When I was in my middle/late teens I can remember watching Euro 96, France 98 and all the qualifiers and friendlies inbetween all I wanted was for England to win. In the tournaments it would be nail biting. As the years have gone on I still followed the WC and Euros but started to care less and less and would say I have have come to a point where I don't feel anything for England when i watch them I don't really feel bad if they lose.

The highlight of  tournaments has shifted to watching the other teams like Brazil and Germany etc and world class players playing in great games inInternational football for me as in following my home nation is not the same, don't get me wrong I if England play a good game that great but I don't get that get wrenching feeling when we lose anymore, I don't know if its my age and growing up? The way the media would Hype up England when they where average? Or just the feeling  I get that some players if they had the choice wouldn't even play International football and see it as a part of the sport you have to go through that has made me fell this way

I wondered if other people's Views on the International game have changed over the years?

It's tough for me. I want England to win and succeed more than anyone, but right now under Hodgson I just can't get excited. That will change when I'm in France next summer, I'll be a die hard yob and argue that England are the best side there until I'm blue in the face.

But since Brazil I've not been excited about one England game, I'll watch if they're on but if I have other plans or work then I have put them first.

I just feel we have a group of players with a shit load of potential, I know that's been said for years but I really do see it now. We have Shaw, Stones, Wilshire (kind of), Sterling, Barkley, The Ox and Kane all young lads with bright futures, they're playing under some of the best coaches in the world for their clubs, they're free to get at players, not scared to beat a man and shoot and then that all changes when they come under Hodgson's guidance. Sterling has never looked good in an England shirt, but I have seen him play unreal for Liverpool over a stretch of games and he has come into this England meet up in very good form for Man City, and how did he perform last night? Garbage. He looked disciplined to the left hand side, not coming in and never looked like beating a man.

Now maybe it isn't Hodgson but I'm pretty sure it is, he is killing these young lads and they need a better coach. Now who that is, I don't know but the best will want the England job. Also I'm not going to say get rid of Roy before the Euros as that's clearly not going to happen, but his contract can not be extended after, for the future stars sake.

Also I don't think anything is down to the media hyping us up before a tournament, the British media are the only ones in the world who before a tournament try and find controversy and bad mouth players. Pricks!

once the major tournaments come around everyone is excited. even a high profile friendly gets a lot of people going.

whether it was last week, 15 years ago or 50 years ago nobody would be excited by the thought of us playing San Marino, because it's just not very exciting. still watch it still enjoy us winning still take as many opportunities as possibly to get drunk watching us but let's face it, us vs lithuania is just gonna be boring.

Snap, I was thinking of creating a thread about this.

It is astounding for me the number of people that still watch England, I have no clue why people still watch them other from fruitless patriotism. I have gave up on them about a year or two ago but tuned in last Saturday for Vardy. I will still watch them at tournaments but I enjoy the sense of camaraderie and atmosphere with my friends more than actually watching them. I was bit hopeful after the World Cup at some youngsters such as Sterling,Sturridge,Ox and Barkley who I thought would kick on further. I thought Sturridge and Sterling was good against Italy but the matches since have proven me wrong. Sturridge and Wilshire are injuried all time, Sterling has only rediscovered his mojo, Barkley and Ox has not develop as expected etc.

Roy must go after Euros if it is another drab failure. We desperately need fresh ideas and someone with balls to drop Rooney top scorer or not.

Rooney's top scorer accolade is false, Bobby Charlton never played friendlies against shit teams, Just look at Jimmy Greaves record and its obvious he is the best striker to ever play for England

All i was trying to say that he isn't England's best striker Jimmy Greaves is IMO, yes I admit i am wrong in saying he is not the top scorer but looking at ratios Greaves blows him off the park

i get your point. Charlton never got to bag 5 goals against san marino for starters.

Jimmy Greaves record will blow the majority of the best ever footballers goal scoring record off the park.

It's an irrelevant point, Rooney is England's top scorer and I doubt it will be beaten in a very long time. He'll have scored 65+ easily by the time he has retired from England.

This thread was a good thread, a good topic and looked liked people were going to speak logically. Please let's not slate Rooney or discredit his achievement.

I always get a bit disheartened when it's the international break.

I see it as a bit on an unwanted distraction for me from football. However I do tend to watch the football league games they show on TV, fair play to sky for showing some.

Not keen on the show on Channel 5 for lower leagues.

Presenters etc seem to make a few mistakes.

But Charlton did score 9 of his goals against three of shittest nations at the time in 8-0, 8-0 and 8-1 wins. So if you're going to start blasting out shit facts you read in the Mirror or Mail today then have a look back into Sir Bobby's previous record and his goals before making yourself look daft.

he scored hat tricks in friendly wins vs usa (8-0 win), mexico (8-0 win) & switzerland (8-1 win). can we all stop pretending that bobby charlton scored 49 winning goals in world cup finals. he scored about 75% of his goals in friendlies. he scored 5 championship goals in 16 games. rooney has scored 6 in 17. if it wasn't for a dodgy russian linesman then i assume everyone would say charlton's record is shit, too?

Them teams still were not as bad as san marino.

You watched all them games in depth did you?

Absolutely clueless. Next time England play a shower of shit I'll tweet Rooney and say "don't score against these Wayne, it's embarrassing if goals against these go on your record".

Seriously stop making yourself look silly here, I'll make you look daft and Scouse certainly will.

Come on Grandad, stop contributing to this pointless debate :P

Anyway, the next international weekend I am definitely making sure that I have plans for that weekend to distract me. Last weekend was a pure torture.

Whilst I'm not Rooney's biggest fan and actually would make a case for him to be dropped there is this myth going round that Charlton, Lineker and Greaves only got their goals in big games and Rooney's figures are therefore skewed.

If you look more closely into Charlton, Lineker or Greaves' scoring records you realise they scored a fair share of goals against Minnows of their day. Charlton got three in a 8-0 friendly win over Mexico, three in a 8-1 friendly win over the USA, played in a 10-1 win against the USA,  Five goals against luxembourg that England won by an aggregate score of 14-1. Greaves is pretty similar. Lineker has a remarkable WC record whereas Rooney's is shite but Gary also got a lot of in friendlies, and there's a four goals against Malaysia, and two hat-tricks against a poor Turkey.

That is the thing with International football, you play the best in the world but you also play some utter shite. You can only score against who's put in front of you.

For me Rooney is behind the three players I've listed above but his achievement shouldn't be put down

Charlton was a midfielder so his scoring record is obviously good, but he did play in about 15 Home International Series, equating to 30 / 40 odd matches against local opposition who, it must be said, were generally poor teams.

I know as I watched a lot of these matches.

As a kid I grew up watching Waddle, Hoddle, Butcher, Pearce, Gazza, Lineker and Beardsley. I went to watch England in 2004 in Portugal and Germany 2006. Today's England does not excite me haven't watched them since the last world cup, Just not excited about any of them anymore. My passion for LCFC is the same as it was when I was 12 years old.

Can sympathise a lot with Grandad, that's pretty much exactly how I felt under Toshack. I almost completely fell out of love with international football over how hopeless we were to watch.

Who would people want to replace Hodgson? Me and my manager were discussing this for about 2 hours today and still couldn't really make a cast iron decision. I'm very much in the Hodgson is a dinosaur get him out now camp though.

Depends if you're happy for a foreign manager to come in again mate?

Yea just see if the club record is similar, Greaves has the best goals to games ratio in both club and country I think so you can't really argue with those stats
