I think Everton would have been regarded as a top 4 club at the time. He won two league championships, FA Cup and Cup Winners Cup.

Yeah i suppose that could be argued.. I'd say top 6 for sure but i chose my words carefully in saying a traditional top 4 club...
Tuna Posted 28 July 2015 Posted 28 July 2015 That picture is tragic, absolutely shocking. Neville Southall looks good though.
ozleicester Posted 29 July 2015 Posted 29 July 2015 I dealt with kids at these kind of schools, full credit to the man, its a very tough job.
Aus Fox Posted 29 July 2015 Posted 29 July 2015 Yeah i suppose that could be argued.. I'd say top 6 for sure but i chose my words carefully in saying a traditional top 4 club... In your eyes who is a traditional top 4 club? Not having a go or anything, genuinely interested who people see as a traditional top 4 club.
Captain... Posted 29 July 2015 Posted 29 July 2015 Everton are traditionally a bigger club than Chelsea and Man City, record number of seasons in the top flight, 9 league titles, only Arsenal, Liverpool and United with more, who would be the other 3 in my traditional top 4. Chelsea and Man City are relatively new to the big boys. Before the premier league they had 3 titles between them.
Jon the Hat Posted 29 July 2015 Posted 29 July 2015 Great to see an ex player doing something worthwhile with his post playing career. Top guy, and who gives shit if he is on the tubby side.
stripeyfox Posted 29 July 2015 Posted 29 July 2015 At the time of Everton's peak success (85 - 87) Southall surely was the best keeper in the league and Everton were probably a top two side based on the previous decade, second only to Liverpool. They were miles ahead of Manchester United; Chelsea and Man City were nowhere. They had a great team - Graeme Sharp, Kevin Ratcliffe, Adrian Heath, Gary Lineker to name but a few. Trying to think of who the others had in goal at the time - Liverpool had Grobelaar, United had Gary Bailey (and possibly someone else who I can't remember), Arsenal had Pat Jennings and Spurs had Ray Clemence. The England goalkeepers were Shilton (Southampton) and Woods (Sheff Weds. If Southall didn't have the disadvantage of being Welsh, he would have been a shoe in for the 1986 World Cup.
Guest Electric Yetis Posted 29 July 2015 Posted 29 July 2015 Remember Steve Thompson smashing in the top corner against him in 91/92 season. Great keeper in his time.
Freesolo Posted 29 July 2015 Posted 29 July 2015 I heard he was a little bit of a odd one, great keeper but in the 80s, I heard a story that when Everton won the F.A cup the whole team went out to celebrate and Southall just went home .
