Summer signing failures and league position

Recommended Posts

I don't think we could've done a worse job with our summer recruitment this year. Players bought have simply not stepped up. The failure has played a key part in our current predicament. Slimani is the only one who somehow gets a regular game and he currently looks far less capable than our sub striker from last year Ulloa. Zieler is no competition for Schmeichel and can't be trusted as back up. Hernandez looks poor at right back and doesn't challenge Simmo for a place in the team - he isn't trusted at centre back so doesn't play even when our centre backs have struggled. Mendy struggled pre season, got injured and now can't get a game despite the limitations of Kingy at this level. Musa hasn't shown up as either a proper winger or a centre forward, looks to have a suspect 1st touch and might possibly be better suited in a 433 -when we steadfastly play 442 - and so he doesn't get a game or minutes on the pitch (even when Vardy is banned.) Kaputska isn't even deemed capable of getting on the bench and has been a sub at U23 level despite being a stand out player for his country. All in all a very expensive current failure. I know there's a long time to go this season and it's relatively early days in terms of their contracts but I would've reasonably expected at least one of them to improve us whereas at the moment, they appear to have helped do the exact opposite!

We put too much faith in buying from foreign markets. Stringer was on the radio after the game insisting Musa and Slimani were not really ready for PL football. That in itself is astonishing thar we've brought in such players.

We should have looked domestically for signings in the summer, look at some of the signings made by teams who we'd consider bigger than, remember we were premier league champions with champions league to offer:

Given the level of expectation it's only slightly better than Peter Taylor's second summer.

Bids for Keane and the Portuguese midfielder suggest we want more recruits in those areas. However like most things LCFC these days, no plan B,C or D!!!

what portuguese midfielder?

Silva.

Just the type of player this team needs. Good with the ball, composed

Proper quality.

Our recruitment policy smacked of poor planning, bad execution and desperation.

WTF were we doing waiting until the last day of the transfer window to try and get Silva and Slimani. If we had identified we wanted these players why were they not signed sooner? If they couldn't do a deal you go to the second player on the list.

What about Keane? We were in for him, we identified we wanted to strengthen there and didn't get him. So that was it, couldn't get him in so we didn't bother.

Look at some of the players who would have come to us in the summer had we gone in for them. They'd have probably come to us had we finished 12th last season let alone champions with champions league to offer.

Martins Indi, Bony, Defour, Benteke, Bolasie, Ashley Williams, Gueye, Callum Chambers, Jack Wilshere, Chadli, Ayew. All better than what we have at the moment.

Claudio must be extremely upset. He's already said he doesn't do much to sign the players. He obviously gives the ok but trusts the scouting team. They've gone out and got him an expensive load of rubbish. Utter, utter rubbish, expensive rubbish.

It makes me feel sick to think we spent best part of 70 million quid on Musa, Kapustka, Slimani, Zieler and Mendy. Musa is basically Schlupp mark 2. He's not good enough. Slimani looks worse than Ulloa, Mendy and Kapustka have never played and Zieler is a poor goalkeeper. Hernandez who was free, is behind 36 year old Wasilewski in the pecking order. Says it all.

The appointment of Macia after the transfer window shut says it all. I reckon Claudio decided they'd got him a load of rubbish in the summer and wanted to sort it.

As I said in another thread...the real problem here is if we stoop so low as to be relegated. God knows how we'd get rid of some of these players.

We have to see an upturn in their form at some point, surely?

new signings take time to settle, we wont see the best of them until next season

this season was always going to be difficult, never going to live up to last season

we have to suck it up, no time for bed wetting, we need to be behind the manager and players, we owe them that after last season.

I know. I didn't say we were in for him..that particular ship has sailed.

Shame, I'd have loved to have watched him play, rather than the rubbish we are having to suffer at present.

Just a bloke who controls from the centre. And has the fitness to go with it.

It's clear that something stinks at the club....we've never received and kind of real reason as to why Walsh left.......you don't just do that....but out recruitment has really sucked, no one has stepped up.....Mendy still unfair to judge but the rest......it's been an absolute train wreck and we are desperate.....

Plan E...

Play 4-4-2 under every conceivable circumstance!

Totally agree.

Same with this new lad we've got. Isn't he coming from Belgium? The quality is so different. Ok, you may find a Hazard or a Lukaku (or a Kante!!!) but they are/seem very few and far between. I agree we need to look domestically, or even look at stronger leagues - Spain, for instance.

I didn't understand the whole "they are not ready" stuff. When will they be ready? We paid a combined £45mill (Musa and Slimani) for them not to be "ready"??

This summer was a mess. Understatement, I know... But like I've said before we were too loyal to average players. We needed a new centre back, a quality/proven replacement for Kante and I agree we needed a striker but £30mill for Slimani is a joke.

I agree with all of that.
