Rincewind Posted 7 June 2016 Posted 7 June 2016 Had my voting form last week. Just need to decide the lesser of two evils. Like my sister said it is better to bypass what politicians are saying and go with the facts.

Sol thewall Bamba Posted 8 June 2016 Posted 8 June 2016 People kicking off that the website crashed and they couldn't register. Sorry, no sympathy from me. How long did people have to register and they wait until the last hour? Deadline shouldn't be extended imo.

But one mistake that has clearly been made is to change the registration criteria, kicking people off the register and putting millions of people into doubt as to their position - and yet not include any easy way on the website to check if you were registered.

Absolutely, this has been known for months on end now, If these people really cared about democracy, politics and their right to a vote they wouldn't have been scrambling online close to midnight on deadline day.

But one mistake that has clearly been made is to change the registration criteria, kicking people off the register and putting millions of people into doubt as to their position - and yet not include any easy way on the website to check if you were registered. But if people were that bothered about 'having their democratic voice heard' as people have put it, they wouldn't have left it until the very last minute to register. Edit; sorry, misread your post. I guess so, but at the end of the day you could have just re-registered couldn't you? I'd changed address since the GE so I had to anyway, but it wasn't exactly difficult to do. End of the day it stems from people not listening to what they're being told and acting accordingly. Then Labour and the Lib Dems use what happened to take a cheap shot at Cameron, blaming him for the website crashing is like blaming Jim when LCFC Direct crashes, seems like the right thing to do but probably a bit of a waste of time
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 8 June 2016 Author Posted 8 June 2016 But if people were that bothered about 'having their democratic voice heard' as people have put it, they wouldn't have left it until the very last minute to register. Not sure why you felt the need to reiterate your point - I accepted it, but highlighted a further failing in the overall process.
AKCJ Posted 8 June 2016 Posted 8 June 2016 I've had a poll card through the post a few weeks back with a register number on it. Do I just take this to my polling station on June 23rd? You don't need to take it with you, it should say on the card (It does where I live).

How long did people have to register and they wait until the last hour? Deadline shouldn't be extended imo. It should be extended. True, people have had ages. But they set a deadline and people weren't able to make it. Should just be open for another day. It doesn't hurt anyone bar the elections offices at the local councils.
Footballwipe Posted 8 June 2016 Posted 8 June 2016 This has been the issue with voter registration. The inconsistent message. Not only is it absolutely right that there's no way of checking whether you're on the list than calling your local council, but the systems for registering and the local council are not synced, not matched. This means that if you're on the roll already and registered they won't just get a duplicate message, they have to actually input the person and see if they're on there, causing a headache and big workload for the elections staff. I bet of the whatever hundreds of thousands who registered last night, a majority are already on the electoral roll and didn't need to register.
Stadt Posted 8 June 2016 Posted 8 June 2016 We had poll cards come through for the police commissioner election so I'm assuming we're all registered?
Alf Bentley Posted 8 June 2016 Posted 8 June 2016 We had poll cards come through for the police commissioner election so I'm assuming we're all registered? You should be. The register is only compiled annually - late in the year, usually, and certainly not between 2 elections just a month apart. Our polling cards for the referendum (in Leicester) arrived a couple of weeks back, but maybe delivery is staggered? Anyway, technically you don't need your polling card to vote. Provided your name and address are in the register, they should allow you to vote on the day, if your polling card has gone astray.
Guest MattP Posted 8 June 2016 Posted 8 June 2016 Mine still hasn't turned up either, bit strange given usually here six weeks before general.
DennisNedry Posted 8 June 2016 Posted 8 June 2016 Our polling cards came a few weeks ago so I'd enquire if I were you Matt.

The other thing to consider is whether this will be the end of the **** ups. If you have people making duplicate registrations, that could cause issues when it comes to compline lists for voting day. ANYWAY - Cameron said in PMQ's suggested anyone who registered to vote today (and qualifies) should get a vote in the EU Referedum, so if you got stuck last night, it's worth having a go today.

I'm definitely registered, I voted in the PCC elections just last month. Could even be the postman just hasn't bothered. I almost hope I'm not on the list when I walk down, I'd have a field day with that and how I've managed to come off it

How else are they going to get a 80% remain vote!
Guest MattP Posted 8 June 2016 Posted 8 June 2016 It's amazing how quickly parliament can manage to extend these usually irreversible deadlines when it's widely considered the majority of those trying to get on it are voting for the thing they want us to do. I wonder if they'd do it in a General Election when most of those younger voters trying to sign up would be considered a hinderance to the Conservative vote?
