Depends if you're happy for a foreign manager to come in again mate?

Not remotely bothered about a foreigner being in charge. If we win something or at least make a real dent in a tournament he can be from Mars for all I care.

Jurgen Klopp (to get more energy and flair back into the team).

Or

Mourinho (he said in the past he'd interested in taking over).

I think the excitement of England has never been absolutely 'there' especially in the last 10 years. We've breezed almost every qualifying (bar 2008 of course) and the quality has faded. In the 1990's there was Euro 96, an agonisingly close qualification battle with Italy, France 98, the play-off with Scotland, Euro 2000 and the early morning novelty of Korea/Japan.

Obviously everyone here is club before country and I'm no different, but it's hard to get it back when people lose interest, especially when you haven't got anything to lure them back with. Qualifying and friendlies aren't interesting anymore. 15 years ago you might call someone who only watched England in the major tournaments a right part-timer but as it stands that's the only time England are remotely interesting.

It's no surprise to me, that the enthusiasm for England has diminished not only because the 1996-2006 ability of player disappeared, but the last three tournaments we have taken part in were in South Africa, Poland/Ukraine and Brazil. You really couldn't ask for those tournaments to be as geographically as far away as they were.

Next year I hope will rekindle my memories of 2004 and 2006. We had hope and the chance to win, but I genuinely believe, in terms of interest in England at major tournaments, it's greater when we're closer to home in Europe. There weren't many greater sights when I was a teenager than seeing 75% of the ground England fans in Portugal and Germany. More people go out, more effort is made by the media and the hype is much greater.

Next year will be fantastic. NI, Wales and England all across the channel. I think the spark of the home nations will help interest grow and the fact the tournament is so close.

That might be a crackpot theory, and just coincidentally tied to us turning into guff  lol

I'll say it again though, qualifying and friendlies are turgid affairs and while Hodgson is the ultimate steady Eddie he has to go after Euro 2016, whether we crash out in the groups or fluke the bloody thing. We need an injection of something into the England national team. Stale would be understating what it's like at the moment.

It's not just under Hodgson though. For me we've been absolutely drab for years and I feel it runs deeper than just the manager. I feel the entire culture around the England set up is absolutely abysmal and that's why I just cannot bring myself to get excited for England games.

I love an international tournament but I've since learned that it's actually got nothing to do with England. When England played in Brazil I honestly wasn't that much more bothered than I was when other sides played. I was disappointed when we went out but no more than I was at any Leicester loss last season. I just feel completely detached from the whole thing.

I wish I didn't feel this way about it all but I just do. I want something to really get me into it, whether it's some encouraging tournament performances or going to more games, who knows. I said I'd go to more games but I've never got round to it because I'd rather spend money on a club where I feel more a part of it. We're a conservative, unambitious side who's FA are more bothered about sponsors than a successful side - it reflects in every part of England FC and for that reason I just don't feel bothered by it, although the more I watch international football the more I think we're not on our own. I think the standard of it is as low as I can remember it. It's like the Premier League in the sense that the majority of the top sides are below par right now.

I'll follow it all but I can't pretend I'm passionate about it.

Whilst I'm not Rooney's biggest fan and actually would make a case for him to be dropped there is this myth going round that Charlton, Lineker and Greaves only got their goals in big games and Rooney's figures are therefore skewed.

If you look more closely into Charlton, Lineker or Greaves' scoring records you realise they scored a fair share of goals against Minnows of their day. Charlton got three in a 8-0 friendly win over Mexico, three in a 8-1 friendly win over the USA, played in a 10-1 win against the USA,  Five goals against luxembourg that England won by an aggregate score of 14-1. Greaves is pretty similar. Lineker has a remarkable WC record whereas Rooney's is shite but Gary also got a lot of in friendlies, and there's a four goals against Malaysia, and two hat-tricks against a poor Turkey.

That is the thing with International football, you play the best in the world but you also play some utter shite. You can only score against who's put in front of you.

For me Rooney is behind the three players I've listed above but his achievement shouldn't be put down

A lot of Rooney's have come against the dross but it does seem like less of his have come on the big stage than the others.

It's not just goals for me though, Rooney's all round game hasn't been on point in an England shirt for god knows how long.

England desperately need to stop recruiting these over the hill dinosaurs to be the gaffer. Hodgson, Redknapp, that must have been ****ing uninspiring.

International managers don't need to buy players, selection is fairly straightforward, more than anything they need to inspire the players to give it absolutely everything.

Give it to a fairly recently retired England international, someone who knows the camp and the scene and the players will relate to as one of their own. A Gary Neville or someone.

Wales revival started under Speedo because the players loved him and grew up loving him.

Posted

give it to someone players grew up loving and your best suggestion is gary neville. you do know who gary neville is don't you finny?

I honestly feel that some players wouldn't want the hassle of playing for England if they didn't know how hard the media would rip into them and how bad it would make them look

he scored hat tricks in friendly wins vs usa (8-0 win), mexico (8-0 win) & switzerland (8-1 win). can we all stop pretending that bobby charlton scored 49 winning goals in world cup finals. he scored about 75% of his goals in friendlies. he scored 5 championship goals in 16 games. rooney has scored 6 in 17. if it wasn't for a dodgy russian linesman then i assume everyone would say charlton's record is shit, too?

haha nice i think we read the same article :D

Uhm. Which of Charlton's tournament goals were down to a dodgy Russian linesman?

I mean. A dodgy Russian linesman is massively famous in English football for awarding Geoff Hurst's second goal to make it 3-2 in the Final... but it is probably even more dodgy if he also award a suspicious goal or two for Bobby Charlton in the 2-1 semi final win over Portugal! ;)

yeah that was the point. winning world cups has nothing to do with how many goals either has scored. people are continually saying "rooney is our record scorer but he's never won a world cup so isn't all that". so i was asking if that linesman hadn't given a goal to us to win the world cup, would people say the same about charlton? or would they still look back (often to before they were even born) and state he was some kind of god whilst rooney is a run of the mill championship player?

I support Leicester because I'm from Leicester, it doesn't matter to me how successful they are, I'll still support them. The same goes for England. If I gave up supporting England because they never win anything I may as well start supporting Chelsea.

Even when we get to tournaments I don't really care. In fact on occasions I actively want England to lose, like when they continue to pick duds and play in a negative way. I only want us to win if we deserve it. I dislike quite a few of our players and have done for nearly 10 years. And I hate managers like Hodgson who have no balls to play the right way.

When I was younger I didn't get to many City games so maybe I wasn't quite as emotionally involved with them, and at that time I thought England winning the world cup was the most important thing in the world, more than Leicester winning anything (this was the attitude I was brought up with as well). Now I'm disgusted at the thought of Leicester fans cheering for Harry Kane when he disrespected our club. Leicester is a week in week out thing, internationals are never going to compare when they're full of players whom I hate most of the season. I just can't get my head around it now.

I'm far more interested in seeing the likes of Mahrez, King, Inler and Okazaki do well for their international sides. I'm half Italian and in all honesty I want them to do well more than England.

As for international football in general, I still get excited about major tournaments but not because of England. Just because it's a massive thing. I remember Euro 2008 didn't have England and it was one of the best tournaments I've seen. The last couple of world cups have been a bit shit tbf, the matches in the knockout stages were generally dreadful and there weren't many memorable moments compared to previous ones. I think you can blame managers like Mourinho for that, the modern kind who encourage negativity and stopping the other team playing. Players like Messi are now stifled out of games and it's not great to watch. Even Brazil no longer play the samba football they were once famous for.

I appreciate that the conversation is primarily Engerland orientated for this thread but I'll add my Irish tuppence.

We used to have a plucky youngish team about 10 or so years ago. We did **** all with it, and now we're struggling to draw a team of mediocre Championship players with a couple of reasonable Prem players together.

I just hope that MON is putting together the groundwork for the future, as I barely see us making the playoffs for France, and I can't see where the youth is coming through, unless we can convince those with 'Irish heritage' to make their way to the greenside to supplement the shortage coming through.

However saying all that, I'll watch the games, and get to those I can afford to when able to. But should we make it to France (my other half French) I don't think it would be worth the expense and hassle to see us get the wooden spoon of whatever group we might get drawn in. MON can make an average team better, but we simply have no depth of quality, and are now the 'new old Wales'.

I really don't care for international football. I can't sit in the kop one week and giving jib to harry kane or Tim Cahill and then the following week cheer them on.

The onset for this I'll feeling was john terry and Ashley cole.

Posted

Fair enough, I do not really want to cheer on John Terry but surely people can cheer on the collective not the individual?

That's where my arguement falls, some fans can bring themselfs to do this. Some lower league fans wouldn't have a problem doing it as they won't face the likes of kane eat week in week out.

I really do struggle to see how liverpool fans can cheer when Rooney scored his pen last night or united fans cheer when hart makes a cracking save (when he actuall my does)

Engalnd fans, as in the fans that actually go away are mostly lower league.

I would love to support england but I don't think you can if you a premier league fan.

That's one of the strangest things I've ever read.

There's a difference between rooney scoring against your club than rooney scoring for your national side.

So Rooney scores three past us at the weekend and we hurl him abuse. The following weekend we cheer him when he wears an england shirt and scores three past Germany say. Sorry I just can't, it doesn't sit right with me.

I wouldn't never "want" england to lose but I would never cheer players that don't play for LCFC.

Being from Northern Ireland, I'm good with international football. Obviously at the minute we are within touching distance of France but its always been this way for me.

I still remember when we went 28 months without a goal and we scored at home to Norway as a consolation to make it 1-3, we when ballistic and went home happier than the Norway fans, who won 4-1 in the end.

Sometimes being really awful make the good times even better!
