Izzy Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 I know it's not LCFC related, but it's exactly 25 years since we should have won the World Cup. Can't believe it's that long ago and it seems like only yesterday I was watching it in the bars of Magaluf. I think that England team would batter the current crop. World in Motion, Gazzas tears, Platts volley, Linekers penalties etc. Just wondered what your overriding memories are..
the zorro Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 Without doubt my favourite World Cup. I was 10 at the time. With regards to England, the Belgium and Cameroon games stick in my mind the most. Didn't Belgium have a perfectly good goal chalked off for offside? It could've been so different. The hours spent recreating the Platt goal were endless. If you nailed it, it was usually followed by a Roger Milla bum wiggle at an imaginary corner flag. Also remember getting incredibly mardy when we were losing to Cameroon, thinking we'd blown it. Sort of prepared me for England games since! Some great players on show, some great goals, the kits seemed better than they are now, some of the commentary was great (especially "CANIGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. Scores"), those on screen graphics, World in motion, Pavarotti. Everything about it. The last truly great World Cup in my opinion.

Headed to the Haymarket to the grotty sports shop downstairs, torn between the Cameroon shirt or the England shell suit, went for the shell suit. John Barnes was my favourite player by miles and can still recall he was 'level' against Belgium and had a goal chalked off.
Vlad the Fox Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 That England team would have beat anything that followed and the current crop are a long long way short. It was also a period when a lot of the big European teams had very strong squads.
bovril Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 You've got to hold and give but do it at the right time.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 When football is abolished, everyone will look back at this as the pinnacle.
Bayfox Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 1st wc I remember. Was on holiday on iow. Had to put my own 50ps in the metre to be able to watch et and penalties. Best england side in my lifetime. Wright walker gazza platt jug ears Beardsley. Loved it. Really believe that's as close as I will see us come to a wc. The current crop needs more vardys less jones and rooney.
1972 Fox Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 I went out there for the QF vs Cameroon in Naples and then went to the SF vs Germany in Turin. Didn't have tickets when I arrived but easy enough to get hold of when in Italy. Great days and we really should have beaten the Germans and probably would then have gone on to win the final. It just seems like a dream now that I would have been out there watching England in a WC final if it hadn't been for the dreaded penalties. Sadly I think my chance has gone now as England are nowhere near good enough and access to these sort of showpiece events is so much more difficult.
bovril Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 A lot of the games were quite boring. But it was at a time when football was coming out of the doldrums and anything seemed possible in sport and culture after the 80s. And Gascoigne is still the best player to pull on the England shirt.
fleckneymike Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 Chris Waddle was utter class. One of the best English players of the last 25 years
the zorro Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 One of my favourite all time quotes was when Sir Bobby said something along the lines of "I'm not saying we'd have beaten Argentina in the final, but I'd have bet my life on it."

Great days indeed, don't think we'll ever get that close again in my lifetime.
shailen Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 Up until 2006, I loved to watch England. Players like Beckham, Owen, Scholes, Neville, Shearer, Sheringham, Gazza...etc. They thrived to be in an England colours. It was certainly the pinnacle of their career. With the money in the PL, club football is now considered a priority and international football has taken a backseat. Was it Sterling who refused to play because he was too tired? I mean the current crop doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

pSinatra Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 Anyone who hasn't seen it..........watch it We could have won it, but were also lucky to get as far as we did. Belgium. Cameroon. Gazza was immense & as big a train wreck as he is now, I'll always love him for Italia 90
shailen Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 My favourite tournament has to be Euro 96. Italia 90 was the one which really put English football back on the map after 20 years of failure. But Euro 96 was something else. The whole country were behind England, and we actually played some outstanding football and even won a penalty shoot out along the way. Not to mention that three lions song. Absolute epic anthem.

Gazza was immense & as big a train wreck as he is now, I'll always love him for Italia 90 It's a brilliant documentary and I had goose bumps watching it - would recommend to all. We did have some luck yes, but we also had a great team spirit and a Manager they all loved playing for. Gazza had complete freedom to do his stuff and scared the shit out of the opposition. Such a shame he went off the rails...

fleckneymike Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 Not wishing to sound all 'in my day' but Italia 90 (and probably USA 94 too) World Cups were exciting because you'd genuinely never heard of or seen half the players in it. Even the top nations like Brazil, Argentina, Italy, Germany etc had players who you'd genuinely not know. Your 'world stars' Gullit, Canniga, Baggio etc you'd seldom see play aside from the big tournaments, the World Cup really was the pinacle for players, coaches, tactics etc. These days everyone has a YouTube vid or a profile on FM or Fifa so watching it you don't really discover new players. Euro 96 as good but Italia 90 will always be the best for me. The last 20 years has been pretty shit when you think about it... Italia 90 rehabilitated football, Euro 96 gentrified it.
Izzy Posted 8 June 2015 Author Posted 8 June 2015 You've got to hold and give but do it at the right time. . Still remember every word of World in Motion. Best ever England song. They don't do England songs anymore do they? Guess the players today are too 'big and important' for that type of thing these days....
shailen Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 Euro 96 as good but Italia 90 will always be the best for me. The last 20 years has been pretty shit when you think about it... Without a doubt. It has got progressively worse since then. English players look like they don't care like they did 20 years back.

Maybe the money they're on now has much to do with it, I dunno. Can never recall the whole 'club vs country'' thing being an issue back then either.
CosbehFox Posted 8 June 2015 Posted 8 June 2015 Benjamin Massing's tackle happened about 25 years and 4 hours ago! It wins best World Cup for that alone. Fleckney Mike is bang on about the mystery of players and teams.
