Babylon Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Well he didn't pick Drinkwater more did he? Yes he did. In fact by the end of last season King had re-established himself as the preferred partner to Cambiasso and on merit. Oh come on, it's impossible to say that. They both played their part over the run in, but both had injuries. With James' obviously completely ruling him our for the end of the season. There was certainly no clear pattern of King being preferred. He may well have been, but injuries to both of them mean we'll never know. All four of them had so many injuries stop starting partnerships it's very difficult to lay your hat on any partnership.
benpicko Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 There were multiple matches last year in which King was recogniseably our best player, and I've forgotten the match but there was one where he was just everywhere on the pitch, every tackle he attempted he seemed to win and every pass he made seemed to be successful. I remember Cambiasso still won in the vote after the match but that was the best midfield performance of last season for me
ScouseFox Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 How on earth has King suddenly become the "best" or "second best" midfielder at the club?? When did that happen about October 2008
BURBO17K1 Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Anyone remember King's goal at Coventry away 2010/11 I think? Lobbed the keeper from on the byline near enough
Guest ttfn Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Yes he did. Screen Shot 2015-07-16 at 12.35.59.png Oh come on, it's impossible to say that. As I said they played a similar amount. Also I think it was pretty clear that King was first choice by the end - we all know Pearson didn't like to change a winning team and we were winning with King in the starting line-up. No way was he getting dropped any time soon after his performance against Swansea and with the team winning. My personal preference has always been to get King in the team and worth noting that he finished a whisker ahead of James and Drinkwater on the FT average ratings for the season. It's certainly not outrageous that a sizeable proportion of the forum would consider him our best available midfielder
Babylon Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 No way was he getting dropped any time soon after his performance against Swansea and with the team winning. But he did miss the Newcastle game that we won 3-0 and only came on against Saints after James's injury when we were 1-0 up. We should have been 2-0 up against West Ham before he even got on the pitch to score a last minute goal. Credit where it's due he put in some great performances at the end, but we were doing fine without him before he came in and were doing fine when he was injured in those games.
RowlattsFox Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 King was injured for the Newcastle game though, after going off against Chelsea. I'd imagine he'd have kept his place otherwise.
daddylonglegs Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Why's his place even being questioned? For 2 seasons now hes been a dependable squad player, occasionally games passed him by but he regularly looked like the only player in our team comfortable on the ball in the premier league, especially in the first stage of the season. He had a much greater impact IMO than Drinkwater considering how big a part he was in our boom period where he got the ball rolling against west ham. plus he's a legend so anyone questioning him can do one
ScouseFox Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 his performance vs Swansea would've won any game for any team in the history of time
daddylonglegs Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Out of interest, is there anyone who would get rid of him now if we were offered say, a million? Bare in mind we have 2 fit central midfielders.
Haydos Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Out of interest, is there anyone who would get rid of him now if we were offered say, a million? Bare in mind we have 2 fit central midfielders. £1m? wat
RedSoxUK Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Out of interest, is there anyone who would get rid of him now if we were offered say, a million? Bare in mind we have 2 fit central midfielders. Indispensable m8. 49m to start negotiations.
benpicko Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Out of interest, is there anyone who would get rid of him now if we were offered say, a million? Bare in mind we have 2 fit central midfielders. 35m and I'd think about it, and then turn it down
Voll Blau Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 He could do a lap of honour round the pitch waving an ISIS flag and I'd still want him. He's the symbol of our club's resurgence since that dark day at Stoke. Nothing better than a one-club man.
Marie84 Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Out of interest, is there anyone who would get rid of him now if we were offered say, a million? Bare in mind we have 2 fit central midfielders. No chance I'd tell them to stick it..
Bettsj2 Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Out of the 3 (James, Drinkwater, King), King is more likely to flourish under Ranieri.
ScouseFox Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 if both his legs fell off I'd still say fvck off to 1 mill for him
Babylon Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 King was injured for the Newcastle game though, after going off against Chelsea. I'd imagine he'd have kept his place otherwise. I'm well aware of that, I've mentioned his injury and Jame's several times. You don't have to be a genius to work out Pearson favoured James to King without a shadow of a doubt in the last two years though.
TheSomersetFox Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 the amount of times Kingy popped up out of nowhere and robbed the ball in the Swansea game was ridiculous. People who don't rate what he does and has been doing for us for the past god knows how many years are fvcking hilarious.
Thracian Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 King has definitely benefitted from Cambiasso's presence because both are essentially readers of the game and passers of the ball. By that I mean people who can move the ball accurately and constructively in one-or-two touches whether under pressure or not - in other words the kind of players who are essential if we are to continue cope in in the Premiership. More than that, King has shown himself capable of improving and of maintaining the kind of balanced outlook under pressure that Pearson would have done well to have adopted cos it might have saved his job here. King's added a bit of steel and determination to his game. It seemed the effort of it - and a seemingly endless workload - might have cost him his sharp eye for a goal chance but there have been signs of that returning and, if so, his goals potential from central areas represent an important bonus at Premiership level because we need goals from other areas. I shouldn't even need to be arguing the case for King cos too many people have failed to recognise or acknowledge his ability ever since he came into the team. But managers have clearly appreciated him and understandably so given the number of games he's played, the rare success our club has enjoyed during his time as a first teamer and how pitifully he was missed when he stopped being a regular in the team, as adequately emphasised by the turn-around when he returned. King's not just a midfielder but a calm and clever potential goalscorer, a more than capable reinforcement in defensive dead-ball situations, a cool influence whenever we're under physical or psychological pressure, someone who can be relied on to retain possession when we need it and a guy who doesn't get sent-off or suspended when the going gets tough. With Ranieri regarded as a "passing" manager I'd imagine King would be the last player he'd want to be rid of whether he's in the starting line-up or on the bench. Cos, as the squad stands at present, he'd sure be one of the first on my retained list. And, yes, he does love the club. There's nothing contrived about Kingy. He's a managerial Godsend.
Tommeh Posted 16 July 2015 Posted 16 July 2015 Questioning the future of Andy King? Time to close the forum.
