club-versus-country argument. We are aware of the schedule, with the two tournaments back-to-back, three days apart from the end of the first to the start of the second. "It goes without saying it is a pretty punishing schedule." Several of Pearson's squad will also be in international action this summer as the European Championship qualifiers continue, including Jamie Vardy who has been called in to the England squad for the qualifier in Slovenia on June 14. Liam Moore is in the England Under-21s squad for the European Championship finals in the Czech Republic. lgfualol Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 I hope Jamaica play a back 3 for Morgan's sake. Kramaric has also been chosen for thr Croatia squad.
Xen Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 He's going to Chile for a competition which, realistically, will only last 3 games for him. Not as much rest as LCFC would probably like for him, and he'll miss most of preseason, but it's not going to be quite as hectic as made out...
LCCFox96 Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Even at 31, the Copa America will be good experience for him which hopefully helps him adapt better to the premier league than he did this year. Like Xen says it will likely only last 3 games anyway so what he loses in rest he'll make up for in experience.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Wouldn't be entirely averse to him picking up a Schlupp like 'knock'. Been a long and hard season, and next year likely won't be any easier, at the wrong side of 30 he could probably do with a good rest.
Jordan Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 has Ulloa made the Chile squad? If you mean the Argentina squad for Chile 2015, then no.Messi, Aguero, Tevez, Gaitan, Lavezzi, and Higuain are Argentina's forwards on their preliminary roster, which shows just what kind of competition Ulloa is dealing with. Even after a decent Premier League campaign, an Argentina cap looks like a bridge too far.

I'm pretty sure he meant the Chilean national team as he said earlier in the season that he qualifies to play for them

Wow, my bad--I had no idea that he was able to switch his registration let alone even qualify! In either case, no, I remember going through the Chile squad last night and I would have definitely noticed if Ulloa was in. There is a special Copa America next summer so perhaps Leo can make it for that.

Tim Vickery, the expert on South American football, did say earlier in the season that he was on the national teams radar though.

It's lucky that Ulloa qualifies for Chile to at least still have some hope of playing internationally--he'd have a better chance trying to use his Spanish passport to try to get into Spain's squad than ever getting in that Argentina team

There is a special Copa America next summer so perhaps Leo can make it for that. This is the 'special' edition of the tournament, to celebrate the 100th anniversary. Next year it will be back to the regular cycle. Interestingly enough, I understand all games will be streamed via You Tube in the UK as no broadcaster has picked up the rights. Not quite the World Cup, or Euro's, but it'll give me my football fix during the summer. Hopefully we've got a couple of scouts out there, can pick up some good value signings from the South American leagues.
fleckneymike Posted 26 May 2015 Posted 26 May 2015 Wes knows how to conserve energy, if it gets too much he'll just sit on his arse for half the game
