Grewks Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 (All my opinion) Tier 1 - The current football leagues. Tier 2 - The return of 'reserve teams'. Tier 3 - Not the 'Development league' but the 'English Development league'. All Premier league clubs should lead by example, due to their stature in the game and wealth from the income abroad, and be forced to enter the 'English Development league', which consists of squads containing only players which are eligible to play for England. The three arguments in the media... 1) "Young players need first team football." Well, if they're good enough, they will either feature for their first team or be loaned out. 2) "I learnt a lot from reserve football, we need to bring it back". Sure, why not? 3) "Young English players need more competitive football". So lets give them that, and measure their performance and ability against players of their own ilk. Second thoughts, the EDL initials might not be great for branding....but I like the idea. All the 'grass roots is failing English football' is starting to grate on me, considering it is the grass roots which is responsible for Vardy and Antonio's rise after being shunted by professional football clubs.
Voll Blau Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 Stopping the obscene hoarding of youngsters with any vague semblance of talent by big clubs until they're in their mid twenties would probably help as much as any restructure. Fully agree with competitive reserve leagues though.

foxy boxing Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 the English Development league would in effect be like an u-21 league for Engilsh under 21's , the massive trouble is big clubs stockpiling young players and those players finding too many barriers to the first team, the football laegue has already said no to premier league b teams between the football league and non league. the answer is a quota on the number of young players a premier league team can have at any one time and an even split of young players around the clubs and divisions
Finnegan Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 As much as I wasn't and an not pro-brexit, I assume we can now put a British born quota on the Prem? It'll be interesting to see the hypocrites in charge refuse to do so due to the risk of upsetting the cash flow but still.

CosbehFox Posted 4 October 2016 Posted 4 October 2016 I personally think we never get a return to reserves leagues what are competitive and get crowds like they did 90s and before that. I remember the days of Filbert Street being sold three quarters out for Manchester United reserves. Alongside the reserve leagues, there were tournaments based around a 'third team' (A team) who would play in locally based competitions - like floodlight leagues what would give (in Manchester's example) Man U A fixtures against Oldham, Altrincham, Macclesfield. These clubs appreciated the fixture because they were playing in smaller divisions back then - the occasional floodlight fixture against a big team would boost attendances. The whole concept of a reserve/development league is currently conflicted between what each club wants. We want young lads to have competitive games, so you pull the restrictions on overage players to ensure they are properly tested. Then you'll have clubs what choose to play 11 overage players which doesn't nothing for player development. Chelsea and Man City now have farm clubs. I'd say in fact the Premier League have tried to do the best they can with the whole 'Premier League 2' concept but there's very little appetite for it all now. Interestingly England U17's pulled the most amazing result against their German counterparts this week - similarly our youth teams this month have been rated 2nd best in Europe by UEFA (Portugal no.1 - their introduction of the big three have B teams cited as the main cause). Are the fruits of the 'PDL' system beginning to work? The real issue currently seems to be that spell when players turn 20 - some players need game time and others are fast-tracked too quick. FIFA abolishing 'youth loans' is a closed window for young players to get game time in competitive, lower leagues.
