The evolution of our team

I'm getting increasingly concerned that 4-4-2 no longer works for us that effectively without Okazaki and Kante.

Slimani and Vardy play more of a traditional 4-4-2 that the 4-4-1-1 we did with Okazaki. Slimani is an obvious upgrade on Okazaki and much more of a goal threat but we don't have enough of the ball to justify playing 4-4-2 with two number nines. If we persist with this I can see us beating a lot of the lesser sides but losing to the better sides.

It's hard not to pick both Vardy and Slimani so maybe we'll evolve into a 4-3-3 side with Vardy playing left side and Slimani through the middle?  Maybe it explains why we're interested in Silva from Sporting who is a creative CM and not what we need in a 4-4-2. Whatever happens we can't continue to play both Slimani and Vardy as No 9's as we don't have enough possession to justify it.

Seems kind of simple to me. 442 at home and against sides we should be beating. Away at places like top 6 clubs we need that extra man in the middle. It will be interesting to see a 5 man midfield with mendy drinky and Amartey against a top side away. That would be hard for anyone to break down.

at the moment I do not think we have enough central midfielders to play 4-3-3 as Mendy and James have their fitness issue's and we always tend to struggle when King starts.

I think a better formation to fit Vardy and Slimani would be a 3-4-1-2 or 5-2-1-2:

Schmeichel

Hernandez - Morgan - Huth

Albrighton - Drinkwater - Amartey - Fuchs

Mahrez

Vardy - Slimani

with Mahrez given a free role to play where he wants.

I'm pretty sure at some point Ranieri will try that. Although that requires Mahrez to put a shift in and I dont see him doing that.

"4-4-2 does't work without Kante and Okazaki."

"Drop Albrighton." (Because that's what 433 would mean)

Maybe 433 would work.

Maybe Amartey and a fit Mendy both deserve to start ahead of Albrighton.

Maybe Vardy needs a rest, or should be pushed wide, or Slim needs a rest, or Musa/Gray deserve a start...

But until we need to change it (to rest a player, there is an injury, or two poor performances in a row), I doubt we will.

I thought we could be in trouble early in the first half as we weren't progressing up the pitch, the defence had a lot of the ball and the gap between midfield and attack was massive, neither were really dropping back either but in the end we won :D I share the same concern though with both playing as out and out strikers.

The midfield has looked good at home in a 442. It's the away games where we've got overrun. Even at Hull. Drinkwater has looked good but he needs helped. We need a 5 ot Okazaki just in front in the away games, especially at the top clubs. Going to Old Trafford with a 442 was criminal.
